December 01, 1801 in Oglethorpe Co, GA. He was the son of Joseph Crews and Agnes ?. He married Mary Elder June 18, 1792 in Campbell Co, VA. Mary Elder, born 1772 in Campbell Co, VA; died Bef. 1828 in Henderson Co, KY. She was the daughter of Joseph Elder and Mary Matthews. Joseph Crews died in 1800 leaving Polly with 4 small children. Her second marriage to William Crowley produced 7 more children. Georgia land lottery of 1806 allowed "all widows having a legitimate child or children under the age of 21 years, who have resided 12 months in this State, immediately preceeding the passage of this act, shall be entitled to two draws." Thus Wm. Crowley, husband of Joseph Crews' widow, appeared as #69 in the Oglethorpe County list of eligible drawers, claiming 1 draw for the four orphans of Joseph Crews, deceased. Source: Oglethorpe Misc. Records 158,725, list of eligible drawers lottery of 1806. A Joseph Crews is named in Joseph Crews will of 1798 in Amherst County, VA. Death date based on codicil of father's will of 1801 which says "reason to believe son Joseph is dead, his share to my daughter Nancy Franklin" Joseph Crews Jr is listed in the Amherst Co VA Tax List, Lexington Parish with one white male over 16, one horse owned. Joseph Crews Jr. served in Revolutionary War and received pension. Proof of the war activity of Joseph Crews Jr. may be found in his pension file, #W221. However, 18 Sep 1995 from Donna Hunter: Amherst deed dated 15 Jan 1829 which disputes information that Joseph Crews Jr ever married. "Elizabeth Powell, relict of Richard and Nancy Franklin, widow of James Franklin, (1) Ebenezer Gardner (2) Sarah Crews, wife of Thomas...8 Oct 1810, our late husbands sold to Thomas Crews 1/4 of 2 undivided tracts of Joseph Crews the younger, dec'd. Wives of grantors are sisters as is Sally Crews of Joseph the younger who died single and intestate." The children of Joseph Crews and Mary Elder are: i. Polly Crews, born Abt. 1793. ii. Williamson Crews, born July 28, 1793 in GA; died April 11, 1880 in Webster Co., KY; married Margery Marks. iii. Anne Crews, born 1794-1795. iv. Nancy Crews, born 1796 in GA; died 1873 in Webster County, Kentucky; married Henry Ashby August 27, 1816 in Henderson Co, KY. The following link is Carole Palmer's web site showing the line of Williamson Crews son of Joseph Crews and Mary Elder who moved to Oglethorpe Co, GA by 1793. Williamson was born in Oglethorpe Co., GA before going to KY. Makes me wonder if his wife Margery Marks was related to the James Marks who started the Methodist Church in Oglethorpe(see my note 11 Apr). Maybe Carole will comment on this since she has a large line of Marks. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cpalmer/marks/dat4.htm#0 The Sweetbrier property of Joseph Crews: http://ripley.wo.sbc.edu/departmental/president/www/presidency/sbhouse.html Joanne Black wrote this note on 30 July, 1999 Hi Melinda, Re. your note of 7/13/99: There has been much confusion on this Joseph CREWS who m. Mary "Polly" ELDER/ELDAR re. who his parents were. I am at this point showing him as "possibly but probably not" s/o Joseph CREWS b. 1747 will proved Amherst Co VA 1802 m. Agnes (unk) c1770. The will of Joseph b. 1747 states "I have reason to believe my son Joseph is dead in GA", and it had been thought that the Joseph he was referring to is Joseph (m. Mary ELDER/ELDAR) who d. bef 1 Dec 1801 Oglethorpe Co GA - but then they came across something that indicated the Joseph who was s/o Joseph was not married. But you are in luck, this is the line of researcher, Carole Palmer. I don't have a current email address for her, but she runs the Webster Co KY rootsweb site and you can find her there. Children Williamson (her ancestor) and Nancy both d. Webster Co KY, so there should be info on this family there, also. Haven't been in contact with Carole for a long while, so don't know if she has come up with anything new on this. Per my records Joseph CREWS and Mary ELDER/ELDAR had 4 children; Williamson b. 1793 d. 1880 m. Margaret "Margery" MARKS, Polly b. c1793, Nancy b. 1795/96 m. Henry ASHBY, and your Anne b. c1794/1797. I can give you desc. on Williamson and Nancy. Mary ELDER/ELDAR m. 2nd c1801 Oglethorpe GA William CROWLEY b. 1772 Pittsylvania Co VA d. 5 Sep 1828 Henderson Co VA. She and 2nd hsb brought the CREWS ch to Henderson Co VA c1810, he appears on a tax list there 1812. I don't have sources, but Carole should. We have NOTHING on the child Anne except her name and b. c1794/97 Oglethorpe Co GA, and we would really appreciate it if you could share what you know of her, her spouse, and descendants. Jo Email address: joblack@prodigy.net --------------------------------------------- I don't yet see any relationship between Joseph's family and Stanley Crews who who was living nearby in Wilkes Co, GA. But, the number of VA families we are finding that relocated in GA after the Rev. War due to bounty land grants is surprising. Hope this helps. David
