Possibly 6 or 7 different languages were spoken on the same ship. As a result, naval officers were required to know a certain number of words in each of the various languages spoken by the sailors under their command. Otherwise it created a number of problems if commands were given in a language certain sailors didn't understand. (Lieutenant had ordered 'shoot' , but two sailors thought he had said 'stay put'.
