    3. Pat, This isn't my direct line and I do not have any further information on it. The information you see comes from either "Metes & Bounds II" by Donna Porter, or the extensive information that Darrell Miller provided recently in the Crews mailing list. I am copying your question both to Darrell and Crews-L mailing list to see if anyone can help you further. Everyone, please read question below. Thanks. 3. Thanks David for forwarding the message from CGAutry. It is a bit disappointing that Reuben and Elizabeth's dates weren't there but I kind of suspected that they might not be after reading through the notes on the web page. We do have new information out of this though - and that is Sarah's birth and death dates. My previous info on Sarah was that she was born about 1846 and died age 14. Hazel noted that she does not have dates for any of these people. Let me fix that. 3. Hello Everyone, I just got a reply from the webmaster of the Linwood Cemetery page explaining about the Crews grave in the cemetery. CGAutry wrote: David, I must apologize to you as the information in the Linwood Index must have mislead you. Rueben J., Elizabeth T. and Sarah E. are listed in the index but only Sarah E. Crews appears to be buried in Linwood. The index lists names of those buried there but also the names of anyone named either on the headstone or in an obituary. In this case, Rueben and Elizabeth are named on the headstone of Sarah. Sarah E. Crews d/o Reuben J. & Elizabeth T. Dec. 20, 1845 July 29, 1861 She is buried in a rather large plot with a number of people in the Moffett and Flournoy family. Again, I am sorry that I could not provide you with information on the other relatives. Regards, CGAutry Hazel said both of Sarah's parents died in 1854 when she was nine years old, so she may be related to or may have been adopted by the families Flournoy and Moffett. David

    3. Here is a better link to that map. Click on GA and find the Columbus map. There is a road on the upper left which leaves the city at an angle. The cemetery is on a hill just to the right of that road. http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/pmhtml/panmap.html

    3. Charlie, This 1886 map shows the Linwood Cemetery("cemetery" written on the hillside) overlooking Columbus. The view is from the Alabama side of the Chattahoochee River. Phenix City is actually much higher in elevation than Columbus and you can actually look down on Columbus from it's heights and see a view like this one. Many residents of Columbus would spend summer months in Phenix City to escape mosquitos and the heat of the lower valley. Perspective map of Columbus, Ga., county seat [of Muscogee Cou]nty, 188[6]. H. Wellge. Beck & Pauli Lith. Co. http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/map_item.pl There are probably a lot of records in the Columbus Courthouse with Reuben's signature or of his activities as a lawyer. We know from that ad in the Milledgeville paper that he advertised in about 10 counties and lived in Ellerslie. I also saw his name more than once in the Columbus Enquirer Newpaper listing those that had mail waiting for them at the Columbus Post Office. I think that was in the 1830's and 40's. There's been no word yet on the dates. David News story: http://www.athensnewspapers.com/1997/112697/1126.a2cemetery.html

    3. Hazel, yes we are talking about the same family here (in my opinion at least). I have often seen Elizabeth's middle initial (Y.) interpreted as a T on different documents. In any event if there are dates and other information on the gravestone (if there is in fact a gravestone) should verify whether we have the same person. Charlie Ottosen On Tue, 9 Nov 1999, Hazel D. 3. Charlie, I found the e-mail address of the cemetery office in the guestbook and have requested the dates and any other info they have on the Crews graves. I grew up in Phenix City, AL and have passed this cemetery hundreds of times. It's starting to show it's age now but the size and ornate beauty of the gravestones in that cemetery always command the attention of those passing by. You mentioned that Reuben's father-in-law was named Phillips and lived near Ellerslie, GA. Here's a map for a Phillips Cemetery just south of Ellerslie. http://mapping.usgs.gov:8888/gnis/owa/GetDetail?tab=Y&id=320457 Aerial photo of area: http://terraserver.microsoft.com/TerraServerV3/image.asp?S=10&T=1&X=3568&Y=18019&Z=16&W=2 I will forward anything I get on Reuben Crews. 3. Thank you David for this great news. I just checked out the site and it looks like this is the burial site for Reuben J. Crews and his wife Elizabeth and their daughter Sarah. Several researchers in our line have been looking for these graves for years. If there is anyone who lives close enough to check out the gravestones I would very much appreciate it (I live in Saskatchewan otherwise I would go!) We do not have exact dates of death for any of these individuals. Reuben and his wife Elizabeth seem to have died very close in time to each other and I've often wondered whether they were killed in some natural disaster or died of some epidemic at the time. At any rate the gravestones should at least give us precise death dates.
