Pat: James Meredith, Sr., & Mildred Bagby were my fifth great grandparents. James was born around 1715, but I have no documentation for that. I have a researcher working on it now. Nor do I have documentation for the date, place and parentage of Mildred Bagby. They died and were buried in Surry Co., NC, he in 1790 and she in 1796. I have copies of their wills. Children: 1. William b. 1744 Louisa Co., VA, d 1825 Adair Co., KY mar (1) Ann BONDS (2) Rebecca KEYS NOBLETT 2. James, Jr., b 1747 Louisa or Hanover Co., VA d 1820 Stokes Co., NC mar 1769 Bedford Co., VA to Mary CREWS b 1752, d 1823 Stokes County. Both William and James had Revolutionary Army service. William was a Capt. and received several pieces of land in NC for his service. He was later a sheriff, a Justice of the Peace, and a school teacher in Surry Co., NC. James was a Light Horseman according to NC Revolutionary Army Accounts. I have copies some of those accounts which show his service and what he was paid. He also received land grants of 1200 acres in NC for service. I have copies of those land grants. Both William and James are listed in the DAR Patriot Index. Mary CREWS was the daughter of Hardy CREWS and Phoebe GOOCHEE/DUCHEE. Her sister Ann married a man by the name of HUBBARD. Click on to the HUBBARD GenForum page for this story. I have seen info on the Internet which states that Mary married Hugh Meredith. This was not true. Quaker records in NC give much information about the James Meredith/Mary Crews family. 3. John b 1750-53, place unknown, mar 1771 Guilford Co., NC to Frances GIBSON. This may be the John that tried to prove relationship to the Cherokees, although I am not sure, and have no documentation. 4. Samuel b 15 May 1760 Goochland Co., VA d 1806 Pendleton District, SC; had two wives, names unknown, and possibly 11 children. 5. Mary, date and place of birth unknown, mar 1782-190 to Thomas Cheadle BURCH, Surry Co., NC. 6. Daniel, b 1762 Goochland Co., VA, d Hillsborogh, IL; married Hannah COOK 1787 Surry Co. NC I descend from James and Mary's eldest son David, who was b 19 Dec 1769 Bedford Co., VA d 1864 Wayne Co., IN; mar 1791 to Mary FARRINGTON, b 17 Dec 1774, d 1849 Guilford Co., NC. I have a copy of David's will. James and Mary had 9 other children. These names and dates have come down through Bibles and records of the family through the years. Many of the dates are corroborated by NC marriage records and Quaker records. Hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion about Mary CREWS. Although Simon Meredith in PA had a son James, he was not the James that married this Mary. His wife was Mary Nicholas. They married and lived in PA all their lives. He died there 1775, and she in 1802. Simon was a son of Hugh, and he also had a son named Hugh. It was the son of Simon that was in the printing business with Benjamin Franklin, and Simon put up some of the money for them to go into business together. This information is in Ben Franklin's writings. My ancestor James may have been a brother of the Simon and son of Hugh that came to America from Wales about 1708. Perhaps the researcher I have hired will unravel this part of the puzzle. Best regards, Joyce
