This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Crofoot, Crofut Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kYQ.2ACIB/170 Message Board Post: While using online databases to search for my ancestors, I am finding our surname spelled many different ways. I have been trying to compile a list of spellings for future reference. Sometimes the name is spelled that way on the original document, but many times it seems to be that the transcriber made a mistake. While compiling my list, I noticed that there seemed to be a pattern. I have been able to identify three variations of the first syllable of the name, and many variations of the ending syllable. Not every combination works, but at least one beginning syllable works with each ending syllable or I did not add it to the list. If you have identified other spellings that I have missed, please let me know. Beginning syllables: Craw, Cro, and Crow. Ending syllables: feet fert fet fett ffert ffet ffett ffit ffitt ffoot ffut ffutt fit fitt foot foott fott furt futt
