Jackie The web page I mentioned earlier has a standand letter to use if you are writing to someone in Croatia and Frank here on this list has standard letters written in Croatian if you need to write to priests or archives. Please ask him to send you a copy. nkrtalic@arhiv.hr you could also send an email to this person asking where you should write to. It's the Archives in Zagreb. They may be able to give you some information on where to locate records on the family names you are interested in. The gentleman running this web page has just spent the past 6 months in Croatia and given me one of the biggest gifts I could ever ask for, he went personally to see the priest I had previous dealings with and took digital pictures from the books held at the church and even went out to the village my parents came from and took pictures of the grave stones of the names Im interested in. Jackie: I have researched both Poland and Croatia and would weigh in that if you've done Poland, you have nothing to fear from Croatia. Croatia is much easier, in my opinion, than Poland. Several instances among my cousins of a male on marriage taking his new wife's family name. In one instance, his wife was the last survivor of her extended family and wanted the name continued and he agreed. In most instances, some property was involved, the wife being a property owner and the husband assuming the name and probably assuming management of the property. Several of these people used a double barreled last name, not just one surname but two, as many English ( of England ) families do, the Smith-Crumley sort of name. In the instances of these several cousins, both names were rather uncommon, so the reason to use the new name wasn't to get away from being a Kovak or a Bauer. Reading about the older families in Split and Dubrovnic, many families there had cadet lines, over several centuries, where something similar occurred. Instead of just being a Smith or a Smythe, you became the Smith - Apples or the Smythe - Car's. And then when your kids moved away, they might be the Smythe - Car - Riejeka line, with the lineage sort of outlined in the name pattern, and sometimes even the towns lived in. She told me that her father had once told her that his father had taken the wife's surname at their marriage because she had come from a more affluent family than his. It seems to make sense since my great-grandfather listed his parents with the same surname on his social security application, and there is a note beside his mother's name that says "mother's name same before marriage." Jasper Kauzlaric was born about 1830 to Antonia & Ursula Kauzlaric and died 1 Nov. 1904 in Fuzine. 1850 -Aug 20 marriage Gaspara son Antonia & Ursula Kauzlaric and Katarinam daug of Josipa Pivca? 1855 March - death of Katarina age 35 wife Gaspara Kauzlaric 1855 July 1 - marriage of Jasper KAUZLARIC, Fuzine Kb.74, and Karolinum daughter of Silvestra POLIC, Benkovac Kb. 22. 1860 -Death Aug 19 Carolina KAUZLARIC, husband Jasparus KAUZLARIC, Fuzine kb. 74. At some time after the death in 1860 of Carolina and the birth of Paulina in 1862 to Jasper Kauzlaric and Maria Karlic he married Maria Karlic my GG Grandmother. The marriage records were filmed up to 1857.
