I thought the LDS had filmed parish church records at State Archives in Croatia by, parish church, religious denomination, and town, as they had in most European countries in which they had filmed church records. FHLC For example,Croatia, Rijeka-Church records (2 of 5 below) Titles Maticna knjiga, 1785-1874 Rimokatolicka crkva Zupa Draga(Rijeka) Maticna knjiga, 1781-1907 Pravoslavna crkva Zupa Rijeka > http://www.croatia-in-english.com/rj/index.html > > Robert Jerin > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Christopher Shaw" <christopher.shaw@shawgenealogy.com> > To: <CROATIA-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Friday, June 14, 2002 9:10 PM > Subject: Unidentified subject! > > > > > I checked the CroatianGenWeb page to find out if the FHL might have filmed > the church records of the towm of Tompojevci. I think we are talking about the same thing. Records are filmed by each parish, ie parishes are not filmed together nor are towns of one parish filmed along with another parish on the same film. I believe what Christopher was asking was could Tompojevci been inc. with any regional films. The answer is no. The parish for Tompjevci is located in that town (since sometime in 1800s) and would not have been inc in any other regional film. The church located in Tompjevci may have served other towns/villages in the area, in that case if we search for those other towns/villages at LDS we are not likely to find them. In the case of a LDS search were no records are found, we need to determine if a church existed in that town. If no church existed then we need to determine which parish that town/village belonged to. Tom Ninkovich has developed one method, that appears to have been successful in many cases, by using Postal Codes. First check the NEW online phone book and determine if that town/village has a church. Find the postal code for the town/village in question and then bring up a list of all towns/villages in that Postal Code and find which one has a church. For instance in the case of my GMs village, Slapno (Karlovacka zupanija) 1) Phone book lists no church for Slapno (you need to search by county and look at all the listings) http://imenik.hinet.hr/?A=query&lang=1&def4d=selected&def1=Churches 2) LDS finds no records. http://www.familysearch.com/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp 3) Postal Code Search Type name using all caps then click on Traz"i! (means search) this will display Postal code which shows Slapno as shows Slapno as 47281 (Mali Erjavec Post office) then from the line which reads Podatak koji se pretrazuje select "Naziv pos"tanskog ureda, this will then give you all the towns/villages in that Postal Code. In the case of 4728` there are 11 towns/villages. http://www.posta.hr/mjestaasp/ 4) A search for churches in online phone book finds that only Svetice has a church today. http://imenik.hinet.hr/?A=query&lang=1&def4d=selected&def1=Churches 5) A search of LDS Family History Library finds they only have records for one of those 11 towns/villages.... What you write may be true in normal times. This was another special case. A church had existed in Tompojevci which is located 154 miles ESE of Zagreb in Vukovarsko z^upanija (county) Back on 13 December 2001 wrote : Tompojevci (z^upa Tompojevci) crke (svete Marije Magdalene) Crka je sagradjena 1856 a obnovljena 1906. Pripadnici pobunjenih Srba i Jugoslavenske narodne armije z^upni su dom opljackali, crku tesko ostetile a inventar potpuno unistili, u rujnu/prosincu 1991. (Parish Tompojevci) church St. Mary Magdalene. Church was built in 1856 and renovated in 1906. Members of the rebel Serbian forces and the Yugoslav National Army severely damaged the parish house and church and destroyed church inventory in September/December 1991. As far as I know the LDS had not previously filmed its parish church records ? > > In the case of a LDS search were no records are found, we need to determine > if a church existed in that town.
