I found following in Stokes records - sent out before, but sending now to rest of list. Stokes Co. Deed Book 12-401: "This is to certify that I did sell my brother-in-law Thomas Crews a Negro girl by name of Elizabeth for value received about the year 1779." This record was dated Nov. 7, 1799 and signed by Reuben Talley. It was placed in the Stokes Deed Book June, 1839 in order to prove ownership for estate purposes. Thus, Reuben Talley was the brother of Mary (Polly) Crews who married Thomas Crews ca.1769 in Granville Co. Of course, I am now searching for their Talley parents - have had a lead saying Nicholas Talley, but another person stated he could find no connection. Anyone with Talley connections? Bob

Gray, thanks for the reply re George W. Crews. I felt that it should be shared with everyone on the mailing list because others are compiling databases, too, and they will need the info. I think we can pencil your George W. Crews in as the same George W. Crews we already had in the database. (For Joanne B. that's number 18335. The place & time seem to be just right.) Gray, do you need the ancestors of George W.? He comes from the same line that Charles D. posted yesterday. George W., Joseph, Jonathan, William, David, William W., and John. (Sarah Gatley). If you want more details, let me know. I'll try to con someone into posting the rest of it. <G> Did George W. and Elizabeth Smith have any more children? Here is Grays' reply............ Smith b: Abt. 1938 m: 23 November 1969 Gray ......................................... Robert J. sent this expansion on Reuben Crews..... Reuben Crews first appeared in the Stokes list under Capt. Smith district (the tax keeper) 1802 with 98 acres. This is different district than other Crews men. In 1803, he appears in same tax list as the others. I found his name scattered thru the list up to 1843, where I stopped. Accordingly, Reuben Crews was probably born before 1803-21= 1782. He was not mentioned in Thomas Crews' will of 1830, so had to be (?) member of other Crews - possibly James or David. The two Ashley Crewses were members of Thomas' family. The 1820 census of Stokes lists Reuben on same page asDavid Crews, Thomas Crews, James Crews, Hiram or Harmon Crews, and William Crews. Reuben was age 45 and up (b. bef. 1775 ). In 1830, Reuben was listed as age 50-60 (b. 1870-80) on same page as John Crews (age 60-70). Thus, Reuben was probably born between 1770-75. Bob Thanks for the data, Bob. I'll be studying it, that's for sure. Pat

David 1 of 5 RUNNING PAF (or any other Program) FROM WINDOWS Many times I have wanted to look at PAF screens while using my word processor. This may be done within the Windows environment by following the steps outlined in the following pages. PAF must be running under Windows. If you are not running PAF from Windows, see the following section about setting up PAF so that it may be executed from Windows. SETTING UP AN ICON TO RUN PAF FROM WINDOWS There are a number of ways to set up an Icon to run PAF from Windows. Most of these will refer to PIFs (Program Information File). Here our interest is to get PAF up and running from Windows and we will do it in the simplest way possible. The results of these steps are easy to change later as you gain experience with Windows. These steps will be given here in a Step #1, Step #2, etc format for those who may not be fully conversant with the Windows program. It should be noted here that these steps are based on Microsoft's Windows 3.1 and may need adjusting if you are running Windows 3.0. Step #1: From Program Manager double click on the Program Group that you want your PAF Icon to reside in (or single click and then click Restore). The most logical place would be the "Applications" Program Group. Step #2: From Program Manager click on "File". Program Manager will be in the background with the Application Program Group Icons in the foreground so be careful to click on the "File" from Program Manager. Step #3: From the menu click on "New". Step #4: Window "New Program Object" will be displayed. The bullet (dot in circle) should be before "Program Item", If it is not, click on "Program Item" and the bullet will appear. Step #5: Click on "OK". Window "Program Item Properties" will appear. Step #6: The prompt line should be at the beginning of "Description". If not use the mouse to position the prompt at the beginning of "Description". Type the the name you want to show under the Icon - probably "PAF". If you are going to be using multiple data bases then an appropriate entry might be "PAF RESEARCH". Step #7: Use the mouse or Tab key to move the prompt to the beginning of "Command Line". The command to execute PAF. This will be C:\PAF\FR DATA if you have used the default locations when installing PAF. Note that this command will execute the Family Records program of PAF (the PAF Menu Screen will be skipped). If you have used another name for your data sub-directory substitute this name for "DATA". For example if you use a "RESEARCH" data base the line would be C:\PAF\FR RESEARCH. 2 of 5 SETTING UP AN ICON TO RUN PAF FROM WINDOWS (Cont) Step #8: Use the mouse or Tab key to move the prompt to the beginning of "Working Directory". This should be C:\PAF (assuming, again, that you are using PAF installation defaults). Step #9: Leave "Shortcut Key" blank. Click the mouse on OK. This will return you to the Program Group that you have installed the PAF Icon. Step #10: Double click on the new PAF Icon to test it. PAF should now be running. The default Icon (MS DOS) is deliberately used to adhere to the KISS principal. If you would like to change the Icon to one more suitable follow the steps in the section CHANGING YOUR PAF ICON. 3 of 5 RUNNING OTHER PROGRAMS WITH PAF IN THE WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT These steps will be given here in a Step #1, Step #2, etc format for those who may not be fully conversant with the Windows program. It should be noted here that these steps are based on Microsoft's Windows 3.1 and may need adjusting if you are running Windows 3.0. Step # 1: From Program Manager double click on the Program Group where you have the PAF Icon. In my Windows setup I carry PAF in the Program Group called "Applications". Double clicking on the Program Group Icon will cause all the Icons within the group to be displayed. Step # 2:Double click on the PAF Icon. If you have multiple PAF Icons (handling multiple data bases or options) select the one you wish to work with first. This will start PAF. PAF is now running as a single program under Windows: you can do anything in this PAF running under Windows that you can do while running under DOS. At this point I would suggest that you enter Pedigree Search and move to some other person than the one you have as RIN 1 so that you will know which program (Window) you are working with. This is particularly important if you are going to be executing two copies of the same program setup i.e. two versions of PAF using the same PAF data base (Icon). Step # 3: Hold down the Alternate key and press the space bar (Alt+Space). This will cause PAF to become a window (occupy only a portion of the screen) and also display a "box" containing, among other things, the line "Switch to...". Step #4: Click on the "Switch to .." line and select Program Manager from the Task List and click the "Switch to box". Step #5: Double click on the appropriate Icon for whatever other program you want to run concurrently with the first PAF program. This can be one for another PAF data base, Word Processing program, etc. It can be even be for the same PAF data base you used before (in which case you will be running two copies of the same data base). Step #6: Repeat Step #3 i.e. press Alt+Space and then click on "Switch to...". Step #7: From the "Task List" click on the first program you started and then click on the "Switch To" button. Step: #8: It may be necessary to arrange the Window for optimum viewing by clicking the mouse on the top bar of the window (where the program name is) and then, while holding down on the mouse, move the window where you want it. 4 of 5 RUNNING OTHER PROGRAMS WITH PAF IN THE WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT (Cont) Step #9: Activate the desired window by clicking in a clear area (i.e. one that would not be a PAF command). The bar at the top of the window with the program name will be colored (probably blue) to indicate the active window while the other bar will be clear (white). Step #10: At this point each program is working independently. In PAF people may be added, deleted, changed, etc just as if the program was running by itself under DOS. If the windows have been reduced, there will be a scroll bar on the right side of the screen. Use this scroll bar to shift the material in the window up/down or right/left as needed. To switch to a "full" screen rather than a "Window" press Alt+Enter. Alt+Space will switch back to a Window. Step #11: Close the programs as normally: i.e. for PAF press the "Zero" key until the backup reminder screen appears and then press <ENTER>. The main key combinations to remember are: Alt+Space Switch to Window Alt+Esc Switch to another program Alt+Enter Switch to "full" screen (opposit of Alt+Space) 5 of 5 CHANGING YOUR PAF ICON The following steps will permit you to change the Icon used with PAF (or any other program for that matter). If you have multiple PAF Icons in your Applications Program Group you may want to have a different Icon for each. There is no outstanding Icon in those furnished Windows but some are better than others. Most Bulletin Boards have files that contain Icons that specially design for PAF so as you gain experiance you may wish to download some and change your Icon again at a later date. These steps will be given here in a Step #1, Step #2, etc format for those who may not be fully conversant with the Windows program. It should be noted here that these steps are based on Microsoft's Windows 3.1 and may need adjusting if you are running Windows 3.0. Step #1: From Program Manager start your Applications Group (or whatever Group you have placed PAF). Step #2: Click on you PAF program Icon (single click). The text under your PAF Icon will now be reversed (i.e. you have selected it). Step #3: From Program Manager click on "File". Step #4: From the list of options select "Properties" by clicking on it. This will display the "Program Item Properties" window for PAF. Step #5: Click on "Change Icon..." to see what is available. The "Change Icon" window will be displayed. Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the Icons displayed to see what is available. See if you can find the Mona Lisa Icon which is one you may want to consider. Step #6: Once you have found the Icon you want to use click on the Icon to highlight it and then click OK. Step #7: The Program Item Properties screen is now displayed with the new Icon. Click on OK. Step #8: You are now back to the Program Group from which you can execute PAF. Prepared by: W Douglas Little 3 La Costa Court Ormond Beach, FL 32174 (904) 676-0551
To Charles D. I just check and you ARE subscribed. Didn't you get a welcome note when you did? You should get one with all the instructions you need to be a member of the list. Thanks so much for posting the John & Sarah line. What reference is being cited for the first wife of John CREW b. c1669, namely Catherine? I just don't see how John could have had a first wife and still have married Sarah GATLEY by 1669 when he was about 20. I realize it's not impossible, but I'd really like to know more about the facts of this marriage. When was it and where, do you know? To Hazel, Carol Boykin is not yet a member of the list. I guess she would be subscribing on her own. I'll go add her name to the list. I think she'll get a welcome note. Re: Wm. Littleberry Crews - yes, I have his children but no nieces & nephews. I have the names of his 9 brothers and sister. Could you post that when you have some time? And later generations if you have them? No hurry. To David H. I am using PAF 2.0 but something is going on with my computer and I have some old files that have replaced new ones. I think that's what's preventing me from getting on the internet except thru *P. The reason I can't print out Desc. Charts is because my nice new color printer turned out to be for Windows Only and won't print from DOS! Grrrr! I have imported the db into Family Origins and it seems to print fine since it's a Windows program, but since I'm going to have Windows 95 re- installed soon in order to have the latest files, I didn't see any reason to fool with F.O. until everything is working well. There's a lot to learn about any new program and I don't need things not working, too. I tried to do a gedcom once and for some reason it didn't work. I've manged to avoid it ever since, but I know I should master the technique and will, eventually. I was moving files onto my D drive to make way for that re- installation and ended up messing up my email program. So I had to d/l again and install that one more time. I'll never learn! BTW, check every file in the PEMC program before you move it. That is, if you have Prodigy Email Connection. Some of those files really belong there! To All, We have 27 members of the list including some new people that I hope will post their lines when they get the chance. 6 members are on the digest mode and it's working very well, so far. No notes being left out . I don't think we'll have a problem, but keep an eye on it, anyway. Pat

I don't recognize the parish names. Is this in America or England? David Family of Margaret Sherme Margaret Sherme was the first child of John Sherme and Thomasine Adams, and was baptised some time in August 1679, in the Parish of Kilkhampton. Unfortunately at this stage I am not certain on what date she was born/baptised. According to the I.G.I., Margaret married Symon Crews (or Cruse) in 1703 in the neighbouring Parish of Morwenstow. I have also discovered that Symon Crews was born around 1678, also in Morwenstow. Unfortunately there is no record of who his parents were. A subsequent search relvealed that they had 4 children, all shown as being born in Morwenstow. They were; John Crews - born 6th August 1708 Simon Crews - born 6th August 1713 Thomas Crews - born 25th March 1716 Nicholas Crews - born 10th April 1719 At this stage I have not been able to determine whether any of the above children married, whether they had children of their own, or what became of them. If anyone has anymore information about any of the above, or you feel you may be one of their descendants, please contact me at [email protected] Last Updated 6th November 1996 http://www.dcscomp.com.au/jewell/family-history/ancestor/864.htm
