    3. I recently visited the SC Archives in Columbia, SC and got some copies of the early land grants of these Crews men: Joseph-1772/5/21, Samuel-1772/07/04, and John Cruise's land mentioned on the plat of Wm. Mills, 25 March, 1775. Thomas Crews and Samuel had audited accounts from the Rev. War. Thomas served as a private and as a lieutenant and signed his own name. Samuel had given Gen. Greene four head of cattle in 1782/3 and signed with an X on his claim. All of the above were in Colleton Co., SC. I got a copy of the bond put up by the wife(Elizabeth) of John Cruse, deceased, of Charlestown, dated Nov. 23, 1704. The bond was for 1000 pounds sterling. She was joined by Mr. Thomas Summers and Mr. John Miller as the three freeholders being bonded. Elizabeth was the administrix. I checked the ESCN index of old SC newspapers from the 1700's but the one Crews in the index turned out to be David Caws not Crews, an active member and deacon of the Parish of St. Philip's, Charlestown. There were two tax documents from 1825. One was for the estate of Joseph Crews in St Bartholomew's Parish, Colleton Co, SC.. It had "est of Joseph Crews 1824" written on the back. This is probably the same Joseph that obtained land in 1772. The other was for Benjamin Crews of Prince William Parish, Beaufort, Co, SC. His appeared to be for his own land of 565 acres. There is a third tax document which names John Crews Jr. paying taxes on the estate of John Crews Sr. in Colleton, 1825. We have four men, Thomas, John, Joseph, and Samuel living in Colleton Co.,SC about 1772. This link is a map of Colleton that shows the location of the Crews family halfway up the left side near the junction of the Salkehatchie Rivers. Mills' Atlas-1825 http://www.scroots.org/1825colleton3.html Jesse Cruise (his signature is spelled Cruise) received bounty land in Orangeburg District 13 Jan. 1785 for service in the Rev. War. Charles Crew(s) received land in Berkley Co, SC "in the fork between Broad and Saludy Rivers on a small branch of Bush River called the Wateree Branch in 1771.
