Sorry I have been out of pocket for last two days. Twins just manage somehow to keep a person busy - the little darlings! Anyway, I will copy here what I have on Mary (Polly) Crews and Charles BALLEW and give the sources. I have not worked on this line since the book so there may be new information out concerning these people which others can add to or which may need to be amended and changed. I received the info on Mary being a sister of David Crews from correspondence of Lyon J. Hoard and Joseph Ballew, of Kentucky. Mr. Ballew got his information from the French Tipton Papers. I have no other substantiation at this time, but perhaps others do. All of the following is on pg. 17 of my book (footnotes and sources are found on pg. 18). "Mary "Polly" (Crews) and Charles BALLEW settled in Madison Co, but it is believed they dlater moved back to Virginia, although this cannot be proven by their descendants. Charles BALLEW was in Kentucky at the Falls (Louisville) in 1782 on the payroll of Capt. John BOYLE and serving in the Lincoln County Militia. They were performing a tour of duty at the Falls of the Ohio under the command of Maj Hugh MCGARY pursuant to Col Benjamin LOGAN in 1782. The men entered service on May 28 and were discharged on June 18." (Harding, Margery Heberling, comp. George Rogers Clark & His Men. Military Records 1778-1784 - Frankfort: The Kentucky Historical Society, 1981, pg. 126.) "From 11 Oct to 11 Nov, 1782, Charles BALLEW (listed as "Blew") was serving in the militia under the command of Lt. John SOUTH and was helping to guard the frontier of Fayette County. (Harding, pg. 160). BALLEW also served in the Shawnee Expedition under Capt William HOY from 24 Oct to 14 Nov 1782. David Milton CREWS served in this expedition as well. (Harding, pg. 189-190). According to Joseph Ballew of kentucky, Charles and Mary "Polly" BALLEW had the following children: Mary HUBBARD, Elizabeth HEATHERLY, Susan Hollis HUBBARD, Annie HUBBARD, Green Lee BALLEW and Thomas BALLEW. Thomas was a preacher and known at "Preaching Tom." A will for Charles BALLEW, found in Madison Co Deed Book H, pg. 308, dated Sept 13, 1811, mentions land located on Tates Creek and a consideration of 70 pounds. Children mentioned are Leonard HEATHERLY and wife Elizabeth, David MASSEY and wife Jane (who were living in the Territory of Louisiana), George HUBBARD and wife Polly Hutson HOLLIS, John HUBBARD and wife Anna, and Thomas BALLEW. (Scott, Hattie Marshall, comp. Scott's Papers. - Frankfort: The Kentucky Historical Society, 1953), pg. 134. This is all I have concerning BALLEWs. Donna Porter
