Hi I have a Mathieu Guiranovich who was born about 1791, in Rugusa Dalmatia Austria, per his death certificate dated 1892. Which means best I can tell is Croatia. I also found a Guiranovich who died in Triest 09/13/1833, per a web search. In researching this surname I have come across several different spellings; Guiranovich and Giuranovich and I am not sure if either of these two spellings are correct. Since Mathieu came to America before 1850 and the French or Spanish may have spelled it differently back then when he arrived in America. Can anyone tell me how to go about ordering a birth certificate for 1791 for the above area. Thank You, Marie _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

When the Árpád dynasty (Hungarian) became extinct, the Croatians elected a Neapolitan (Napoli) prince Ladislas, king of Croatia (1409) and he sold Venice his rights to all of Dalmatia. By 1420 Venice controlled all of Dalmatia except Dubrovnik. The Republic of Ragusa was the Republic of Dubrovnik. The French entered the city-republic of Dubrovnik in 1806 and in 1807 incorporated it into the Illyrian Provinces. After the fall of Emperor Napoleon I, Austria regained all those territories that it had held prior to the Napoleonic era , as well as those they had held and lost between 1805 and 1809, plus Dubrovnik. Today Trieste is not part of Istria nor of Croatia, but Italy. 1867-1918 Trieste and Istria was part of of Austria under the dual Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. 1867-1918 Croatia-Slavonia was ruled by the Kingdom of Hungary as part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The LDS-Mormons filmed the Orthodox religion parish registers (1791-1921) for Ragusa, Dalmatia, Austria; now Dubrovnik, Croatia. But, the R.C. parish church registers filmed for above are many and by district and their dates vary. Text in Latin, Italian, and Croatian. These would require review of many, many microfilms for your surname ? In Croatia, any birth and death records older than 1860 were turned over to the Croatian historical archives. My understanding is that all religious records had been collected in regional State Archives, located at: Varaz^din, Zagreb, Bjelovar, Pazin, Rijeka, Karlovac, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, Sisak, Slavonski Brod, and Osijek. address Drz^avni arhiv Dubrovnik Sv.
