    3. Since I posted my question about house numbering, I've found examples to confirm that sometimes new dwellings were accomodated by adding a letter to the house number, plus I've seen notes that numbers were changed, sometimes with an "=" or the word "novi", which I'm sure means "new". I have a lot of name/spelling questions, but think I will limit myself to this one (mostly because my notes are elsewhere): Question: what is the significance of the "ac" or "vac" surname ending? Is it Croatian? What about the "nik" endings? On some birth/christening records, I occasionally see two entries on the Location column, indicating different villages in the same parish. It seems as though the top one refers to the father, and the bottom one to the mother. I'll double check and see if the child is legitimate and if the mother's surname is shown as if she is married. If they are legitimate births, is there any other explanation than that the couple is living apart, perhaps because the father works too far away? James Birkholz PS I'm extracting christening records for Lokve and will publish them eventually. I don't know how many I'll have when I quit, but I'm in the 1886-7 years now.
