The name seemed to sound Native American and I for one thought she was. Contrary to my thoughts others believe she is a desendent from an English family. We just have to keep looking and hope we will someday find the answer, only to present a new question. Thank you,...marie

(b. 1 Mar 1766, Norwalk, CT.) These are the children of Ebenezer and Sarah Saint John Crofoot. I know there were other Crofoots (Crofeet? LOL) around in the area. I have a roster of Captain James Clarke's Company, 16th Regiment which made an expedition around Fairfiled County in 1779. That company lists a Seth Crofoot, Sergeant, and a Joseph Crofoot. Ebenezer Crofoot's father was a Joseph Crofoot, but I have no idea if this is the one named. Dinah had a brother Joseph as we and he would have been ot the right age to have fought in the Revolution. He was the eldest child, and the child-bearing in this family was spread out over 20 years. Joseph was the only male. Good luck with your Lois. I will post again if I run across one who fits. Have you ever heard of a Native American connection with your family? Kathy

My father always said there was Native American in our ancestry but I have not been able to verify that in my research. If you do find the info you mention could you please email me with the info? I would really appreciate it. Thank you, Ken Oakley

This too is the info I came across when I started my research into the Crofut line 4 or 5 years ago. I don't know if I kept the informamtion I came across but will dig and see what I do have. It was a Native Indian/ full blooded woman that married a Crofut and they had a couple of sons. I had found some info at some tribal site that I had been looking at, but don't remember what it was. I will see what I can come up with.
i wish i had specific info, but i've only been able to piece things together from numerous sources, and i'm afraid there are some holes. but, i did find some census info for james crowfoot (his daughter was mary) in pennsylvania with an iroquois lineage. but, not enough information for a "red card" to be issued. regardless, i'm proud of this heritage and i'm currently learning all that i can about traditional native american ceremonies after two generations of ignorance on this subject. best of wishes on your efforts to learn more about this! tani Mckiblin1@aol.com wrote: Your comment about the Crofoot family being part Native Indian is very interesting. Definitely not native American. Here is tthe opening paragraph on my Crofutt ancestors. The surname Crofutt is a variant of Crawford: one who came from Crawford (Crow’s Pass) in Lancashire, a dweller near a river crossing where crows were seen. The Crofutt family tree is one of the four main trunks of my pedigree, ending with my Mother Florence Elizabeth Crofutt who died in 1988. That line has been traced through nine generations to Joseph Crowfoot who was born in England about 1630/35 possibly in or near Lowestoft, or Beccles, Suffolk. As a very young man he found passage to America working as a servant, settling in Springfield MA where he became a Freeman in 1672.

She said that photographs of Amos B. Cole and his son Festus show that they had native American features. Some members of the next generation (will not name names here in a public forum) had coal black eyes. I would not be surprised because the name "Crofoot" is unusual. I have also seen my Dinah referred to as "Crawford."Where does your Charles fit in? Dinah was one of nine children of Ebenezer and Sarah St. John Crofoot. The family was all girls, except for the oldest, Joseph. I am in the process of trying to figure out whom all the girls married. Let me know if you can shed any more light. Kathy

A friend of the family who work with my grandfather Charles said he told him the story, but when he related this to me was up in years and could not remember any detail. He has since passed on. I have tried asking my aunts but they have no information either. My Grandfather was Charles Daniel Crofutt, married to Bess Baxter. I'd be interested in any information anyone has. Carol
