    1. [CREWS-L] Stanley and Handley Crews in Wilkes County, GA

    3. Hi All, When I was searching old newspapers some of them from the 1700's were difficult to read because they would write an "s" as an "f"( the bottom of the "f" would curve the opposite of the top). Sometimes a word containing two "s" like "states" would be written "ftates". I was looking at the archives regarding Stanley Crews of Wilkes County and came across a post by Bill Crews of Stone Mountain, GA where he gave us some records of both Stanley and Handley Crews from some books he has on Wilkes County. I believe these are the same man. The transcriber may have taken the "ft" on the front of the original as an "H" when it was actually the old way of writing ftandley or Standley. On 20 Feb., 1998 Bill Crews wrote, Crews rooters - I have 2 sets of books: (1) Wilkes County, GA, Deed Books A-VV, 1784-1806 by M. M. Farmer (2) Wilkes County, GA, Tax Records, 1785-1805, F. P. Hudson "6 Nov. 1800, Heirs of Handley Crews, decd, to James Crews, their bro., for love & affection by the dying request of our beloved sister Nancy Crews, who died after Handley Crews, decd., her father, all her distributive shar of the real estate of her said father, 570 on Clarks Creek, Adj. I have found the family of Stanley CREWS (wife Agatha) and we have them a little different from what you worked out. See how this looks: Stanley CREWS & Agatha ___? 1. Martin CREWS m. Jane Ware "Ginny" JORDAN 2. Patsy CREWS m. Simon HUGHES 3. Polly CREWS 4. Susannah CREWS 5. James CREWS 6. John CREWS 7. Nancy CREWS Stanley has no parents in the db and is linked to no other family. I've been unable to find Handley or James, etc. I think maybe I'll take you up on that offer of hard copies of the material for Wilkes Co. I'd like to see it too. Pat -------------------- On 16 Feb., 1998 I wrote, Minutes of the Supreme Ct. 1792-1793 Wilkes Co, GA Pg.72-Apr.11, 1793. James and Nancy Crew choose Martin Crew guardian, George Barber and Francis Callaway, Security. Pg.73-Agatha Crews appointed guardian of David, Frances, and Elizabeth Crews, orphans of Stanley Crews. ( I believe these were her own children and Stanley her deceased husband. The orphans of Stanley later participated in the GA lotteries) Crews, Stanley dec'd. Warrant of the appraisement Feb.7, 1793. Petition of heirs Nov. 1800 for div of 570 acres on Clark's creek. viz; Martin Crews, Agnes Crews, wid., for herself and as gdn of Betsy and Francis Crews, minors; Simon Hughes in right of his wife Patsy; Benajah Smith in right of Clayton Talbot who intermarried with Polly Crews; Susannah, James and John Crews and the heirs of Nancy Crews. ----------------------- The Handley citation was about one of his heirs (Nancy his daughter) dying and leaving her brother James her 1/10 share of the land. In the Stanley citation the family is petitioning the court to divide the land The 570 acres of land on Clark's Creek is common to both actions. Both actions took place in Nov.,1800 and the heirs are the same. Both mention the heirs of Nancy Crews. - ---------------------------------------- These are the ten children of Stanley (died 1793) and Agnes Crews (died bef.1804) if you combine these records: 1. Martin Crews m. Jane "Ginny" Ware Jordan (parents of Reuben J. Crews) 2. Patsy Crews m. Simon Hughes 3. Polly Crews m. Clayton Talbot 4. Susannah Crews 5. James Crews m. Benedictine 6. John Crews m. Elizabeth (Moved to Camden Co. abt. 1786) see below 7. Nancy Crews-Died prior to Nov., 1800, believed to be childless 8. David Crews 9. Francis?("Fanny" Crews m. Charles S. Marton) 10.Elizabeth ( may be Betsy in the minutes) Bill, I didn't notice before but you gave us a clue to a man that has been a mystery for a long time. Bill wrote: P. 783: "14 Nov. 1804, John Crews of Camden Co., Ga. to James Crews of Wilkes Co., Ga, for $200, 57 acres on clark Creek in wilkes Co., adj. Bramlett. (signed) John Crews. Wit: C. S. Marton, Simon hughs, George Johnson, J.P. Rec. 13 Dec 1804." It appears that John had returned to Wilkes in 1804, probably at the time of his mother's death. He signed at least three documents in two days. John Crews of Camden Co., GA is now attached to this family. He was on a tax list about 1786 in Camden and I have a land survey of his 450 acres on the Satilla River dated 1797. His wife was Elizabeth. They sold that 450 acres in 1797 and purchased 287 1/2 acres on the Great Satilla River on 8-19-1801 and sold it on 1-24-1808. There are two mentions of him in the court records in 1807. That's about all I have on him at this time. We know that the Stanley family intermarried with the Crewses in NC and some Crews men bore that name so that might be where we find Stanley's roots. But, on the 1850 census of Colleton Co., SC the Stanleys are listed beside the Crews family. When I was in Colleton I visited a church where the Crewses still attend and it had a graveyard with a lot of Stanleys. The oldest one was spelled Standley. David
