It does not correspond with anything I have, which is very little, but the Hubbard Crofoot is the closest to the name of my ggggrandfather that I have seen yet. I checked through my research notes and did not come up with a Sarah as requested, but I will definately keep you in mind as I research and will let you know of anything I come up with. Thank you for your reply and good luck!

I am researching my Crofoot connections through my gg grandfather William Anson Johnson born in Leyden, LewisCounty, NY. His mother was Sarah Crofoot born I believe in 1821. I cannot find anything on her as to parents, etc. I came across a Talcottville Cemetery transcription in which there are 2 listings. One for an Anson Crofoot and the other for Sarah daughter of Hubbard and Sarah Crofoot. The gs is apparently in too bad shape to read by what is written, so there are no dates for Sarah the daughter. I had hoped this was my Sarah Crofoot, but it doesn't look like it now from what you have written about Hubbard. Would you know any other Sarah Crofoot born in 1821 and where she may be buried. Winnie

There were other Crofoots in southern MI and I have copies of some Bio sketches from Co. books but none from Barry Co. Crofoot has been a brick wall for me further back from David. My ancestor married Harry Monroe in 1835. They had one daughter that I know of, Emerilla E. Monroe, born July 19, 1836. The 1870 and 1880 US Census records both indicate that Harry and Nancy Monroe were living in Newago Co, Michigan. Both census records indicate that Nancy was born in New York in about 1816. The 1854 record of daughter Emerilla's marriage to Lewis Platt Mitchell indicates that the wedding took place in the home of Harry Monroe in Newago Co, Michigan. Sid

She sent me a copy of 'Crofoot Genealogy', by Robert E. Crofoot...published in 1954. There is an Appendix giving some additional information. This is the answer to why Gideon and Samantha's daughter, Sophia was not mentioned in the Will..... "Gideon and Samantha Crofoot had a fifth child, Sophia, who was born in Painesville, Geauga Co. (now Lake Co.) Ohio, Feb. 14, 1818. Sophia Crofoot joined the Mormon Church at an early age. For this her parents drove her from home and never spoke to her again. Because of this her name does not appear in some records of the Crofoot family. She married a man by the name of Whitehead. He beat her and made her life miserable, so she ran away from him and her home. In Jan. 1838, Sophia married George Noakes (born in Sussex, England) in Commerce, Hancock Co., Illinois. After this remarriage they are believed to have followed Joseph Smith, Jr. and other Mormons to the Far West. It is thought that they were in the group of persecuted Mormons led out of Missouri by Brigham Young, while Joseph Smith and other leaders were still held in jail. By Oct. 1852, after much hardship, the Noakes reached Salt Lake City. The George Noakes family are listed in the Church Journal of Pioneers, July-December 1852, as owning one wagon, one horse and 2 oxen." Hope this information helps your research. Joan

I'm still in shock over your email! Yes, my husbands family had a John Wesley Shaffer. He was my husbands, Great grandfather. I have him listed as being born in May(?) of 1880, married Sept 24, 1901 to Hattie May Delong, in Castleton Twp., Barry Co. Michigan. John was the son of George A. Shaffer (Oct 13, 1833 - March 31, 1903) and Mary Crofoot/ Crawfoot..( June 1846 - Jan. 1928) Do these names and dates match with yours? According to the Barry Co. Mich. census of 1900 and 1910, Mary bore 5 children. I'm not sure of all the names, however, I have found a son, Frankie Shaffer, (Aug/12/1887 - Feb 9, 1891) buried with George and Mary in Barryville Cemetery, Castleton Twp. Barry.Co. MI. Also found, our Nancy Crofoot, buried in the same cemetery as Mary, George, Frankie, John, and John's wife, Hattie. Nancy Crofoot's tombstone reads: DOB: Feb 16, 1816, DOD: Nov. 15, 1895 In a census from 1880, I found George and Mary Shaffer listed along with children as being, John Shaffer and Step daughter, Emma Viers. According to this one, the children were both born in Ohio. (other census say MI.) If I remember correctly, I checked into this, and found Mary with another man, last name Viers, in Henry Co. Ohio. This made me really curious as I had also found another message on Genealogy.com's board, In re: to a Johann Martin Shaffer. Her name is Marilyn Spohn. Maybe she will have information that the two of you can share on the Viers... Not only did the Viers name catch my attention, but believe it or not...She has the same last name as my maiden name! Pretty odd... tracing my husbands heiratage, and finding out that our ancestors may have beat us to the punch! LOL!!! My brother in law will be sending me more family info shortly, and maybe it'll shed some light on this family. I looked for Conah Crofoot, but like you, didn't get much info. Just that his DOB is approx. 1808 in Vermont and he married Nancy approx. 1835, who was of Ohio.... Thanks so much for replying back to my message Judy! Keep in touch, as will I with you. And do try contacting Marilyn Spohn... I really think you two have alot of related anncestors! BTW: Yes.. Mary was native american... Crow Indian may have had blackfoot in her also. My sister- in - law said they were never suppose to mention that fact when they were children! Keep in touch! Debbie
