I saw George in the 1850 Leroy census living with Thomas and Ruth Case, as you pointed out. Wonder if there is a relationship of some kind to Philena? When I looked at the census data recently I had thought the enumerator had messed up the initials and that George was the "L" Crofut age 6, and that James was the missing one. However I guess if you make the children 2 years younger and use their middle names it comes out ok. You're query made me go back and look. I have had no luck finding any of the family in the 1860 census. George could be in Canandaigua NY. Have you been able to find them? Saw your post. I live in Burlington Twp, PA. Burlington Twp was HUGE a long time ago and was subdivided into, West Burlington Twp, Granville Summit, Burlington Twp. etc. There is a cemetery in West Burlington, Twp with an Andrew Crofut age about 23 buried there. He is the only Crofut buried there. I looked. I have not checked the two cemeteries in Granville Summit. There are many Crofuts buried in the LeRoy, PA cemetery located on PA State Route 414 East of Canton, PA. There are Crofuts in the two Shunk Cemeteries. There are several old private cemeteries in the area. I do believe that the Frederick G. Crofut may be burried in one of the two cemeteries on or just off PA State Route 14 south of Canton, PA (near Spencertown Roade) but before you get to the left (east)turn off for Grover, PA, The area I am talking about is called Spencertown. I have not gone there, yet, to check who is buried there but I do think he and Philena are in one of these two cemeteried. I think a Mr. Bishop who was actively looking for Fredrick several years ago had an old phot of the tombstone and I seem to recall that it was quite tall, more of a family plot marker than an individual marker. Frederick is not in the LeRoy or East Canton Cemetery, Shunk cemeteries, nor in the old ME Church cemetery on US Route 6 just 1 mile west of the little town of Burlington also on US 6. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <CROFOOT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 10:53 AM Subject: Re: [CROFOOT] Frederic G. Carolyn, It appears that on the 1890 census for Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, and Widows, etc., Levi Crofut was enlisted in the Pa. 2nd Regiment Co. B, having enlisted on 27 (?) of 1866, and being discharged on the 1st of Sept. 1866, having served 5 months and 26 days. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Carolyn, Information I have says that Levi Crofut b. 1828 in Bradford Co, PA was buried at Governor's Island, NY. I do not have a source for this, so it will need to be verified. Yes, Sukey Beers is my ancestor. The Crofuts came to Bradford County, PA after 1800. The earliest grave in the Leroy Cemetery for Crofut is 1802. I realize it's been a long time since you posted your message - just hoping you are still at this address. I have one Crofoot from Bradford Co. PA. His name was George Crofoot (10/11/1917 - 6/10/2006) He was married to my Aunt Alberta Keegan (3/19/1920 - 5/14/2005). Both George and Alberta died in Florida. Anything sound familiar? I live in Burlington Township, PA. I will look at the cemeteries when I get back from vacation. I do know that there is an Andrew Crofut buried in the old ME Church cemetery just west of Burlington but in Burlington Township. He was about 23 when he died. I took pictures and sent them along to L. Camper some time ago. There are lots of Crofut graves in the Leroy, PA Cemetery. I took those pictures and sent them along to LC as well some time back. I find that the boundaries of the old town names are changed over the years. What was Burlington Township ( and it take in a huge area) is now divided and called by different names than the period you were asking about. I am looking at a cemetery near Grover, PA off PA Route 14 sounth of Canton. There is an old cemetery there as well as the Spencertown Cemetery about 500 ft. west of Rt 14 just north of the turn off to Grover. I think that is where we will find Fred Crofut. My maiden name is Crofut but I am not native to PA. My Crofuts also came from CT and trace our roots back to the common Crofut who spelled his name as we do. So when I get back from Vacation I will make the effort to go to Spencertown and look for Fred. There are many old cemeteries in this area. Some still on farms!
