    3. Hi everyone, I found some more information about the families of Wilkes and Oglethorpe Counties of GA that were associated with Stanley Crews and his son Martin Crews who married a daughter of Reuben Jordan. I think we know that Reuben came to GA from NC, not VA. The Crews homestead was located a few miles SE of the Marks' place. This is from "Early Societies of Upper GA" by Harold Lawrence. "James Marks lived between the plantations of George Mathews and Nicholas Johnson (another VA settler) on the Broad River and Goosepond Creek, an area which became Oglethorpe County in 1793. Marks built a meeting house(Methodist) on his Goosepond Creek property and a second one on the north side of the Broad River in Elbert Co. during the period of 1805-1811 when he owned property there. The meeting house in Elbert became known as Asbury's Chapel, named in honor of Bishop Francis Asbury. In his journal entry of Sunday, 11-21-1813, Asbury wrote: "I preached in the new chapel at James Marks'--Elbert's --in folly called Asbury."............ Early Settlement. It has been established that George Mathews and many who settled with him were established in Goosepond by late 1784.......Virginia families who resided in Goosepond included the following heads of household: George Mathews, James Marks, Nicholas Johnson, Daniel Harvie, Reuben Jordan, Francis Meriwether, Benjamin Taliaferro(pronounced Toliver in GA), Thomas M. Gilmer, John B. Gilmer, Micajah McGehee and David Meriwether. These families had already experienced some intermarrying prior to moving to GA. After establishing themselves in the Goosepond settlement, relational ties intensified , and by the second and third generations, were incredibly complex. Goosepond, until it's population began to decline, was a self-contained Virginia society in the State of Georgia whose citizens were close-knit, and, to a great degree blood related...... Due to the Marks' experience in Albermarle County, Virginia, and his friendship with Francis Asbury , it has been plausible to assume that his society can be dated with the settlement. His zeal to build a larger house of worship near his home and his establishment of a chapel in Elbert County during the years he lived there were further indications of his influence in early Methodist development..... The Marks' property can be found today off GA Hwy. 77 between Lexington and Elberton, Georgia, on CR 195 between Hwy. 77 and Goosepond Creek. A granite marker close to the road indicates the property, as well as a bronze highway historical marker which points further down CR 195 to the homesite and cemetery of George Mathews." David
