I believe it was spelled Sefer in Cabuna.
Kay, Are you serious? Another SCHAEFFER heard from! Wow! O.K., there are two SCHAEFFER /SCHAEFER lines in Milwaukee, one my aunt's family, and one the family of Charles, but both from the same small town Cabuna, and both coming to Milwaukee in the years just before WW1. Charles' family includes a marriage to my aunt's cousin, but we cannot find the probable common ancestor to these two lines, so far. Are you part of either family? My aunt's family spells it here with 2 FF's, Charles' family uses one F. In Croatia, my aunt's family was SAFER, possibly also SEFER as you write of your ancestors. I don't know that Charles has told me of how his family spelt it in Cabuna. Please do write again so that we may possibly connect you to these lines, and... oh-wouldn't-it-be-wonderful... maybe even find the prototype ancestor.
