    3. I searched the internet earlier this year for the same thing. I found the following recipe, which I made for Thanksgiving. They taste almost like those Girl Scout shortbread cookies. Anyone know what Garabije means? I'm guessing cookie! CROATIAN GARABIJE 5 cups sifted flour 2 cups sugar 1 cup butter 1 cup shortening 6 egg yolks 2 tablespoons sour cream 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla Make as for a pie crust; roll out and cut with cookie cutter or cookie press. Bake 12 to 15 mintues at 350 F. I did not frost them or anything and used about a 2" round cookie cutter. The above yielded about 10 dozen cookies! Good luck! So here is what I have, The name appeared on the Ellis Island Passenger Record as Wiko Gvozdenica from Trnova, Austria, which I believe to be Croatia. Now I know who of my relatives or at least I think I do, came into this country. My grandfather, Pavao, his two brothers Anton and Stjepan both brothers I located in this country but only Anton did I find on any passenger record along with Wiko. My grandfather I found as I believe Paolo Govozdenica, I say it is him because all matches, year of entry, birth etc. Just have no idea who this Wiko Gvozdenica is as their is no one by that name listed in the research I had done in Croatia. 3. I have a middle name given to me when I was christened in the Catholic Church in Croatia. Middle names in recent times are a religious thing it has nothing to do with being rich these days. 1. Re: [CROATIA] Need a name meaning!
    2. Robert, while in Italian they may refer to him as Vico, this is a short informal form not used in official records. Until not so long ago these informal forms would not have been used in telephone books, passports etc. Just as f.i. Bill Clinton was sworn in as William, not as Bill. At times the church had rules about acceptable baptismal names. And the state has its own rules. In Italy the son could not be given his father's first name. I do not know whether this rule is still in force. In Croatia since independence the baby cannot be given more than one first name and there there is no custom of so called middle name. Tatjana
