    3. Two interesting resources that do not list surnames but give general information about Croatian settlements and Croatian life in the US: 1. "They Chose Minnesota: A Survey of the State's Ethnic Groups" edited by June Drenning Holmquist. Minesota Historical Society Press, St. Paul, 1981. (DAR Library number 89747.) Chapter 20, "The South Slavs: Bulgarians, Croatians, Montenegrins, Serbs, and Slovenes" by June D. Holmquist, Joseph Stipanovich, and Kenneth B. Moss. Gives immigration and remigration figures, by year, by Balkan region. Interesting description of the lifestyle on �The Range� (the iron mines on the Mesabi iron range of Minnesota. Towns mentioned: Biwabik, Duluth, Buhl, Nashwauk, the Mesabi Range, etc. Talks about the percentages of Slavs in various states as gleaned from US census records. Gives examples about life in boarding houses and talks about importance of local ethnic drinking establishments and their role in preserving culture and language, fostering communication about jobs, receiving mail, providing translation services, cashing checks, etc. Ranks the order of US states with the most South Slavs in 1910: (1) Pennsylvania; (2) Illinois; (3) Ohio; and (4) Minnesota. Has a fantastic bibliography and some interesting photos. 2. �From Zadruga to Oil Refinery: Croatian immigrants and Croatian-Americans in Whiting, Indiana from 1890 - 1950� a PhD dissertation by Edward A. Zivich. NY, Garland Pub., 1990, 127p. Library of Congress call number F534, W47Z58, 1990. This does not name surnames and is not intended to be a genealogical study. It is about the Croatians, Slovenians, and Slovaks in Whiting, Lake County, Indiana. Their family, home and church life, and their work life and treatment by the Standard Oil Refinery (men) and Candle Factory (mostly Slovak women) is discussed.
