I'm looking for information on Lucinda HOOD who supposedly married James CREWS in Buckingham Co. VA in 1784. She supposedly had a brother named Aaron HOOD. Aaron and Lucinda migrated to TN by 1797, settling in the area that became Knox Co. Was the John HOOD who supposedly married Lucy WILSON in 1793 (in Campbell Co. VA) and lived in Buckingham Co. VA a brother of Lucinda and Aaron? I'm wondering if the above HOODs are related to the Albemarle Co. VA HOODs, since Buckingham Co. was created from Albemarle Co. in 1761. Also, James CREWS died in Knox Co. TN in 1841. A John HOOD was a witness to his will. Who was this John HOOD? I don't know if I am connected to this HOOD family or not, but it would be nice to know who was who since a few of my HOODs did move from Greene Co.TN to Knox Co. TN. Who knows, they may really be related, even if only distantly. I appreciate any help. Vickie Elam White

Hi, DJ--Long time no write. How's it going out there? Are you on high ground? Things are a little shaky here in SoCal. Finally got around to looking at all my emails and was shocked to discover so many of my names in your message. The "Payne, Moorman, Elijah Jones" all in a row really stuck out. We have talked about the Paynes and Moormans before but Elijah Jones is somebody I've been looking for for awhile. He married my ancestor Julia Moman (Moorman) Payne after she was widowed in Missouri abut 1842. I assume this Elijah Jones was farther back? Maupin (Tn.), Ballenger, Berry (the name David appears often in the Quaker Berrys), Payne, Moorman, Elijah Jones, Fox, Crew/s, Hoover, Beall and Cox. For what it may be worth. DJ
Sorry, list--meant that to go to Susan. DJ
You know, this could be the same Elijah--depending on age, of course. He would have been about 56 in 1842, still young enough to have children by a younger wife if the widow was such. Another thing occurs is that Quakers almost always named their children after their parents so he could be a grandson of Elijah as well. DJ
Hi Susan; I heard about the big earthquake in Joshua Tree. Have I missed another one? I'd take an earthquake over a tornado any day. I used to tell my mother at least if I go, I will go dry. Of course, I've always luckily lived miles from a fault line. I'd live spot on one if I could get back to Ca. which I'm hoping to do next year. I plan to come out sometime in the spring but first have to get through Christmas and moving my daughter and her three on to the next place. All I have on Elijah Jones is that he was twin to Elisha, sons of John and Margaret Benson Jones. They were orphaned at age 9 and Elisha was raised by David Jenkins whom Elisha took with him to Ohio. Elisha was a chairmaker. He married Susanna Hollingsworth, Jr., d/o Susannah Wright and Big Isaac Hollingsworth. Elisha was b. 1 Jan 1786, d. 7 Sep 1841, presume d. in Ohio. After Susannah, Jr. was killed by lightning while standing in her doorway, Elisha m. Rebecca Pearson. I don't remember where I got the info about the twin brother but I'm certain I was given the info. Haven't made any effort to confirm it since it's not in my area of interest. Surely the connection to all these people is here somewhere--I don't believe much in coincidence. Have you been to Tustin to the LDS library? Sure you have and they have the Quaker records. But you probably know that. :) Later DJ DJ

>Who were Martin's parents and grandparents on the Crews side? Not sure. A Stanley, maybe? This Martin married Jane Ware JORDAN (d/o Reuben JORDAN) around Nov 1800 in Oglethorpe Co, GA. He'd been married previously to a daughter of Miles JENNINGS, and had one son, Stanley, by that marriage. I'm looking for the first name of this JENNINGS girl (b., d. & m. dates would be nice, too!). The CREWS line isn't mine.. I'm just trying to make heads or tails of this JENNINGS family. Any ideas? Crewsers, This is the story as it looks so far. David Crews (son of John Crews and Sarah Osborne Gatley) (1712-?) m.1 Mary Stanley (1715-?) in Hanover Co. VA. Their children are: 1. Elizabeth Crews 2. John Crews 3. Stanley Crews (1740-1793) 4. David Milton Crews 5. Mary "Polly" Crews David Crews m.2 Mary Ladd Magee in 1754. no children that I know of. Stanley Crews (1740-1793) m. ? to Agatha/Agnes. Their children: 1. John Crews 2. Susannah Crews 3. Polly Crews 4. Patsy Crews 5. James Crews 6. Nancy Crews 7. David Crews 8. Frances (Fanny) Crews 9. Elizabeth (Betsy) Crews 10. Martin Crews (1764?-1827?) Martin Crews (1764?-1827?) m.1 ? to Susannah Jennings (the source for this is evidently an Oglethorpe County, GA estate record of Miles Jennings). There was one child born to this couple about 1796 who was named Stanley Crews. Martin Crews m.2 on Nov. 11, 1800 to Jane Ware (Ginny) Jordan (daughter of Reuben Jordan and Ann Howard). Their children: 1. Reuben Jordan Crews (1804-1854) 2. James Ware Crews 3. Martin Mortimer Crews 4. Elizabeth Crews 5. John Fleming Crews I am, of course, open to corrections. Thanks to all those people who helped with the pieces of this puzzle. We still need dates and spouses for lots of these people but it is coming together slowly. Hope this helps. Hi Crews friends, Re: the Martin Crews who married Jane Ware Jordan in Oglethorpe Co, GA... does anyone know the name of his first wife (daughter of Miles Jennings)? Was this wife the mother of his son Stanley? Thanks for any help. Jeanne Arguelles ejarguelles@msn.com

I've seen much Kentucky activity lately. Just wanted to remind those in need that KY has one of the most complete tax records for each county from about 1798. These can be ordered through LDS - gives pole tax, # of horses, # acres, what water course, original patent info, and later - # of children of school age, # of cattle, etc. The poll tax may indicate a birth year: year - 21 = approx. date of birth - or when someone entered the county, left, or died. This is a must for anyone searching this territory. Bob Jordan jorbob@webtv.net

As an aside, our Douglass family traces back to John (Bruce) DOUGLASS m. Judith MOORMAN.(1731) Since there were also Moorman/Crews connections, that is what started all this. There are WELLS and CREWS marriages into the OGAN family from MO and later in CA, so there must be connections. I'd like to find those connections so maybe you all can help me out. First this info I pulled from Family Tree Maker: William Templeton Berry was born ca 1776 in Madison Co., KY. On 29 Feb 1804 (Madison Co., KY) he married Rhoda Crews, born March 1780 in Bedford Co., VA, dtr. of David Crews and Annie Magee. She was previously married to William Moorman, 17 May 1792 in Madison Co., KY. William and Rhoda Berry came to what is now Boone Co., MO in 1812. Wm. died in 1845, Rhoda died bef. 1850 census. William and Rhoda had two children, David Crews Berry and Eleanor McGuire Berry. In Histories and Genealogies there are Dawson marriages to Maupin and Thompson marriages to Dabney. In 1850 Missouri census James Crews, born in VA, age 77, was living with Jacob and Frances Smith. I don't know the connections here, I'm grasping at straws hoping for some later clarification. Here are my connections: Ann Ogan (b. 1809 Madison Co., KY, d. 1842 Linn Co., MO), dtr of John Ogan and Polly Douglass, m. Aug 1833 in Boone Co., MO, Dawson Thompson Crews (1812 - 1890, ID). He married (2) Margaret Ann Yates. Their child was Leonides Elonsil Crews. My grandmother had an old clipping of Laura Crews, the actress (died in 1942), and said that she was related. Laura Crews was one of the witches in"The Wizard of Oz". I'd like to know the relationship. Parthena Catherine Ogan (1838, MO - 1875, CA) dtr of John Martin Ogan and Lucy Ann Harris, m. Dudley Wells (1829, MI - 1907, CA) 1856 in Milpitas, CA. They had twins, were married into the Stockton family of CA. Does this Wells family tie in? Ransome Perry Ogan (1844, Linn Co., MO - 1916, L.A., CA), son of Irvin Ogan and Rebecca Jones, married 1879 in Linn Co., MO, Sarah Jane Wells (b. 1860, Linn Co., MO, d. 1926, Riverside Co., CA). Who were her parents? There is one more Wells/ Ogan marriage in CA later, son of Madison W. Ogan. Maybe some of you can help me sort these out. Thanks, Chet --------------17C6BDDF23E30A83AA09480B--
I too believe that this is as much about history as anything else....... I remember Memorial Day in the City of Cumming a few years back, a little frail lady being helped to walk and untie the flag in dedication to her son, only 19, who died in Viet Nam. To see her and the tears on her face after so many years....I became "undone". I also think of my father, a WWII Navy veteran, and how blessed I am that he survived Normandy. This is sent in honor of all who fought and lived, and in deep sympathy and regret for those who died defending all they loved and all they didn't even know................BMW FWD: I received this from one of my other (less active) lists, I debated with my self if I should pass it on to this list. Then I decided that I was going to. If I offend anyone, I apologize in advance. My thoughts are that it is out responsibility to ensure that history is not forgotten or ignored. That this does pertain to our nations history and our families as well. timothy hoskins I received this and was asked to forward it on. I think this is something that we should all care about. We owe it to the thousands who have served our country, suffered and died. The attached message is about an episode in our country's history . Our children are already studying the time and this war in school. Lest anyone say this does not belong on a genealogy and history list -- I tell you now that I disagree. I think we should stand up for those who stood up for us. Please read on. Margy Subject: Fw: Dear Jane! Date: Sat, 9 Oct 1999 14:35:18 -0500 I am forwarding this as I served during WW2, Korea & Vietnam as a non-combatant but as a patriot. Tokyo Rose went to prison for her part in WW2 and about all she did was provide entertainment for the troops, at least that was the way most saw it, but this one did worse and will never be charged. PLEASE read this through. GORDON -----Original Message----- Sent: Wednesday, October 06, 1999 1:55 PM Subject: Dear Jane! Looks like Hanoi Jane may be honored as one of the "100 Women of the Century". JANE FONDA remembered? Unfortunately many have forgotten and still countless others have never known how Ms. Fonda betrayed not only the idea of our "country" but the men who served and sacrificed during Vietnam. There are few things I have strong visceral reactions to, but Jane Fonda's participation in what I believe to be blatant treason, is one of them. Part of my conviction comes from exposure to those who suffered her attentions. The first part of this is from an F-4E pilot. The pilot's name is Jerry Driscoll, a River Rat. In 1978, the Commandant of the USAF Survival School was a former POW in Ho Lo Prison-the "Hanoi Hilton". Dragged from a stinking cesspit of a cell, cleaned, fed, and dressed in clean PJs, he was ordered to describe for a visiting American "Peace Activist" the "lenient and humane treatment" he'd received. He spat at Ms. Fonda, was clubbed, and dragged away. During the subsequent beating, he fell forward upon the camp Commandant's feet, accidentally pulling the man's shoe off-which sent that officer berserk. In '78, the AF Col still suffered from double vision (which permanently ended his flying days) from the Vietnamese Col's frenzied application of wooden baton. From 1983-85, Col Larry Carrigan was the 347FW/DO (F-4Es). He' spent 6 years in the "Hilton", the first three of which he was "missing in action". His wife lived on faith that he was still alive. His group, too, got the cleaned/fed/clothed routine in preparation for a "peace delegation" visit. They, however, had time and devised a plan to get word to the world that they still survived. Each man secreted a tiny piece of paper, with his SSN on it, in the palm of his hand. When paraded before Ms. Fonda and a cameraman, she walked the line, shaking each man's hand and asking little encouraging snippets like: "Aren't you sorry you bombed babies?" and "Are you grateful for the humane treatment from your benevolent captors?" Believing this HAD to be an act, they each palmed her their sliver of paper. She took them all without missing a beat. At the end of the line and once the camera stopped rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs, she turned to the officer in charge...and handed him the little pile. Three men died from the subsequent beatings. Col Carrigan was almost number four. For years after their release, a group of determined former POWs Including Col Carrigan, tried to bring Ms. Fonda and others up on charges of treason. I don't know that they used it, but the charge of "Negligent Homicide due to Depraved Indifference" would also seem appropriate. Her obvious "granting of aid and comfort to the enemy", alone, should've been sufficient for the treason count. However, to date, Jane Fonda has never been formally charged with anything and continues to enjoy the privileged life of the rich and famous. I, personally, think that this is shame on us, the American Citizenry. Part of our shortfall is ignorance: most don't know such actions ever took place. Thought you might appreciate the knowledge. Most of you've probably already seen this by now... only addition I might add to these sentiments is to remember the satisfaction of relieving myself into the urinal at some airbase or another where "zaps" of Hanoi Jane's face had been applied. To whom it may concern: I was a civilian economic development advisor in Viet Nam, and was captured by the North Vietnamese communists in South Viet Nam in1968, and held for over 5 years. I spent 27 months in solitary confinement, one year in a cage in Cambodia, and one year in a "black box" in Hanoi. My North Vietnamese captors deliberately poisoned and murdered a femal missionary, a nurse in a leprosarium in Ban me Thuot, SouthVietnam, whom I buried in the jungle near the Cambodian border. At one time, I was weighing approximately 90 lbs. (My normal weight is 170 lbs.) We were Jane Fonda's "war criminals." When Jane Fonda was in Hanoi, I was asked by the camp communist political officer if I would be willing to meet with Jane Fonda. I said yes, for I would like to tell her about the real treatment we POWs were receiving, which was far different from the treatment purported by the North Vietnamese, and parroted by Jane Fonda, as "humane and lenient." Because of this, I spent three days on a rocky floor on my knees with outstretched arms with a piece of steel placed on my hands, and beaten with a bamboo cane every time my arms dipped. I had the opportunity to meet with Jane Fonda for a couple of hours after I was released. I asked her if she would be willing to debate me on TV. She did not answer me, her husband, Tom Hayden, answered for her. She was mind controlled by her husband. This does not exemplify someone who should be honored as "100 Years of Great Women." After I was released, I was asked what I thought of Jane Fonda and the anti-war movement. I said that I held Joan Baez's husband in very high regard, for he thought the war was wrong, burned his draft card and went to prison in protest. If the other anti-war protesters took this same route, it would have brought our judicial system to a halt and ended the war much earlier, and there wouldn't be as many on that somber black granite wall called the Vietnam Memorial. This is democracy. This is the American way. Jane Fonda, on the other hand, chose to be a traitor, and went to Hanoi, wore their uniform, propagandized for the communists, and urged American soldiers to desert. As we were being tortured, and some of the POWs murdered, she called us liars. After her heros-the North Vietnamese communists-took over South Vietnam, they systematically murdered 80,000 South Vietnamese political prisoners. May their souls rest on her head forever. Shame! Shame! ( History is a heavy sword in the hands of those who refuse to forget it. Think of this the next time you see Ms. Fonda-Turner at a Braves game). Please take the time to read and forward to as many people as you possibly can. It will eventually end up on her computer and she needs to know that "we will never forget". Lest we forget... "100 years of great women" Jane Fonda should never be considered.
Thanks for posting this. It's about time someone got their back up over what happened. Thought I was all by myself. DJ
