I think that is probably what happened. Have you seen Gideon's or James' pension papers? Does James' file actually say he married Lucinda HOOD? I'm trying to verify that he did, as well as the fact that Lucinda's brother was Aaron HOOD of Knox Co. TN. Vickie Elam White

    2. Hi, Vickie, Thank you for the information on Gideon Cruse. Knox County was organized in 1792 from Greene & Hawkins Counties. Possibly Gideon's land was located in the area that became Knox Co.? Is there any further records of Gideon in Greene Co after 1792? I have just started my research on the VA cruse families. One Cruse researcher with whom I communicated indicated the military applications indicated that Gideon had lived in NC for a time. That may relate to the fact that NC claimed the area that became TN in 1796. I need to visit the Federal Archives so that I can check the copy of the application. I would appreciate any thoughts you have. Here is the information I have on the TN Cruse, Crews, Cruze families: CRUSE, CRUZE, CRUISE, CREWS Family Records 1840 White Co. There was an older Gideon > Cruze (Crews) in Amherst Co., VA. (1762, d. a.1798). Gideon CRUSE bought land in Greene Co. TN in 1796. The deed says he was "formerly of Buckingham Co. VA" and makes no mention of NC. The last thing I've been able to find on either James or Gideon in VA was the 1782 tax list for Wreck Island Creek, Buckingham Co. VA area (now in western Appomattox Co.). Did they really live in NC before coming to TN? There was a Gideon CREWS in NC about the time James and Gideon moved to TN, a different person. I'm trying to find out information on Lucinda HOOD, wife of James CREWS. She is said to have been a sister of Aaron HOOD Sr. who died in Knox Co. TN, and that does seem to be the case. These CREWS and HOODs do associate quite closely together, and two of Aaron's sons - Aaron Jr. and Luke -- can be found in IN in the 1830s. James CREWS' son Ellison was there, too. There was also a Charles HOOD in Knox Co. TN at this time, who later moved to the same area of IN. Was he another brother? I appreciate any input. Vickie Elam White

    2. Hi, Mary, This is what I have in my family papers on this family. I don"t see either Mary (mine) or Anna in your letter. Where have we gotten mixed up? Pat also known as Duchee, Dutch. Family history says Phoebe was full blood Cherokee Indian. Born and died before 1800 east of the Mississippi River on the Cherokee Reservation. (Friends Collection at Hege Library Guilford College NC) Doochee was either her father's name or an associated clan. name was researched with a Cherokee linguists to no avail by Kevin Cosand Patton. A famous Cherokee chief of the 1800's had a similar name derived from the word for German immigrants referred to as "Deutsch". This has been posted by T. Hooter on the Hubbard Forum page (genforum.com) see print in Hardy Crews & Phoebe Doochees
