1. [CROATIA] Sedek, Sefan Surnames

    3. My grandfather, Stefan Sedek immigrated here from Austria/Hungarian Empire around 1910. He was born around 1889. I would greatly appreciate any information about the Sedek family. The spelling of the surname may be different. He did document on his nationalization records that he was born in St. Ivans, Zabno - Croatia. Other areas/cities mentioned was Pec, Zsbor, Gkrozevac and Krizevci. Thanks

    3. Can we assume that there is only one surname? Which is SEDEK? Do you mean Naturalization Record, IE Citizenship? The place is Sveti Ivan Zabno... no comma... translated this means Saint John Zabno. He came from The Kingdom of Croatia, which was under the rule of the Habsburg Empire aka Austria-Hungary. Perhaps his name was spelled SEDLJAK there is a Stjepan SEDLJAK arr 1912 at the Port of New York First Name: Stjepan Last Name: Sedjek Ethnicity: Croatian, Hung Last Place of Residence: Kuzminec, Austria Date of Arrival: Oct 21, 1912 Age at Arrival: 28y Gender: M Marital Status: S Ship of Travel: La Touraine Port of Departure: Le Havre Destination Youngstown Ohio Next of kin in Croatia was his father Imbro Today this name is spelled Seđek the letter đ sounds like j as in joy or maybe a bit more like the G in George... the name would sound like sajak... like the game show host. A couple of comments about the discrepency with ages... what you have a suspected birthdate (the only reliable birthdate will be found in the parish records) The age we see on this manifest may in fact not be true perhaps due to military duties. 1912 was on the verge of WW I beginning... and if this Stjepan (which is Croatian for Stefan, Steven, Steve) was in fact born in 1889 he may not have been able to leave if he gave his actual age... as military duty began at age 21 and lasted 2 years... then after that there was another 10 years of Reserve Duty... Kuzminec is a bit to the east of Sv. Ivan Zabno and Krizevci... many Croatians in Youngstown came from that area... they attened Sts Peter and Paul RC church, which is still Croatian parish ... and where I did a genealogy seminar a couple of years ago. But then, alas your info was so scant that this is all speculation!
