Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kYQ.2ACIB/167.1.3.1 Message Board Post: Can you tell me the time frame of your Crofoots and where they lived? I have been in touch with another poster who shares my line (Dinah Crofoot who married Amos Cole in 1783) and he claims to have seen a very early photograph of direct descendants of these folks, and the Native American influence was very strong in their appearance. I have identified Dinah's father as Ebenezer Crofoot of New York, and his father as Joseph Crofoot who married Lydia Canfield. Dinah's mother was Sarah St. John. None of these other names seem anything but English. It is possible that the original Native American was a male with the Crofoot name that passed on down the generations. Give me a time and place, and I will see if I can find a connection.

We also have lore of Native American Blood. However, my mother said what she heard was that the original spelling 'Crofoot/Crowfoot' was Native American and someone (one of the ancestors) changed the spelling to Crofut/Crofutt. Also, whenever I research anything it leads me back to England...does anyone have any idea how this lore started?

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Crofoot, Crofut Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kYQ.2ACIB/170 Message Board Post: While using online databases to search for my ancestors, I am finding our surname spelled many different ways. I have been trying to compile a list of spellings for future reference. Sometimes the name is spelled that way on the original document, but many times it seems to be that the transcriber made a mistake. While compiling my list, I noticed that there seemed to be a pattern. I have been able to identify three variations of the first syllable of the name, and many variations of the ending syllable. Not every combination works, but at least one beginning syllable works with each ending syllable or I did not add it to the list. If you have identified other spellings that I have missed, please let me know. Beginning syllables: Craw, Cro, and Crow. Ending syllables: feet fert fet fett ffert ffet ffett ffit ffitt ffoot ffut ffutt fit fitt foot foott fott furt futt
