I found a find soul to do a look-up for me in the "Leksik Prezimena Socijalisticke Republike Hrvatske", the 1948 Croatian census, here are the results: Puz' were numerous and mostly around Rijeka. First number is number of people, 2nd number in ( ) is number of households in village. There were 25 Puz in 8 families in Rijeka. Hello List I just wanted to share with you that when I opened my emails this morning, not expecting too much for a Sunday an email for Fra Ante Logara from Kapucini Samostan Sv Josipa who I had emailed back in early June. After this I emailed them twice more but had not heard back from anyone. My mother said to be patient as that some of the Priests had a long way to go to visit their congregations and had lots of villages to look after. That when they had time that they would write. I thought oh yeah, like all my other emails it'd be another door closing in my face. I also thought my only chance would be to travel there myself and camp myself in front of their door step and make a pest of myself. I'd just about given up hope and just about decided to go back to researching my husband's side of the family as I'd been able to go back as far as 1400's on one of his lines and still going strong. I've already complied a book on his tree and just wanted to concentrate on my line. At present I have over 1,000 names linked to his family line. I didnt realise that my Croatian Roots would take a year 1/2 just to locate where the records were actually held. But this morning I received a document attached to my email from Father Logara and when I opened it, it had 3 pages of names and dates that he had transcribed from the books he has at the Monestry. I'm still dancing and laughing around the room and can't contain my enjoyment. So I just wanted to say to all you others DONT GIVE UP it will happen just be patient and persistant. Now I have to wait for my parents to come over today to read the rest that I cant understand as he has written to me in Croatian and get them to write some things in Croatian so I can write back and thank him so much. Roanne, I am a Puz and my father was born close to Kvarner in the town of Spincici which is located between Opatija and Rejeka. He had two brothers, Ricco and Victor, and 6 sisters. My father's parents were Jonetti and Marija Puz. Victor came to the US in 1906 and my father arrived in 1921. They both went to PA. I do not have any individuals in my data with the given names of Mate or Josep. Good friends of my parents and grandparents were the Kinkela family (I think his first name was Frank). Two interesting resources that do not list surnames but give general information about Croatian settlements and Croatian life in the US: 1. "They Chose Minnesota: A Survey of the State's Ethnic Groups" edited by June Drenning Holmquist. Minesota Historical Society Press, St. Paul, 1981. (DAR Library number 89747.) Chapter 20, "The South Slavs: Bulgarians, Croatians, Montenegrins, Serbs, and Slovenes" by June D. Holmquist, Joseph Stipanovich, and Kenneth B. Moss. Gives immigration and remigration figures, by year, by Balkan region. Interesting description of the lifestyle on �The Range� (the iron mines on the Mesabi iron range of Minnesota. Towns mentioned: Biwabik, Duluth, Buhl, Nashwauk, the Mesabi Range, etc. Talks about the percentages of Slavs in various states as gleaned from US census records. Gives examples about life in boarding houses and talks about importance of local ethnic drinking establishments and their role in preserving culture and language, fostering communication about jobs, receiving mail, providing translation services, cashing checks, etc. Ranks the order of US states with the most South Slavs in 1910: (1) Pennsylvania; (2) Illinois; (3) Ohio; and (4) Minnesota. Has a fantastic bibliography and some interesting photos. 2. �From Zadruga to Oil Refinery: Croatian immigrants and Croatian-Americans in Whiting, Indiana from 1890 - 1950� a PhD dissertation by Edward A. Zivich. NY, Garland Pub., 1990, 127p. Library of Congress call number F534, W47Z58, 1990. This does not name surnames and is not intended to be a genealogical study. It is about the Croatians, Slovenians, and Slovaks in Whiting, Lake County, Indiana. Their family, home and church life, and their work life and treatment by the Standard Oil Refinery (men) and Candle Factory (mostly Slovak women) is discussed. I've stumbled across a book that may be of interest and if you can locate it at your library I think it would be worthwhile reading. It's called Kako zivi Narod - English (How people live : Life in the passive regions (peasant life) in southwestern Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina Yugoslavia in 1935. Translated to English. By Rudolf Bicanic; stephen Clissold translated (1941) completed and substantially revised by Marijan Despalatovic / Joel M. Halpern and Elinor Murray Despalatovic. I've gleaned quite a bit of Information from the list archives, but still have a few questions and am hoping someone can provide answers and/or direction for me. Questions: 1. The village of Rukavac, Kvarner, located 3.7 km N. of Opatija, is a chapelry of the Roman Catholic Church, Does this mean there is no church in Rukavac and the residents would "belong" to a parish elsewhere, (in Opatija) ? 2. Is it possible to get birth records from the opc'ine in Opatija for my grandfather, his brother and two sisters born 1891 - 1897? And, possibly a record of his parents' marriage? 3. Would their parish church still have their baptismal records and the Stanju Dusa/Knjiga Dusa (A Book of Souls)? I checked the LDS Family History Catalog but all they have is one microfilm, Maticna knjiga, 1863-1883: RC parish register of deaths for Sarsoni, Kustenland, Austria, now Viskovo, Croatia. Also Includes registers of deaths for the chapelries of Rukavac and Zvonece. Text in Latin. (Seems I saw somewhere Viskovo is now part of Opatija, so am wondering if this is the parish that covers Rukavac?) 4. On the ship's manifest, my grandfather's brother lists, as his nearest relative, his wife, Giuvanna (Ivanka) Puzz, Rucavac 75 Italy Istria. Is Rucavac 75 an address? If so, is it possible to trace ownership through property deeds? Again, at the opc'ine in Opatija? 5. Prior to WWI, at what age did the men begin their mandatory military service? I am also searching for someone from Fiume/Rijeka, Mata Sepic, born in Fiume in 1855/1856 and married Margaret Elliott in New South Wales in 1882. He was one of my wife's great-grand-fathers. Unfortunately his marriage certificate doesn't list either bride or groom's parents and I haven't found a naturalisation certificate which could give a clue. That made me think a year ago of trying to see if a Rijeka newspaper could print a little notice saying something like 'any readers know of a long-lost/distant relative, Mata Sepic, who went to Australia?'. I never got very far though as I couldn't get any emails through to what looked like newspaper editorial addresses (from their web-sites). Anyone else tried anything like this? Any successes and if so any email addresses? Can we get an English speaking journalist on a Croatian newspaper or radio station to join this list and publish our queries in Croatia? Linda Therkelsen from upper Michigan wrote recently requesting a translation of words found on some Croatian gravestones in the cemetery she's transcribing for posting in a database. I wrote her for more information, since one of the names mentioned is one I'm researching. She suggested visiting the Houghton county, Michigan site which she praised as being well organized. Yeah. If you have any reason to think your Croatian family came to the USA so someone could make money working in the mines, do take time to explore this site. The families and surnames list below is actually organized generationally, like a family record sheet. I was writing someone today about what I dislike about microfilms and thought it would perhaps be appropriate for the list. Like, I want all the young and innocent ones to be corrupted too, you who DO NOT KNOW as yet what microfilms will do to your mind. Away! begone! do not attempt this, only the old, jaded, and decadent,...and perhaps the truly desperate, should deal with microfilms.
