It sounds like you know more about this >John CREW than I do. I keep >wondering where people are finding the information such as b/d on first >John CREW, etc. I'd sure appreciate it. >........................ Pat and all... I feel somewhat bad about telling you about John Crew, in part because I have seen where many on this list count the John Crew, born 1 March 1660, as the John Crew who later married Sarah Gatley. I am afraid this is not possible. After John Crew of Accomac Co., VA died in 1660, his widow Elizabeth (I wish I had her name) married again, to a Robert Hignett. Elizabeth was seemingly intent on preserving some of John Crew estate for his three children and so made the following deposition (spelling as in document): "Know all yee whome theis may Concern tht I Elyzabeth Crew late wife of John Crew of Northampton Countie deceased doe out of the tender loue and Motherly Care of my said Children thatthe Lord hath given me by my Loving Husband John Crew who Leaving mee visible possessed of an estate, I doe therefore giue & make over unto my said Children being three in Number these things Fott:, vizt, six female Cattle with all their female Increase until they be of the age of foureteene years & then they are to have both male and females and alsoe three breeding Ewes with all their feemale Increase untill they be of the age of foureteene yeares as before mentioned these cattle and ewes to run a Joynt Stock amongst my said three Children untill they Come to foureteen yeare and then to be equally devided the first that attaines to the age aforemencioned is to have her equall part by pporcion & soe the other Likewise to have their part as aforemencioned & if one of my said Chilldren dye within those yeares before mencioned the the other two survyvers is to inioy the whole & if two should dye the third to inioye the whole & if all dye then the estate to fall to the giver againe and be at her disposing I doe alsoe give unto my sonne John Crewe one hundred and Fifty acres of land to be possessed thereof after my desease but iff my sonne dye in his Minoratie the my Daughter Anne is to be possessed with the abovesaid land: I doe alsoa giue my said sonne two Guns upon the tearmes before mentioned that if he should dye in minoratie they are alsoe to Fall to my two daughters I doe giue unto my Daughter Anne one Cheast after my deseace to enjoy it Theis things before mecioned I Elyzabeth Crew their Mother doe freely & absolutely giue unto my said Children their heires Executrs & admrs for ever peaceably & quietly to enjoy as their proper goods at the time before mentioned & for performance whereof I haue hereunto set my hand & seale this 25th day of April 1661. the Marke of Elyzabeth X Crew. Wit: Robert Hickeson [Hignett?], Henry Whyte. These Cattle I am if they increase & growe many itt is at my pleasure to Convert them to other use for the benefitt of my Chilldren without disturbance from any person entered the 26th November 1666. Anne Crew the Daughter of John Crew was borne 17th august 1655 Elyzabeth Crew was borne the first of November 1657 John Crew was born the first of March 1660" All in quotes from Liber B No. 1, pp. 37 and 38; Somerset County Court Proceedings. I could fill pages with the subsequent exploits of this John Crew and his stepfather Robert Hignett in Somerset Co., MD and Sussex Co., DE. They and Elizabeth were remarkable person in that time. When John made his will in 1713, he too mandated that his children were to be of age at "foureteene". John Hignett sold the 150 acres with Elizabeht consent before John was 14, when the family moved northward on the Eastern Shore, but John later signed the deed in his own right. John Hignett treated John Crew very well and John Crew prospered. John Crew named in his will, his grandson John Walls, my earliest ancester with my surname that I can find. Again, I am sorry for those of you that thought you were descended from this John Crew. Let us work together to find the common ancestor of both Johns. Sincerely, Brian Walls Columbia, Maryland.
