Ashley My aunt's mother's surname was Safer (or Saffer) and her father's surname was Kocevar. She was born somewhere on the Istrian Peninsula. She came to America in the 1920s preceded by her brother Peter. She married Leonard Carneluti and they later changed their name to Cornell. Does this fit with any of your information? Dick Puz
>Dick, and anyone else doing SAFER / SEFER / SCHAEFFER, etc. I am only working on the family from the Virovitica area. Shaeffer is not the most common German or Austrian name but the ones from Istria are not obviously related to mine, who are on the other side of Croatia, on the Hungarian border. On the other hand, CARNELUTI sounds familiar. Maybe my uncle who is Italian has some ties to that name, and I will try to ask him about it, but he doesn't do e-mail. Did I write down his son's address the last time we talked? Sorry to sound exhausted, which is why I cannot quite think tonight. One goes from A to B, but today started at 7 am with a 33 mile drive for a 9 am hike thru a wetland, and I just got home. Hours of hiking and then I went to another wetland where I am doing some research. Hiked some more, admired the skunk cabbage, quite amazing, hiked back, drove 35 miles home. E-mail awaits and I cannot reason from B to C, too complex. I will look for my cousin's address or phone my uncle and let you know sometime soon. In the meantime, any SAFER / SCHAEFFER from Cabuna, Novaki; also HENK or HANDKE; FACULJAK from Korenchani; BAKIC from Dugo Selo; WIRTZ from Cresac or Orecac; HARTUNG from Novaki; FIERST or FIRSCH from Cabuna: would you please write? I might have a pile of cousins for you. FACULJAK, by the way, is one of the rarest of USA names and I feel certain that all are related, rather closely. BAKIC also is a seldom found name, but I maybe do recall that Ellis has about 125 of them: I've been wondering where they all went. And I don't know of all of them, just the Wisconsin branch. If any one reading this has ties to more than one of those names, I'm sure some of my cousins are related to you. May I please try to put you in touch with them? Anyone else interested in wetlands, please write privately. And also, Dick, I don't think I can help with your branch of the SAFER family. Perhaps though, someone reading this will recognize a link to you. Good luck.
