    3. I know, not very original, but it's got "CREWS" in it. All day Sunday I tried to get on & d/l but Prodigy wouldn't answer the phone. That's an AWFUL feeling! So I opened up a Puzz 3D puzzle that I wanted to have going by Christmas so the kids could try it out, too. I was so curious to see how they worked. I like it! Now I'm having a hard time staying away from it! First of all, Hazel & Chuck, thanks for all the WICKER, TALLEY, CREWS data. I guess I don't have the latest decisions on this line, but that's what this list is all about. TO GET IT RIGHT! David H. We had John CREW and Marygery ELLYSON in the db, but everyone else you posted is new. Thanks so much! Donna, What a nice offer for someone, a copy of that picture! To All, I have searched the db for any RALPH/RELPH/RAFE/REPH people, but came up dry. Does that name ring a bell with anyone? David H. Re: CREWS-WICKER marriages I had all the ones you mentioned except 3 couples. Edward CREWS & Jane WHICKER and John CREW & Elizabeth MASSEY. Maybe Hazel can tie Edward in for me? We do have a John MASSEY & Elizabeth CREW but her name is Sarah Elizabeth C. CREWS and she was b. 1856 Patrick Co, Va. Much too late to be m. in 1837. I don't suppose that CD gives any indication as to parents, etc.? The info on the Battle of CREWS farm is so fascinating! That's much more than I knew! A couple of years ago I got a day by day description of the campaign of Gen. Sterling PRICE to take St. Louis, MO in 1865. Because of these descriptions I was able to pinpoint the exact date my GGGF was captured by Gen. PRICE's army. I already knew where and how and what happened later because of a family booklet written by an uncle, but we didn't know even what year it occurred. Now we know, Sep. 30, 1865. Anybody out there know who owned this CREWS farm? I haven't checked out your latest websites, yet, but I will. My time is getting tighter the closer it gets to Christmas. To ALL, The searchable archives are temporarily out of disk space. I don't know if this effects our list, but it may. They'll have more space by next month for sure. The URL for searching most lists is http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi- bil/listsearch.pl A few lists (ROOTS-L and some of the gatewayed lists) are accessed instead through http://searches.rootsweb.com Don't ask what gatewayed lists are. Instead, tell me. No, don't bother. We are ROOTS-L so maybe that mean us. They're hoping to get that split tidied up soon. Are you interested in threaded archives? Again, no clue! http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver Hazel, I had Caleb CREWS, s/o Joseph CREWS & Massey JOHNSON. Do you have any children for his son, Meredith? I guess I won't get to post any new data today. Time is getting tighter & tighter and I want to be sure to tell you all how much I appreciate all the help! Jimmie Cassidy - YES, we have Melchizedek and his ancestors & desc's! But we would love to compare notes & make sure you and we both have the same data. I have names & addresses for a couple of other desc's that aren't online that you can also talk to and I'm sure we have desc's of the same line, but not necessarily Melchizedek himself. (I love that name! There are no others like him!) Also John "Turkey" CREWS. Who gave him that nickname? You must know Jim Crews of MO? He uses the same nickname. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL! Let's pray for a happy, healthy and successful 1998! Find those clues! Pat

Am getting to know most of your names. That helps. Anyway.... RE Pat's query as how Talley WICKER & Betty Ann LINVILLE fit in....Talley WICKER born 20 Sept. 1783 (a yr. off from what you show) was the son of Thomas WHICKER and Sally TALLEY/TALLY. His wife Betty Ann LINVILLE was the dau. of David LINVILLE and Dorothy FAIR. Think I have discussed your other CREWS/WHICKER problems, haven't I? If not, ask again. Hazel

    1. Battle of Crew's Farm
    2. David Harris
    3. Pat, I took a look at "The Official Atlas of the Civil War" and found a "Battle of Malvern Hill, VA" which occured July 1, 1862. There is a farm marked Crew almost exactly where the battery is positioned. The farm was located at present day Glendale National Cemetery in Henrico Co, VA, about 20 miles SE of Richmond. On the 1863 map, a road named "Quaker or Willis Church Road"(VA Hwy 156) leads from the farm to a church of that name about 1 or 2 miles away. The church records may be a source of more info on this family. Malvern Hill Henrico County, Va. Malvern Hill was the last of the Seven Days’ Battles. It was fought on July 1, 1862. USA Gen. George Brinton McClellan’s men stood in formation to fire on the attacking Confederates. After this battle, McClellan withdrew to his base at Harrison’s Landing, down the James River. The park has interpretive facilities featuring exhibits and an audio station. There are no restrooms at this site, and the difficult terrain makes it unaccessible to the handicapped. http://www.insiders.com/civil/tour18.htm Henrico Glendale National Cemetery Jct of VA 156 and VA 600 The Battle of Malvern Hill was the last in the series of battles known collectively as "The Seven Days," a part of the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, which pitted George McClellan's Army of the Potomac against the Army of Northern Virginia and Robert E. Lee, its newly appointed commander. The aim of this campaign, the most ambitious ever mounted during the War Between the States, was nothing less than the capture of the Confederate capital city of Richmond. Fought on July 1 near the banks of the James River, within site of the spires of Richmond, this battle saw Confederate infantrymen attempt to take Union artillery emplacements, which held an almost unassailable position atop Malvern Hill. Although Federal troops were successful in beating back the Confederate charge, McClellan ordered a "change of base" (better known as a "retreat") immediately following the battle, and Richmond remained in Confederate hands until 1865. A poem: http://www.erols.com/kfraser/malvern.html A painting: http://www.greenpointart.com/civil/ds/dsmh.htm Memoirs of Lt. GEN. Hood CSA: http://www.wtj.com/arcdocs2/hood2.htm Description: Sixth and last of the Seven Days' Battles. On July 1, 1862, Gen. Robert E. Lee launched a series of disjointed assaults on the nearly impregnable Union position on Malvern Hill. The Confederates suffered more than 5,300 casualties without gaining an inch of ground. Estimated casualties were 8,500 total. Despite his victory, McClellan withdrew to entrench at Harrison's Landing on James River, where his army was protected by gunboats. This ended the Peninsula Campaign. When McClellan's army ceased to threaten Richmond, Lee sent Jackson to operate against Maj. Gen. John Pope's army along the Rapidan River, thus initiating the Northern Virginia Campaign. 3. Pat, After my other posts this a.m., will try again for you. Files should reflect: Thomas CREWS (b. 1748/53) md. Mary_____(Bob says last name was TALLEY & I do not know otherwise.) This Thomas CREWS was the s/o Joseph CREWS & Massey JOHNS(T)ON. They had 10 issue. Thomas CREWS (b.1766) s/o James & Amelia CREWS md. Mary WHICKER (b.1765), d/o Benjamin WHICKER & Elizabeth. James CREWS (b. 1745), s/o Joseph CREWS & Massie JOHNS(T)ON md. Amelia. Massie\Massey CREWS, (b.ca 1768) d/o James & Amelia CREWS md. Thomas WHICKER, s/o Benjamin WHICKER & Elizabeth. Don't yo see Pat, Joseph CREWS & Massey JOHNS(T)ON had among other issue, 2 sons; James & Thomas. Each of these sons had a dau. they named Massey. Massey JOHNS(T)ON must have been quite a gal for her sons to do that but from the research I did some years ago along with others, I truly believe that is what happened. That is why these families are so confusing. Hazel

    3. Pat, Bob and Chuck, This is in followup to my last message re. the TALLEY/WHICKER connection. It is just possible that Nicholas TALLEY & Mary were the parents of these (is it 3?) women. Anyway...I just now find I have a Martha TALLEY (showing parents Nicholas TALLEY & Mary) who married William WHICKER. William was born 1763 and was the son of Benjamin Whicker & Elizabeth (as was Thomas, b. 1760 who md. Sally TALLEY & then Massey CREWS). I show a Jane TALLEY who I understood from Bob was one of the wives of Thomas JORDAN. How are we doing now? Hazel P.S. Pat, you can rely on what I am giving you now more than what I may have given years ago. I can't recall if I ever got back to you after having straightened out all these Thomas CREWS and WHICKER families. I thought I had, but then maybe not. If not, I am sorry.

    3. Bob & Chuck, What a tangled web. Yes, I have a Talley connection. Let's go over this & see if it can be straightened out. I will give you what I have & then get back to me. O.K.? Mary "Polly" TALLEY married Thomas CREWS ca 1774/78 Granville Co., NC. Thomas born ca 1748/53. I show no parents for this Mary "Polly" TALLEY and only the other day got her last name as TALLEY from you Bob. I think we all pretty well agree on the children of this couple. Among them was Sally CREWS who md. George JORDAN. A son of George JORDAN named Thomas md. a Sarah TALLEY. (I got that couple from you also Bob so am showing no parents for this Sarah TALLEY.) I have a Sally TALLEY who married Thomas WHICKER 27 March 1780. I show her parents as Nicholas TALLEY and Mary___. This Thomas WHICKER born 1760 was the son of Benjamin WHICKER & Elizabeth. This Thomas WHICKER had a second wife named Massey CREWS. He married her 11 Oct. 1786. This Massey was born 1768/70 and was the dau. of James and Amelia CREWS. This Thomas WHICKER had issue from both wives. Bob, do you have documentation as to the last name of Mary "Polly" TALLEY who md. Thomas CREWS born 1748/53? It is difficult to believe Nicholas TALLEY & Mary were the parents of both these TALLEY women although it is quite possible. Give me the benefit of your thinking. Hazel

Here's a question that maybe you can answer. In the db I have Thomas CREWS (m. Mary WICKER) as s/o Joseph CREWS & Massie JOHNSON . And we show Thomas & Mary with a son named Thomas who m. Mary ZIMMERMAN. Now from what you and others are saying it looks like Thomas CREWS (m. Mary TALLEY) is s/o Joseph CREWS & Massie JOHNSON. So where does that leave Thomas CREWS & Mary WICKER? Do you know his parents? Or is this one man with two wives? They were each b. about the same year, 1753. One of Stokes Co, NC (Mary TALLEY) and one of Granville Co, NC (Mary WICKER). ..................................... Do any of you have more info on the TALLEY family? We have Henry TALLEY m. Sarah Ann "Sally" CLARK 1811 Bedford Co, VA We have a question as to whether 1791 is her birthdate or their marriage date. George was abt 26 in 1791 and certainly old enough to marry, but how old was Mary? Since she died in 1810 and it gives the date 1811 after Sarahs' name, I'll bet that Sarah & George were married one year after Mary died. And since both dates are expressed the same way, I'll bet that 1791 is the marriage date for Mary & George. Does anyone else know for sure? .....................................
