    3. Hello everyone, no I haven't been ignoring you all just been very busy with personal matters. I read the latest exchange of emails on my line with great interest. I have recently come into contact with a previously unknown Crews cousin and she and another cousin have evidently done extensive research on our line. I am currently waiting for a letter from her on the details of what they have found. When it comes I will let you know. Charlie Ottosen aa212@neale.gpfn.sk.ca

    3. Could you be referring to the Ethelred CREWS who m. Susannah RUSSELL? He was born and m. in Wilkes and Washington Counties, GA and left a will in Putnam County, GA. IF so, I'd love to hear what anyone has on him. He's been on my most wanted list for ages. I can't seem to connect him to any of the other GA Crews'. 1. [CREWS-L] History of Harris Creek, Amherst Co., VA

    3. >From the Hughes-L list: ============================================================ Date: Sat, 06 Feb 1999 11:22:20 -0600 From: Vince Hughes <bvh@bellsouth.net> To: HUGHES-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <36BC7A4C.2C76@bellsouth.net> Subject: [HUGHES-L] Trader HUGHES Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Since my earlier posting on the HUGHES-Root List, a number of persons have asked for more details on the "TRADER HUGHES" story. So here is the legend, the facts and the mystery. THE LEGEND: Most histories of Amherst County, Va recount the first settler in the area as being an Indian trader known as "Trader Hughes". He, along with his Indian wife, Nikiti, established a trading post on the James River about a half-mile west of the mouth of Otter Creek. (From present day maps, this location would be near 70.367371 degrees by 37.561035 degrees.) The date of this trading station has been put between 1710 and 1720. This location was where several Indian paths intersected and near the river access to the "Valley of Virginia". This must have been a busy intersection by 1710 standards! According to Dr. William Cabell, HUGHES had the first stone chimney in the area, which qualified him at the first permanent settler. Hughes' wife, Nikiti, is said to be descended from the legendary Princess Nikiti and related to Pocahontas. Trader HUGHES and his wife had a daughter named Abadiah. Robert Davis explored the James River and found the trading post on the north side. There he met Abadiah and married her. They soon separated and Robert Davis left Va with is second wife, leaving Abadiah behind. But before Davis left, they were visited by William Floyd. Floyd later married Abadiah and their son John Floyd played an important part of the formation of Amherst Co. THE FACTS: I have traced my ancestors back to William HUGHES of Amherst Co. by tracking the ownership of property that was passed from father to son. This property plays a key role in unraveling the family connections. The property is described as located on Harris Creek near a small branch known as Fawn creek in present day Amherst Co. (not far from the Tobacco Row Mountains). The "Executives Journals of the Council of Colonial Virginia", V. 5, page 136, gives the 1743 patent of George Carrington for 6000 acres on both sides of Harris Creek on the north side of the Fluvanna River in then Goochland County. Page 249 of this book gives the petition of George Carrington to include the adjoining patents of John Floyd and Orlando Hughes in his acreage. So we have a HUGHES owning land on Harris Creek as early as 1743. We know from Albemarle and Amherst County deeds that both George Carrington & Orlando HUGHES were of Cumberland Co. We know that George Carrington of Cumberland Co sold land on Harris Creek to James Crews, and that James Crews sold land on branches of Harris Creek to William Hughes. We know that one of the witnesses to this deed was John Floyd and a John Floyd was an adjoiner to the patents of Orlando HUGHES and George Carrington. We know that William HUGHES had a son named Orlander - probably his eldest son. Orlando HUGHES died in Cumberland Co in 1768, naming sons Josiah, Anthony, Caleb and Leander. A Micajah HUGHES was a witness to the will. William Hughes of Amherst County, who died in 1802, was my 4th great grandfather. THE MYSTERY: Was William HUGHES another son to Orlando? Or a grandson to Orlando? Who is Micajah HUGHES? Was Trader HUGHES a son to Orlando HUGHES, possibly Caleb or Anthony? Comments? William HUGHES married Susannah _____, born ABT 1728 (?), died AFT 1820. William died 21 Jun 1802, Amherst Co, Va. . On April 11, 1769 an entry (page 438) in the Amherst County, Va deed book, recorded the purchase of land by William HUGHES, of Amherst County. The land was 375 acres along a branch of Harris Creek and part of 578 acres granted to James CREWS by deed from George CARRINGTON and recorded in Amherst County. This land was purchased from James CREWS and wife, Mildred, both of Amherst County. This transaction was witnessed by Jno. FLOYD, Jos. CREWS, Jno. CREWS. (Taken from Deed Book of Amherst County, Va Ref# 929.355 D26b, page 53) On June 21, 1802 the will of William HUGHES was probated in Amherst County. This will is posted in Book 4, page 36 and shows to have been written on SEP 20, 1800. It was witnessed by Jas. STEWART, Jno. RICE and Roderick TALIAFERRO. The will leaves to his "son, Harrison HUGHES, 92 acres next to land I bought of Jos. and Jno CREWS. To son William, I leave the Mansion House and 190 acres. To my executors, my six daughters and my son Orlander, I leave land next to Norcut on the Fawn Creek." The Executors of the will are Sons, Harrison HUGHES and William HUGHES. Book 4, page 67 list the slave inventory as prepared by the Inventory committee of Nelson DAWSON, Pleasant DAWSON, Archelaus WRIGHT. The inventory was dated Jan, 8, 1803. The Administrators Bond was posted by Harrison HUGHES, Pleasant DAWSON, Ambrose and Phillip BURFORD, June 21, 1802 for Harrison HUGHES. (Taken from "The Wills of Amherst County, Va 1761-1865" by Rev Bailey F. Davis. Ref # 975.5496 P2d Susannah: Susannah was named as widow of William HUGHES in the settlement of his estate. Susannah possibly died on June 6, 1830. An article in the Lynchburg Virginian newspaper (June 17, 1830, page 3, col4) states Mrs. Susannah HUGHES died in Amherst County at the age of 102 years. It gives no further details therefore, it remains a question if this is the same Susannah HUGHES. Children: 2. i William HUGHES. ii Harrison HUGHES married 6 Oct 1798, in Amherst Co, Va, Nancy TINSLEY, (daughter of William TINSLEY and Elizabeth HARRISON). He was a witness to the will of John BURFORD on 21 DEC 1807 in Amherst County. On Oct 14, 1797, he bought 30 acres on Fawn Creek from John CREWS, adjoining property was Pleasant DAWSON. From Amherst Co Deeds: "8 Sept. 1815: Harrison HUGHES & wife Nancy, Lynchburg, to Pleasant DAWSON, 38 acres, Harris Creek. Grantee/grantor Wm HUGHES, deceased. Residents of the house are: 1 white male between 15-20, one white female between 60-70, four slaves. iii Orlander HUGHES. On March 21, 1814, a Amherst County Committee, found Orlander HUGHES to be insane and declared him a lunatic. The committee was Justice of the Peace, Nelson DAWSON , Chas. MUNDY, P. Surety for the marriage was provided by Harrison HUGHES, Judith's brother with permission of her father, William HUGHES. 4. vi Mary Ann HUGHES. ______________________________ - ----------------------------

Petition of heirs Nov. 1800 for div of 570 acres on Clark's creek. viz; Martin Crews, Agnes Crews, wid., for herself and as gdn of Betsy and Francis Crews, minors; Simon Hughes in right of his wife Patsy; Benajah Smith in right of Clayton Talbot who intermarried with Polly Crews; Susannah, James and John Crews and the heirs of Nancy Crews. ----------------------- The Handley citation was about one of his heirs (Nancy his daughter) dying and leaving her brother James her 1/10 share of the land. In the Stanley citation the family is petitioning the court to divide the land The 570 acres of land on Clark's Creek is common to both actions. Both actions took place in Nov.,1800 and the heirs are the same. Both mention the heirs of Nancy Crews. - ---------------------------------------- These are the ten children of Stanley (died 1793) and Agnes Crews (died bef.1804) if you combine these records: 1. Martin Crews m. Jane "Ginny" Ware Jordan (parents of Reuben J. Crews) 2. Patsy Crews m. Simon Hughes 3. Polly Crews m. Clayton Talbot 4. Susannah Crews 5. James Crews m. Benedictine 6. John Crews m. Elizabeth (Moved to Camden Co. abt. 1786) see below 7. Nancy Crews-Died prior to Nov., 1800, believed to be childless 8. David Crews 9. Francis?("Fanny" Crews m. Charles S. Marton) 10.Elizabeth ( may be Betsy in the minutes) Bill, I didn't notice before but you gave us a clue to a man that has been a mystery for a long time. Bill wrote: P. 783: "14 Nov. 1804, John Crews of Camden Co., Ga. to James Crews of Wilkes Co., Ga, for $200, 57 acres on clark Creek in wilkes Co., adj. Bramlett. (signed) John Crews. Wit: C. S. Marton, Simon hughs, George Johnson, J.P. Rec. 13 Dec 1804." It appears that John had returned to Wilkes in 1804, probably at the time of his mother's death. He signed at least three documents in two days. John Crews of Camden Co., GA is now attached to this family. He was on a tax list about 1786 in Camden and I have a land survey of his 450 acres on the Satilla River dated 1797. His wife was Elizabeth. They sold that 450 acres in 1797 and purchased 287 1/2 acres on the Great Satilla River on 8-19-1801 and sold it on 1-24-1808. There are two mentions of him in the court records in 1807. That's about all I have on him at this time. We know that the Stanley family intermarried with the Crewses in NC and some Crews men bore that name so that might be where we find Stanley's roots. But, on the 1850 census of Colleton Co., SC the Stanleys are listed beside the Crews family. When I was in Colleton I visited a church where the Crewses still attend and it had a graveyard with a lot of Stanleys. The oldest one was spelled Standley. David

    1. [CREWS-L] Reuben Jordan Crews Line-GA and TX
    2. David Harris
    3. Brenda, Thank you for those kind words and thank you for all your hard work from which I know we've all benefited. All I have on Martin and Ginny Crews' descendancy is the information that Charles Ottosen has posted regarding his line. You may remember the discussion we had last year about whether Martin was the father of Reuben. While we still don't have solid proof, we do have some supportive evidence in the Jordan and Crews wills of Wilkes and Oglethorpe Counties in GA. Here is what Charles posted about his line. - ------------------------------------------ "[Note: this first generation is entirely heresay - no documented proof on any of them except for Reuben] Martin Crews - do not know his dates, locations or wife. Family legend says "... of Revolutionary fame" whatever that may mean. Had the following children: Reuben Jordan Crews, James Ware Crews, Martin Mortimer Crews, James Fleming Crews, Elizabeth Crews. Family legend says Martin was wealthy but never married. My descent goes through Reuben J. Crews. His dates are ca 1804 to ca 1854; m. 1828 in Harris Co., GA to Elizabeth Philips. Reuben was an attorney and owned land in Harris Co. Their children are (all born in GA): Charles Constantine (C.C.) Crews (b. ca 1830), Leonidas Crews (1831 - 1903), Algernon Crews (d. age 2), James Mortimer Crews (b. ca 1836), George M. Crews (b. ca 1838), Fleming Jordan Crews (b. ca 1841), Jackson Philip Crews (b. ca 1844), Sarah (Sally) E. Crews (ca 1846 - 1860). Charles, James and Fleming were all officers in the Confederate Army and Leonidas (a doctor) was a surgeon also in the Confederate Army, Jackson was a Baptist preacher. My line descends through Leonidas who m. 1861 in GA to Sarah Helen Coachman (from South Carolina). They had 14 children (first 7 born in GA the last 7 born in TX): Clarence (1862-1941), Eulalie (1866-1892), Floyd (1867-1958), Donella (1868-1922), Elma (1870-1874), Percival (1871-1955), Stella (1873-?), Wilkinson (1875-1945), Helen (1877-1913), Simmie (1879-?), Leonidas (1881-1888), John (1883-19430, Hugh (1886-1949), Lizzie (1888-?). Leonidas moved the family to Texas in 1875 and settled in Hamilton Co. My line of descent is through Floyd who married a Rowe McKinnie in 1893. They had two children in Texas before moving to Washington D.C. in 1899 where they had four more children. Any leads for the earliest generation and where they came from prior to Ga would be greatly appreciated. I am also very interested in contacting other descendants of the Crews brothers who were officers in the Confederate Army. I do have more information - especially on the later generations which I am willing to share if anyone has a connection to these people. Thanks for listening. Charlie Ottosen aa212@GPFN1.GPFN.SK.CA" - ------------------------------------- In another post he adds some more: - ------------------------------------- Since Pat has indicated we are now over 100 subscribers I shall repost my line in the hopes that someone new will recognize a name. Martin Crews (no dates) possibly m. to a Ginny Gordon or Jane Jordan - had the following children: Reuben Jordan Crews, James Ware Crews, Martin Mortimer Crews, James Fleming Crews, Elizabeth Crews [note: no one except for Reuben in the above family has been proven] Reuben Jordan Crews (ca 1804 - ca 1854) m. 1828 to Elizabeth Philips - had the following children: Charles Constantine Crews, Leonidas Crews, Algernon Crews, James Mortimer Crews, George M. Crews, Fleming Jordan Crews, Jackson Philip Crews and Sally Crews. Leonidas Crews (1831-1903) m. 1861 to Sarah Helen Coachman - had the following children: Clarence C. Crews, Eulalie Crews, Floyd C. Crews, Donella Crews, Elma Crews, Percival C. Crews, Stella Crews, Wilkinson C. Crews, Helen Crews, Simmie Crews, Leonidas C. Crews, John C. Crews, Hugh C. Crews and Lizzie Crews. Floyd C. Crews (1867-1958) m. 1893 to Rowe McKinnie - had the following children: Clarence McKinnie Crews, Cora H. Crews, Floyd H. Crews, Maurice A. Crews, Sybil R. Crews and Mildren Crews. I have dates and spouses for most of the above children if anyone needs to verify and doublecheck the names. I am particularly interested in finding descendants of the children of Reuben J. Crews as four of his sons (including my Leonidas) served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Charlie Ottosen aa212@GPFN1.GPFN.SK.CA - ---------------------------- To get this information I went to the archive search page and typed Crews-L and hit RETURN. Then a search phrase such as Reuben Crews for 1998. Search page: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl David

    3. Hi David, There was also a Reuben Crews that surveyed Cherokee and Forsyth land parcels (GA) in 1827 for the land lottery. Do you have any idea of his connection? Also, will you share the descendants you have for Martin Crews/Cruise and Jenny Jordan? Thanks for all the research you share on this list, I enjoy reading your posts and save most to my zip drive to refer to later. 2. I am researching the CREWS Surname and I just found out about a John Crews (1730-1820) from North or South Carolina. It is believed that he married Nancy Collins and they had most of their children in the Colleton District of Charleston, South Carolina. Does anyone on the list have any information that they could share with me on this Family? Thanks, Harold in Florida hb-wb@mindspring.com .com =20

    2. David Harris
    3. Hi All, I recently received this information from a descendant of Isham Crews and Mary Johnston. Can any of you shed light on Archibald Crew of NC and his relationship to this Georgia line? "I am trying to find an earlier Archibald Crew born ca 1771 in NC. He was listed on the Mortality list 1850 Wayne Co., Ga Census. He died at the age of 79 in March of 1850. He was living in the household of Mary Crews, widow of Isham. (It is possible that Isham was serving in the military but I have not found him since the 1840 Census and I have presumed that he died.) I believe that this Archibald is possibly Ishams father and that Archibald is the son of John Crews."

    1. [CREWS-L] Berry Cruce query
    2. Charles Ottosen
    3. Hi everyone, I have a question that comes from one of my sisters-in-law family. Her brother has traced one of their lines back to a W. Berry (Benjamin) Cruce. He was born in March 1815 in Georgia and married Sept. 7, 1845 in Lumpkin Co., Georgia to Jane P. Hicks (Aug 12, 1828 in GA - June 21, 1900 in Jackson Co., GA). They had the following children (all born in Georgia): Will T. Cruce (1846-1924), John M. Cruce (1853-1924), Meany Cruce (1855-?), Delila Cruce (1857-?), Benjamin Cruce (1858-?), and Amanda Cruce (1859-?). Their line of descent runs through John who was married on May 16, 1869 to Polly (Mary) Batchelor (1845-1931). Will also married a Batchelor. Does anyone have any information on this family? 3. To HHMc@aol.com Speaking of typos (this was a brain malfunction, not a typo), in my 6/27/99 note to HHMc@aol.com, where I said: " Re. your 6/24/99 post about whether John MC BRIDE m. Nancy CREWS was s/o Thomas MC BRIDE, I can see why you question it. It appears that the W. H. Miller manuscript lists John as s/o Joshua MC BRIDE? I saw this in some old Prodigy bb notes posted 11/21/95 by Pat Ray." I meant to say: Re. your 6/24/99 post about whether John MC QUEEN m.
