I have, on loan from LDS, a microfilm of Roman Catholic parish registers of death for Rukavac, 1863-1883, text in Latin, and didn't have any problems figuring out what was written, (and I haven't had any Latin since the first year of high school, many moons ago.) month/s = mensis/mens year -annus day = dies son = filius daughter =filia The death registers I have include address (village name and house number), name, sex, age, occupation, date of death and cause of death. Occupation of 99.9% of the deceased was agricola (farmer) or the son/daughter of. What I did find interesting is that more vowels were used in the spelling of surnames. For example, Grgurina was Gergurina; Crnic was Cernic, etc. Roanne > Hello group, > > Will I have found that the LDS has a microfilm from the city my great great > grandfather came from. Here is a Latin / English translator on the net which may help you. http://www.nd.edu/~archives/latgramm.htm Normally you'll also find someone at the LDS who works/assists there that will be able to help you with the translation of latin words/headings. ----- Original Message ----- From: Den <markos@in-tch.com> To: <CROATIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2002 6:12 AM Subject: [CROATIA-L] Need translation samples. > Hello group, > > Will I have found that the LDS has a microfilm from the city my great great > grandfather came from. Hi Ron: below is a family picture that I received from my grandmother, my grandmother never explained who the people in the picture are, other than her mother, father, brother's and herself. I only know that the people in the picture are relatives and I assume they are from Austria... I believe the picture was taken in the Detroit, Michigan or Ohio area. My Grandmother's last name is Gjaric, also spelled Gjarich and Garich. My Grandmother also went by the last name Gjavis. My grandmother's father's name was Joseph (Josef) Gjaric and her mother's name was Celia (Cilija) Bukovcan. My Grandmother's name was Mary(also called Kathryn and Katy).... her brothers names are Milan, Steve and Nikke. My Grandmother and her brother's spoke Serbian/Croat (Hrvatski) fluently. I am not sure of the exact location my Great-Grandparents emigrated from. If it is not too much trouble, could you take a look at this family picture I have, in hopes you may recognize someone. My Great-Grandmother's maiden name is Bukovcan. She is the large women in the picture. My Grandmother who is in this picture was about 8 or 9 years old when the picture was taken... My Grandmother was born in 1917, so the picture was probably taken around 1925. The picture was most likely taken in the township of Greenfield in Michigan, USA. Thank you for your time.
