Ivan Butkovich was the third son of Matt Butkovich. Mate was either in the logging or a related business. One of my aunts had recorded that he was killed when a tree fell on him in a forest I think near Mrkopalj. The other brothers were Anton, Matt, Peter, Paul and Valentin. Their was a sister Louise. Paul, Ivan and Valentin came to America and eventually settled in Appanoose County Iowa where they were employed as coal miners. Paul was killed in a mining accident. Ivan (I knew him as John) married Kate Padovic from Sunger who immigrated thru Pennsylvania to Appanoose County, Iowa where she stayed with her brothers until they married in 1907. Valentin married Francis Bubanj and they moved to New Mexico. John and Kate had eight children-one daughter survives at the age of 87. Valentin & Francis had four children I believe, one of thier daughters also survives. I don't know the names of any of my GREAT grandfather's (Mate) siblings, so we could very well be cousins. Nor do I know the children of Anton or if there are children. His wife's name was Judita. Peter died at the age of 16, I believe. I was hoping with all this renewed activity that a connection might be made in one of the two lines of my father's family. It would be fantastic to connect with a new cousin!
