Linda Therkelsen from upper Michigan wrote recently requesting a translation of words found on some Croatian gravestones in the cemetery she's transcribing for posting in a database. I wrote her for more information, since one of the names mentioned is one I'm researching. She suggested visiting the Houghton county, Michigan site which she praised as being well organized. Yeah. If you have any reason to think your Croatian family came to the USA so someone could make money working in the mines, do take time to explore this site. The families and surnames list below is actually organized generationally, like a family record sheet. Some sheets have 4 generations listed. http://www.mifamilyhistory.net/houghton/families.html This is a listing of the cemeteries in Houghton county: http://www.mifamilyhistory.net/houghton/cemeteries.html Since Michigan doesn't release government records of births, deaths, and marriages, chasing names can be difficult. One of the web resources accessed at Houghton county is the compilation of early marriages by the DiBean family, which is organized by county. Amazingly, they don't just stop at the straits of Mackinaw, they include the UP counties: http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/dibeanindex/dibean_county.html I was excited enough to print out 12 pages of records from these sites and hope some of these new names will connect with data I have already, which represented single individuals with no known family. Now I may be able to give them back to their brothers and sisters. Good hunting, Ashley
