William HUGHES married Susannah _____, born ABT 1728 (?), died AFT 1820. William died 21 Jun 1802, Amherst Co, Va. . On April 11, 1769 an entry (page 438) in the Amherst County, Va deed book, recorded the purchase of land by William HUGHES, of Amherst County. The land was 375 acres along a branch of Harris Creek and part of 578 acres granted to James CREWS by deed from George CARRINGTON and recorded in Amherst County. This land was purchased from James CREWS and wife, Mildred, both of Amherst County. This transaction was witnessed by Jno. FLOYD, Jos. CREWS, Jno. CREWS. (Taken from Deed Book of Amherst County, Va Ref# 929.355 D26b, page 53) On June 21, 1802 the will of William HUGHES was probated in Amherst County. This will is posted in Book 4, page 36 and shows to have been written on SEP 20, 1800. It was witnessed by Jas. STEWART, Jno. RICE and Roderick TALIAFERRO. The will leaves to his "son, Harrison HUGHES, 92 acres next to land I bought of Jos. and Jno CREWS. To son William, I leave the Mansion House and 190 acres. To my executors, my six daughters and my son Orlander, I leave land next to Norcut on the Fawn Creek." The Executors of the will are Sons, Harrison HUGHES and William HUGHES. Book 4, page 67 list the slave inventory as prepared by the Inventory committee of Nelson DAWSON, Pleasant DAWSON, Archelaus WRIGHT. The inventory was dated Jan, 8, 1803. The Administrators Bond was posted by Harrison HUGHES, Pleasant DAWSON, Ambrose and Phillip BURFORD, June 21, 1802 for Harrison HUGHES. (Taken from "The Wills of Amherst County, Va 1761-1865" by Rev Bailey F. Davis. Ref # 975.5496 P2d Susannah: Susannah was named as widow of William HUGHES in the settlement of his estate. Susannah possibly died on June 6, 1830. An article in the Lynchburg Virginian newspaper (June 17, 1830, page 3, col4) states Mrs. Susannah HUGHES died in Amherst County at the age of 102 years. It gives no further details therefore, it remains a question if this is the same Susannah HUGHES. Children: 2. i William HUGHES. ii Harrison HUGHES married 6 Oct 1798, in Amherst Co, Va, Nancy TINSLEY, (daughter of William TINSLEY and Elizabeth HARRISON). He was a witness to the will of John BURFORD on 21 DEC 1807 in Amherst County. On Oct 14, 1797, he bought 30 acres on Fawn Creek from John CREWS, adjoining property was Pleasant DAWSON. From Amherst Co Deeds: "8 Sept. 1815: Harrison HUGHES & wife Nancy, Lynchburg, to Pleasant DAWSON, 38 acres, Harris Creek. Grantee/grantor Wm HUGHES, deceased. "1 Mar. 1823: William MUSE, Amherst to Millner COX...all interest in estate bought from Harrison HUGHES, part of the estate of William HUGHES, Sr." Nancy: The 1830 Census for Amherst Co, Va shows a Nancy HUGHES to be head of household on page 516, entry 26. Residents of the house are: 1 white male between 15-20, one white female between 60-70, four slaves. iii Orlander HUGHES. On March 21, 1814, a Amherst County Committee, found Orlander HUGHES to be insane and declared him a lunatic. The committee was Justice of the Peace, Nelson DAWSON , Chas. MUNDY, P. JOHNSON. 3. iv Amy HUGHES. v Judith HUGHES married 30 Dec 1789, in Amherst Co, Va, Wrenny CREWS, born Campbell Co, VA. Wrenny: Marriage record shows him to be a bachelor of Campbell Co.
