    3. -- [ From: Patricia Ray * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Gray, Thank you so much for all the data! It's wonderful and most of it new . One question..... Sally Evelyn Matthews m. Crosby Everette Crews, s/o George W. Crews & Elizabeth Smith. Do you know who George W. Crews's parents were? I have George W. b. 1873 d. 1929 s/o Joseph Crews b. 1843 Stokes Co, NC, d . 1918 Stokes Co; m. 1868 Forsyth Co, NC to Lavina F. Wilson. I have no other data on George - wife, etc. Could this be the same George W. Crews as yours? ...................................... Bob The Crews men you have poll taxes listed for are bugging me. There was a John & Jane Crews in Va who had a son, Thomas b. 1755 who m. Susannah (?). Among their children were a David (with son David), a James, a Wm. a Thomas, a Joseph, a Hiram & an Enoch. No Ashley or Reubin linked to this family and I have no record of them in NC, just Va & KY & MO. But that doesn't mean they weren't there. There was an Ashley b. 1779 s/o Thomas & Mary Crews of Stokes Co, NC There were 10 children in the family but "Thomas", a brother, is the only name that matches. I don't know which Reubin this might have been. I was hoping to link all those names into one family. Oh, well. ...................................... Harold & Hazel, Your notes are a little worrisome. I'm going to go to the Listowners group on RootsWeb and see what they have to say about it. There may not be a problem, but we should know if there is. I'll be back. ......................................

    3. -- [ From: Patricia Ray * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Lori, And there's another name we run across over & over - MAGEE. There's no doubt your John Wilson CREWS ran in the same circles as all the others! That's another family we need lots more info on since there were several links between all these groups. There was a Samuel MAGEE b. after 1706 m. Elizabeth ELLIOTT and had 5 children. The oldest was Sarah MAGEE b. c1730. She's too old to be your Sarah, but it shows a possible line. We have 2 other Sarah MAGEEs but they had other husbands and I didn't see dates for them. I could check further if your Sarah was m. more than once. Does the name Pleasant STANLEY or Thomas LIPSCOMB sound familiar? Those were the husbands of the other Sarahs. The BROWNING family is also linked to CREWS at least twice, in the southern branch which descends from John CREWS & Nancy COLLINS. A. W. BROWNING m. Arsula CREWS (b. 1854 d. FL) and Effie BROWNING m. Arthur CREWS (b. 1886 d. FL). This line came thru SC & GA. I have no idea if there is a connection, but you might want to keeps those names handy just in case. .............................................. Frank, The people you are seeking should be easy to get info on as they are in this century.Or did you mean to type "1842" instead of "1942"? Is James L. CREWS still alove - you gave no d/d. If not why not try to get his death cert? You have to write to the county where he died and give you relationship, of course. Where was that? The certificate will give you his parents and where he was born. That will give you much more to go on. And I have a question and I don't mean to be impertinant, but why do you attach a copy of your note to the original? It seems to me that's just more clicks that you don't have to do. And it takes up more space. Just wondering. .............................................. Hazel, I'm starting to read back through the notes that were posted while I was offline and I ran across one from you back on 4 Nov giving your final conclusions on your Thomas CREWS's. You asked me if I have any record of Gideon CREWS b. 1730 Hanover Co, Va having any wife other then Jamima WHICKER. The answer if "No". No record of any other wives. Now a question for you. I have their son, Wm. Littleberry CREWS with wife and desc's, but I have no desc's listed for any of his siblings. Do you have any? ............................................... Joanne B. 3. Just discovered this list; didn't know it had finally been started. If there's anyone out there who could forward previous posts to me, or if they've been archived give me instructions for accessing the archives, I'd sure appreciate it. Always looking for descendants of Peter CREWS, d. 1801 Halifax Co VA, or his son Andrew CREWS m, Ritter BRADLEY, d. about 1830 in Wayne Co, IL, or their OWEN/MONROE/MARTIN cousins.

    2. Hazel D. Knight
    3. Pat, I have seen so many many listowners plead to their subscribers NOT to send attachments to the list. They can scramble the receiver's files. To send an attachment to an individual is o.k. apparently but not to a list. At least I've never had any problem with an attachment from an individual but am leery of attachments to a list. (People still send them even though the listowner continually asks they do not do that.) Will that be the case with our list? Hazel

    3. Hello Pat, A word of caution from an AOL member on the Digest Version of the letter. I am on a number of Surname Letters and have had to unsubscribe the Digest form and return to the Letter form. It seems when receiving the Digest, all letters are listed at the heading but when you start scanning down to read each letter, there is only 2, 3, or possibly 4 attached and the others are nowhere to be found. That may be just a problem for AOL, but did want to throw it out for discussion before we went too far. Harold Sanders

    1. Stokes Co., NC Tax list - Crews
    2. Robert Jordan
    3. The NC Archives has a very good original of these tax records - spent a couple of days going through these. Before 1801, the age for paying a poll tax was age 21 - no upper limit. The NC tax law required tax on land - either owned or rented (as long as someone paid the tax). I have found many cases of someone paying tax on property that was not theirs. In 1801, the poll tax age was 21-50 for white males. In 1817, the poll tax age changed to 21-45. Below is what I copied for the Crews families in Stokes. 1790: David Crews Sr. - 350a, 1 poll David Crews Jr. - 1 poll 1791: David Crews - 300a - 1 poll 1792: David Crew - 300a - 1; Thomas Crew 101a - 1 1793: David Crew - 300a - 1; Thomas Crew - 100a -1 1794: David Crew - 300a - 1; Thomas Crew - 100a -1 1795: Hyram Crews -1; David Crews - 300a-1; Thomas Crews - 100a -1. 1796: David Crews - 200a -1, Thomas Crews - 100-1. 1797: David Crews -200a -0, Thomas Crews - 100a-1. 1798: David Crews - 200a -0; Thomas Crews 100a -1. 1799: David Crews - 200a-0; Reuben Crews - 58a-1; Thomas Crews - 100a -1; Thomas Crews Sr. - 200a-1-1 Negro. 1800: Thomas Crews - 200 -2 -1Negro; David Crews Sr. - 200a -0; Thomas Crews - 75a-1. 1801: David Crew - 1; Thomas Crew Jr. - 75a -1; James Crew Sr. - 150a-1; Thomas Crew Sr. - 200a-0-1; Ashley Crew -1. 1802: Reuben Crews - 98a-1; David Crews - 100a-1; Thomas Crews - 200-0, Thomas Crews - 95-1; David Crews - 200a-0; Thomas Crews Sr. - 200a -0-1. 1803: William Crews? - 1; David Crews - 200-0; Joseph Crews - 100a -1; Thomas Crews Sr. - 200a -0-1; James Crews Sr. - 150-1; Reuben Crews - 100a-1; Thomas Crews - 100-1 1804: David Crews Jr. - 1800a -1, Joseph Crews - 100a -1; David Crews Sr. - 200-0; Thomas Crews Sr. - 302a -0-1; Ashley Crews - 48a -1; Thomas Crews Jr. - 93a -1; James Crews Jr. 150a-1; Reuben Crews 100a-1. 2. Hazel D. Knight
    3. Chuck, The reason you are confused with the Wicker chart is that there have been revisions in the Wicker English portion of the lineage since we talked quite a long time ago as new documentation was found. The ANCESTRY chart sent the list was my direct line & I go through John Whicker the brother of Richard. Both sons of "old" Henry. Henry's issue are: Richard b. ca 1520, Robert b. ca 1525-30, Maryan, Margaret who md. Tristram Guppy, a daughter (name unknown) who md. John Fayton, another daughter (name unknown) who md. John Cranyn and John who died 9 June 1584 and who md. Agnes (maiden name unknown.) A DESC. chart would have given you Richard as well as the other children of Henry. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help further. Hazel

    2. MRS PATRICIA A RAY
    3. -- [ From: Patricia Ray * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Lori, My address book showed your address as [email protected] already. But I'm glad you're making sure it's right! With all the info that came through from David & Gray it will take me a loooong time to get it all compared. But I want to encourage you to submit all your information to the Mailing List for everyone to see as soon as you're ready. We'll get it added to the db as soon as we can. That will put us in a better position to make links as new info comes along. What I would like is your Crews line as far as it goes. I would like all the desc's eventually, but for now just the Crews's, unless you CAN send them all? And the Lewis line is one that intermarries with Crews over & over. I even have some of them in Franklin Co, MO in the early 1800s that are connected to my Crews & Emmons. It's a fascinating family and I would love to get what you know of her line, too. They seem to be related to everyone! .......................................... Brenda, SO! "..seems someone needs to do better on their source information!" huh? (pout, pout!) I think I've just found the person to rely on to lead these discussions. And I'll try to get caught up, in the meantime, ok? I've got about 10,000 or more people to enter in the db. (sob!) Joanne has only caught me on a fauxpaux once and that's a miracle! That's why I ask her to double-check me on some of this stuff because she's that far ahead! I'll double-check you and so will Joanne, I hope, at least after the first of the year. And I do think I'm on the same page as you, and I don't have any dates for the children of John Crews & Nancy Collins. I also don't have any grandchildren for them. I wish I knew more, esp about Robert and David. I can tell you that Robert & David were sued over some pigs in the 1820s and told the court they were going to MO. Robert supposedly m. in MO, but no further info. David supposedly m. (1) Fannie Summers and (2) Lucinda Milton. This info was from an anonymous researcher whose data was sent to us after she died. But there were no references for that. If you hadn't heard about that then you prob hadn't heard about the children of John Crews who we think is a brother of David Milton Crews. That's from the same source. If you don't have it, let me know. .......................................... BTW, I wasn't able to find ancestors for some of you newer people, but Joanne may be able to, so don't despair, yet. Give her some time and we'll see what she says. .......................................... David, you never cease to amaze me with all the data you have collected. Yes, there are far too many Thomas's floating around. I think Hazel has been trying to put get them straight for quite awhile. What do you have? BTW, do you know there was a battle in the Civil War called The Battle of Crews Farm? It was named by the South and was in Va a few miles below Jamestown, but I don't know which Crews owned the farm. Do you? .......................................... We have 17 people on this mailing list now. I hope we'll have all the rest soon! They are archiving our notes so those of you who think you might have missed anything can go back & get the old notes. But wait until I check out where you go to do that. I have to go back to the Guildlines page and look for the search features available. I'll let you know soon. Pat
