Thanking you for your interest in helping research my family in what was then Austria-Hungary - now Croatia. In answer to your three questions - most of my family from Austria-Hungary arrived between 1900 & 1915 (I do have their passenger lists) port of New York. Most of them were not naturalized.

Frank, other co-listers, Someone in Croatia gave me their email address but it has the mark over the C. If I send them an email without this mark, will they get it? My trip to Cres/Cherso was wonderful and I met many truly wonderful cousins I did not know I even had. Off season was the best for us as we got to see so much. We went to the graveyard and photographed the gravestones of our family and drove and walked from one end of the island to the other and went to Beli, Valun (had dinner here), Osor where there is a bust of an ancestor in the museum, Lubenice, Pernat and did some research for a friend in Mali Losinj. We rented a car in Trieste and drove through Italy, Slovenia and Croatia to take the ferry from Brestova to Cres/Cherso. Stayed at a wonderful pension (had a kitchen, living room, bedroom and bath) and the owner was wonderful and I am now helping her with some research. Went to my cousins Caffe Bar for a drink and met many, many locals. This island is absolutely beautiful and I shall return. Elaine

When the Árpád dynasty (Hungarian) became extinct, the Croatians elected a Neapolitan (Napoli) prince Ladislas, king of Croatia (1409) and he sold Venice his rights to all of Dalmatia. I also found a Guiranovich who died in Triest 09/13/1833, per a web search. In researching this surname I have come across several different spellings; Guiranovich and Giuranovich and I am not sure if either of these two spellings are correct. Since Mathieu came to America before 1850 and the French or Spanish may have spelled it differently back then when he arrived in America.
