Hi, don't no if this will help, but I have seem on the 1850 census for Marion Co. KY, Gideon Crews age 62 born in VA Elizabeth Crews age 67 born in VA Richard Crews age 28 born in VA All these were in the same household. I was looking at a different set of Crews at the time, but I took these names down because you never know when you might find out who is related to who. I beleive I found the census on the Marion Co. site on Rootsweb. Hope this helps. David Hughes Got a hobby to share or just want a personal home page ? Hello Hazel, I've been working seriously on my family history for about 2 years and my husband's (of whom the Crews and Whickers are ancestors of) for about a year. I am hooked! It is tremendously fun! So, I am probably pretty "green" compared to many on these lists! Thanks again for everyone's input and assistance! Dan, I re-read your post and indeed I didn't take it as you meant it. Sorry. It has been a long while since I have worked these files but have gone back and taken a look. So easy to get confused when there are so many people with the same names many living within the same time frame. Anyway, let me try and lay out what I have regarding Sara and John. John, son of Joseph CREW and Massey JOHNS(T)ON, b. 1727/28 md. 1st Sara CREWS dau. of Andrew CREWS. (John MAY have md. 2nd Ann M. Royster; unproven.) As of Oct. 1995 I have been unable to determine who the mother of this Sara CREWS was, nor consequently the parents of her father, Andrew. The marriage of John and Sara is shown as Feb. 1755. Now I have another Sara CREW b. 16 Dec. 1728, d/o Andrew I. CREW and Hannah ELLYSON. Before 1 March 1755 she md. Thomas STANLEY, b. 9 Feb. 1731, s/o Thomas STANLEY b. 1689 & Elizabeth CREW b. 1704. (Elizabeth was the dau. of John CREW & Sarah GATLEY.) Would these Sara's be one and the same person who md. abt. Feb./March 1755; John, s/o Joseph & Massey and again, Thomas STANLEY? Which one came first? What about the Royster marriage? I can't get a handle on this, much less any proof. Do you have further clues? Remember, we are not to confuse these Sara's with the Sarah who md. John, s/o Thomas WHICKER & Massey CREWS. Kay, if you are really new at all this, you've no idea what a tangled web it all becomes.....but FUN!! Hazel
Hazel, It's good to hear from you as well! You mentioned that Gideon (son of Joseph and Massie) had an older brother named John. I show this as well. When I said Gideon was the "oldest", I meant that he was the "oldest" of the four brothers who moved from VA to NC. To my knowledge, John never left VA, although I don't know that for sure. Actually, I know very little about this John. You mentioned that he married Sarah, his first cousin and d/o his uncle Andrew. However, I show this Sarah marrying Thomas Stanley III (who ironically was also her first cousin). Do you have her marriage to Thomas Stanley III as well? Dan
Hi Dan, Nice to hear from you again! In reading your message to Kay, I note you mention James & Amelia's oldest son to be Gideon who md. Jemima WHICKER. I show the oldest son to be John born (just prior to Gideon) about 1727/28 and died abt. 1814/1816. John md. first Sarah CREWS, dau. of Andrew CREWS which made John and Sarah first cousins. John MAY have md. 2nd Ann Mourning Roster however his second marriage has not been proven. Best regards, Hazel hknight@jobe.net

I am looking for information on Massey Crews, mar. Thomas Whicker 1786 Granville, North Carolina. Thank you, Kay Philpot KPhilpot@netzero.ne I have Massey Crews (b.c. 1769 VA - d. aft.1818 Stokes Co. NC) m. 1786 Granv. Co. Thomas Whicker, son of Benj. Whicker (Wicker) Jr. She was da. of James Crews (c.1745-1831) and Emelia (?). James Crews was son of Joseph Crews and Massy Johnson of Hanover and New Kent Cos. VA. Bob Jordan jorbob@webtv.net
Joseph and Massey Johnson's son John, b. 1729 seems like a good candidate for my John who d. in Wake Co., NC 1799. I seem to recall that someone on the list had info on this John but I have lost it. I can't seem to get beyond him and need any kind of info. DJ
Kay, I do not know the answer to your question for certain, but here is a reasonable guess. Massey MAY have been the daughter of James Crew and Amelia <Unknown>, and granddaughter of Joseph Crew and Massie (Massey) Johnson. (Massie Johnson was supposedly a descendant of Lord Anthony Ashley-Cooper. Joseph Crew was a son of John Crew and Sarah Gatley of Charles City County, VA). James was one of at least four brothers who moved to NC from VA. Two of the brothers, Gideon and Caleb, died in Granville Co., NC. The oldest brother Gideon married a Jemima Whicker. Gideon and Jemima are my ancestors. The youngest brother, Thomas died in Stokes Co., NC. I am not sure where James died, but several of his children were born or died in Stokes County, NC. From information that others have provided me, I show that James had a daughter named Massie who died in Stokes County. I have no information on who she married, but she would have been approximately 17 years old on the date you show for the marriage. This sounds like she is a good candidate to me. Below is an UNOFFICIAL descendant chart. I hope it helps! If you have information on the descendants of Massey Crews and Thomas Whicker, would you mind posting this information to the list? Thanks. Donna: Is there any chance that this David who moved to the Boonesborough area had a son Thomas CRUSE/CREWS, who married Rachel E. BARNHILL (b. 15 Oct 1805; dau. of James BARNHILL and Hannah BOONE) before 1820 in what is now Oldham Co, Kentucky? Thomas Lee
I am still trying to find the parents of Albert Cruse/Crews. He married Roxanne BOWEN in 1888 Georgia, then married a Mary abt 1904 Georgia or Alabama, married a Carrie in Alabama, then married Olive Tennessee Waites in about 1925 in Alabama. I have been unable to locate him after 1930 in Birmingham, Al. If anyone connects, please let me know. In the city directory, he uses both Cruse and Crews. Thanks, Glenda Hamaker
I have a John Crews who d. 1799 Wake Co., NC, who surely must have come from Va. between 1790 and 1799 as he is not in NC 1790 census. His wife was Naomi possibly Minor. We've tried to connect him to various Crews folk in Va. with no success, only speculation. If this fits in anywhere with any Crews family, we're stuck and need help. The only clue I've run across was a newspaper article of 1794 saying his son, "of Sussex" had deserted the Va. militia. DJ
Looking for parents of Martin & Richard Cruse/Crews. Martin b.1807 KY, Richard b. abt.1812 KY. Patrick, I have a David (Milton?) Crews who settled in this same area of Bedford Co VA. Were on waters of Elk Crk, small tributary to the Roanoak River near Johnson's Mt. David and first wife Annie Magee had a dau born in Bedford Co in 1767. In the later 1770s David bought and sold several pieces of property along Elk Crk before moving to KY, the Boonesborough area. This David was the son of David Crews and Mary Stanley. It has been rumored he had a brother named John Crews but that has never been positively proven last I heard. David and bro John entered into a lawsuit in KY in later years over land. Someone else out there may can shed more light on subject as my research in this area is several years old. I have Littleberry Crews b. @ 1776 in VA marrying Rachel Davidson (b. @1788) on July 14, 1800. I have their children as William B., Elizabeth S., Susannah Jane, Keziah, Francis P., Alfred Hunter. Francis P. married Joel Spires. I believe Joel to be the brother of Elijah Spires. William B. married Frances Mullins. Their daughter Rachel Frances b. 4 Aug 1850 married Augustus Ryder Spires s/o Elijah Spires. Rachel and Augustus are my gggrandparents. I have other info on Spires and Crews. Judy
