Hello, I am new to this list and seeking information on the John Crew, born c 1625, died 1660 in Accomac Co., VA. His wife Elizabeth (surname unknown) remarried a Robert Hignett, and by him had another 8 children. John Crew and Elizabeth had Anne Crew, b 1655; Elizabeth Crew, b 1657; and John Crew, b 1660 and died 1713 in Sussex County, Delaware. Any help with this John Crew and family will be greatly appreciated. Thankyou. Brian Walls Columbia, Maryland
Gray, I've gone back to finish checking the list you sent 26 Nov to Bob Jordan of desc's of Joseph CREWS & Massey JOHNSON. On their son, Gideon (m. Jemima WICKER) you have a list of 8 children for them: Mildred, Abigail, Gideon, Elizabeth, Joseph, James, Littleberry (we have Wm. Littleberry) and Jemima. We also have two more: Mary b. 1793 and Meredith b. 1795 m. Mary WADE. Is there any reason to NOT include these two on the list that you know of? One other little fact is the name of the wife of James. He married Sarah Jones Earl. You didn't have the "Jones" and thot you might like it. Pat
The post of D.S. Fawcett looks like the family we're searching for regarding "The Battle of Crew's Farm". On the Civil War map of 1864 there is a "Turkey Bridge" across Turkey Creek 1-2 miles south of the Crew Farm. I don't know if this is Turkey Island. There is a Ladd family living south of the bridge. Seems like there was a Ladd(Lead) marriage mentioned recently. The will of John Pleasants: http://www.msstate.edu/listarchives/afrigeneas/199705/msg00448.html
Pat, You asked about Edward CREWS who md. Jane WHICKER on 8 Nov. 1842, Stokes Co.,NC...Edward CREWS was born 1819, Stokes Co. & was the son of Harmon CREWS & Sarah COOK. Jane WHICKER was born 1821 and was the dau. of William WHICKER and Nancy HESTER. (This Wm. WHICKER was born 1790. There is another Wm. WHICKER who md. Martha TALLEY but that Wm. was born 1763.) Just to clarify matters. :-) You also asked about children of Meredith CREWS. Meredith md. twice & had children with both wives. 1st: Nancy Wade md. 16 Dec. 1815; ch.: Anna CREWS, William B. CREWS & Sallie P. CREWS. Md. 2nd Mary D. THOMASON on 21 Dec. 1829. Ch.: Caroline S. CREWS, Mary F. CREWS, James A. CREWS & Thomas Jefferson CREWS. HAPPY NEW YEAR ONE AND ALL!!

Hi All! I discovered something today which was new to me. You probably all already know this, but in case some don't..... I knew my CARPENTER line came from William the Carpenter of Melun, France. In desperation still trying to find my CRUISE line (no pun intended) I looked at a map of France. There in front of me was the county of Creuse and the Creuse River. Next I looked at the County Seats. See if any of these names seem familiar (remember to pronounce them with the French accent): Evry, Rodez, Caen, La Rochelle, Tulle, Gueret, Valence, Evreux, Quimper, Marson, Nancy, Vannes, Nevers, Clermont, Pau, Colmar, Macon, Rouen, Melun, La Roche-sur-Yon. It is not that I am stupid, I just forgot the connection to Europe and by looking at the map, it gives me new spellings to check. I also have Avery (Evry, Aveyron, Evreux ) and Powell (Pau ) and cousins named Rhodes (Rodez) and Garretts (Gueret) in my tree. Donna Donna --------- End forwarded message ----------
Crews researchers, I have a few questions that Im hoping someone can help answer: First: Is anyone familiar with a 'Gideon Crews' (d. abt 1798) who lived in Amherst County, VA on land where Sweet Briar College was built? (Sweet Briar House - where the President of the college lives - is said to be the old Crews home). This Gideon appears to have had a son named 'Joseph', and a grandson named 'Joseph Jr.'. I am trying to establish if he ties into the line of John Crew (b. in Devsonshire, ENG). Several of John Crews descendants have links to the Bedford/Amherst County area, and Johns grandson, Joseph, had a son named Gideon (b. 1730, d. 1815 I Granville Co. NC) who could have been a nephew and/or namesake of this Gideon. Second: Does anyone know of a link between the John Crew mentioned above and Capt. James Crewes, who lived on Turkey Island in Henrico County, VA, and who was executed for his role in Bacons Rebellion. Capt. James Crewes is said to have died childless, but had relatives in the area, including two brothers named Francis Crews and Edward Crews, a nephew named Matthew Crews, and a niece named Sarah Whittingham. It is interesting to note that John Crew had a friend named Thomas Pleasant whose son John maintained a fishing seine at Turkey Island. Finally: In nearby Charles City County, there was an overseer on Col. Charles Carters plantation named James Crews who was murdered in 1792. Does anyone know if a link exists between this individual and either John Crew or Capt. James Crews? It is interesting to note that the Carter family is mentioned frequently in the will of Capt. James Crewes. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Dan Fawcett [email protected]

To Gray Harmon, I have FINALLY gotten around to entering the data you sent me on Oct. 30th which contained the desc's of Jonathan C. CREWS & Matilda MASTEN. Thank you so much for it! I noticed that Bessie Roberta PETTICORD (Mary Louise, Jonathan C. Jr., Jonathan C. Sr.) m. Thomas Shadrack MORRIS. His father was Shadrack MORRIS and Thomas has a son named Shade MORRIS , which I assume is a nickname for Shadrack? On down the line is Haidee Love ELLIOTT (Cynthia Grace PETTICORD, Mary Louise CREWS, Jonathan Jr., Jonathan Sr.) who m. Shade MORRIS. His father was William Shade MORRIS. Do you know how these two MORRIS families tie together? Is Wm. Shade MORRIS a brother of Shadrack MORRIS? When I see such obvious loops, I just have to know more! Also I noticed that you didn't include the children of Martha CREWS and ____WATSON. Even though we don't know her husbands' first name, we do have her children, so if you need them, I'll be glad to post here. Maybe one of them is a junior. To Donna C, You asked for info on on the marriage of Edward CRUSE and Sally NELSON in TN 3/17/1813. I'm sorry to say I don't have them in the db, so don't know anything about them. Maybe one of the others will have something on them. We have the name NELSON in the db several times marrying CREWS , but none in TN. Although most of them have no states listed anyway. So, who knows? To David H, Thanks for the <http> on the Civil War. You seem to have a ton of them! One for every occasion? To Janice Craft, Re: your note of yesterday about Jesse CRAFT & Martha E. CREWS d/o Thomas. We had them in the database but with no children. We do have a notation that the children are cousins to Bethal COOPWOOD. We have Elfida m. to David COOPWOOD and (2) Robert CORLEY and we show her son, Bethel COOPWOOD and a note that he is cousin to children of Martha CREWS & Jesse CRAFT. We don't have any ancestors for Martha, Jesse, David, Robert or Elfida . I remember once that Joanne Black remarked that she thought we had every possible name, common and otherwise, for CREWS people, and then comes along ELFIDA! We show Elfida as b. in possible Smith Co, TN and lived in Lawrence Co , AL. Does that jive with what you have? That's about it for our data. I'm hoping you have more, or that you'll let us know when you find more . I'm going to show my ignorance now and ask you to tell me more about Bethel COOPWOOD. To Brenda W. I started to answer your question about Martha CREWS & Mary CREWS that you sent 12/26, but the whole thing feels like I've already answered you . But since I can't find a note to that effect, I'm going to just give you a quick arrow pointing to their links: Martha CREWS (Bruce TALLEY) d/o Richard "Chat", Prosser, John, John (Jane) Mary CREWS (Geo. STANLEY) Jesse, John, David, John (Sarah GATLEY) That's it for now, Pat
A random note about a travelling man: James Jah TUBB, born Abt. 1799 in Greenvile Co, S.C.; died April 20, 1856 in Perry Co Al; married Henson H. CREWS Abt. 1817 in Dickson Co, Tn.
NOTE: The information below is what I sent last night. But I failed to put some more important information in it. I failed to state that the Robert Corley who married 1st Sallie Crews 2nd Elfida Crews Coopwood was living in SMITH COUNTY, TENNESSEE in 1813. He married Sallie in 1814 I assume in Smith Co. and then Elfida in 1846 DeSoto Co, Miss. The THOMAS CREWS who sold land in Franklin Co, GA was living in Smythe Co, Tenn when he sold it in 1809 as there is a recorded power of attorney to James Smith of Franklin Co, Ga to transact the business. STANLEY belongs to Jesse (Amy BRIGHT) John (Jane), David (Mary STANLEY), John (Sarah GATLEY). I'm going to see if I can add "CREWS" to the subject line of our notes. Chuck says you can still add your own teaser to it, so let's see what happens. I don't have anything new to post at the moment so I'll just let the rest of you go at it! Pat
Our Jesse Craft b.1796 Tenn (Hickman Co or town of Hickman) married about 1820 probably Pike Co, Miss. MARTHA E. CREWS b. ca 1805 GA (according to 1850 census). Their children were cousins of famed Bethel Coopwood of Texas camels. Upon researching Bethel Coopwood I found his mother was ELFIDA CREWS b. 1803 Tenn. Elfida had a sister named SALLIE CREWS who married Robert Corley. When Sallie died 1846 Yorkville, Tenn. Robert Corley married Elfida Crews Coopwood. In the 1827 Pike Co, Miss. Tax List Jesse Craft is listed and just below his name if this entry: "Same for estate of Thomas Crews, Topisaw, 350 acres." Could this Thomas Crews have been from Smythe Co, Tenn and before then have been living in Franklin Co, Georgia before 1809? Any help would be more than appreciated! Pat, Thanks for the correction and the additional information. I enjoyed reading your summary of early VA. While looking at my wife's Crews line from SC, I had always disregarded any that I saw from VA as being a separate family. This might still be true. The only information I have that makes me think this, is a will of John Cruise that was administered by his wife Elizabeth in Charles Town, SC in 1704(Don't have a copy yet or know if it is available). At this early time, it's more likely that they arrived in Charleston, SC by ship from England than over land or by ship from VA. But, the migration of the VA Crews families into SC and GA has amazed me and certainly confused things a little. While doing my research, I also saw the "Battle of Malvern Hill" called "The Battle of Poindexter's Farm". Info on Mr. Ronald Mosocco's book you referenced is below. On the Civil war map of 1863 the Poindexter farm is on the east side of Hwy 156 where the cemetery is today and the Crew farm is on the west side of Hwy 156, both being at the northern foot of Malvern Hill and in Henrico Co,Va. I've just got to talk to A.D. Crews before going on to other things! A.D. I got such a kick from you note! Is that the impression we give? Do you get the feeling you're in a madhouse? Don't worry, we are losely organized, but we do manage to answer questions. We have at least 4 people and maybe more who are compiling databases (I think) and have LOTS of Crews information. If one doesn't answer, someone else may .. And we like to have fun with it all! We either have known each other for years, or are just getting to know some others. I personally feel that if you don't have a sense of humor about all this, you COULD go mad ! So we try to relax and enjoy! Especially this time of year. Would you like to ask a question? We'd be happy to try and answer, and we would love to hear all about your CREWS ancestors. Please feel free! To Chuck D. That's an interesting suggestion about putting "CREWS" into the subject line automatically. But I notice rootsweb lists the notes in the digest mode, at least, by using the subject line as a tease. What will happen to that if I do the automatic thing? Will people still be able to add things to the subject line? And do the rest of you want me to do that? Hazel, I'm so happy to get the new CREWS nephews and nieces of Littleberry CREWS! And to get Talley WICKER fitted in. Thank you! NOW, do any of the nieces and nephews have children? (hinting again) No hurry! Donna, Congratulations on your homepage! I'll take a look at it in awhile. Someday I hope to do something like that, but at this rate............ David, If you'll look at "1677-Arthur MILES......." again I think you'll see that Sarah WHITTINGHAM is d/o Edward CREWES of "London". Sarah was in Virginia at the time and was executor of her uncle's estate. Her uncle was Colonel James CREWS who was hanged for his activities in 1677 in the BACON Rebellion. Edward CREWES, brother of James, was still in London. James died w/o wife or issue. Much of his estate went to Giles CARTER who was his overseer and was possible married to Hannah CREWS. Lots of people believe that she was sister of James and Edward but some believe she was d/o John ROWIN. It's all still rather confused. Sarah WHITTINGHAM had a cousin, Matthew CREWS, s/o Francis CREWS, another brother of James & Edward. Sarah & Matthew made claim to the estate of Col. James, but none of the others. A Margaret CREWS witnessed the will of John ROWEN. Someplace I have the father of James, Edward and Francis - ok, here it is. Matthew CREWS of London, children Edward who d. bef 1677 and had dau. Sarah WHITTINGHAM, Francis and Col. James. This also attributed Hannah as d/o Matthew, but I don't know. Wonder who Margaret was? In any case, all these CREWS were indeed early settlers except for the ones who never came here. James is the only one I know for sure was here, and Sarah, and Margaret. What do we have as proof any of the others came? Yes, William CREWES is an early settler and I don't understand why we can't find out more about him? Did he marry? Where is his family? We also have these: JOHN CREW -arr 1642 - Accomack Co - Edmond SCARBURGH, sponsor THOMAS CREW -arr 1652 - Northampton Co - John BROWN, sponsor ANNE CREW -arr 1652 - Lancaster Co - Anthoney DONEY & E. HAWES JOHN CREW -arr 1694 - Accomakc Co - E. SCARBURGH ROGER CREW -arr 1638 - Charles City Co - Jos. BOARNE REBECCA CREW -arr 1635 - Jos. JOHNSON "Early Va. Immigrants, 1623-1652", Pg. 82 RANDALL CREW m. Dorothy BEHEATHLAND d/o Robert. Randal CREW was a Quaker (from the CREWS and the IRVIN Families by Irvin Burkett Crews 1966). He represented the Co of Warrick in 1642. His name is listed among members of the House of Burgesses and the Governor's Council as late as 1649-50. "Calendar of Transcripts", Virginia State Library: a letter, dated the 28th day of April 1625, from King James I to Sir Thomas CREWS directing that the petition of the Virginia Company should not be considered. (Domestic Correspondence, James I, Vol. 163, No. 15, pg.222) "The Journal of the House of Burgess of Virginia, 1610-1658-1659, Vol ?9 , gives the names of members of the convention of 1625, and in that list is the name of JOHN CREWS. Pages 43/44 give a petition drawn up and signed by members and his name appears there. Most, if not all, the CREWS families in America are of extremely ancient lineage and trace descent from the ancient Cheshire, Devonshire and Northampton lines respectively. Among the first of the name in America are: RANDAL CREW, who came over in the Charles in 1621, ROBERT came on the Marmaduke in 1623, JOSHUA came in 1623, JOSEPH came on the Marchmont in 1624, MARIE came on the Faulson in 1635, REBECCA came in 1635, ROGER came in 1638 (1635?) to Charles City Co., JOHN in 1642, JOHN in 1649, ROBERT in 1681, ANNE in 1652, and THOMAS in 1652. None of these early immigrants, however left any definite records concerning their immediate families or descendants." Posted by Barbara Petty and she went on to say, "They may not have been coming for the first time in some instances. The headright system was in effect and 50 acres was granted for each person whose way was paid by either themselves or someone else during that period. There was no school in Va, until 80 years after settlement when Wm. and Mary was estb. so many of the children were sent to England or New England for their education." Court Records 7 Jul 1675 THOMAS CREWS 6 Mar 1677 THOMAS CREWS 2 Jul 1690 THOMAS CREWS 1661/2 JAMES CRUSE (VA Colonial Abstracts) Charles City Co Another post by Barb Petty "His (John CREW) wife was Sarah GATLEY, dau of Nicholas GATLEY and his wife Sarah. This is proved by Charles City Co. Court Orders where John and Sarah CREW were trying to get her inheritance of her father Nicholas deceased in 1689 from her mother Sarah who had twice remarried after Nicholas's death, first to John SMITH, and secondly to Wm. MORRIS. John and Sarah were under age in 1689 and came of age about 1690 so both born about 1669 or thereabouts." She speculated that John CREW was possibly the s/o Andrew CREW who died in VA and Joseph RENSHAW was his administrator." I don't think she was ever able to prove this because I'm sure she would have told us if she had. But that's another early CREWS name to add to the list. "Complete Book of Emmigrants, p. 158" Letter dated 22 Mar 1670 from the King to Gov. of Va. Richard MOMPESSON, s/o John MOMPESSON of Tidworth, Wiltshire, was "Inveigled" on board the "Elizabeth", Mr. Richard HOBBS, in 1667 and taken to Va where he was delivered with John CREW and Mary COUSENS to Wm . DRUMMOND near James Town, as the consignee of John CURRER in London. Richard MOMPESSON who had assumed the name of Richard DAVIS is to be delivered to Col WILLIS for disposal." I ran across the name Wm. DRUMMOND in connection with BACON's Rebellion as a participant. Interesting. This is most of the early (1600s) data that we have been given. It's been nearly impossible to find anything more on most of these CREWS immigrants, but I hope something will turn up eventually. David, I just ran across my notes of the Battle of Crews Farm. Ronald Mosocco gave me the following: "Page 73 of my book reflects the following: July 1, 1862 The Battle of Malvern Hill, or Crews's, or Poindexter's Farm, VA (day 7 of the Seven Days' Battle), with Major General George Brinton McClellan, USA, inflicting severe casualities on Gen. Robert Edward Lee's charging Confederates, and General Lee retreating. Lee will repeat the same mistake a year later, at Gettysburg, PA. Lee does end the immediate Federal threat on Richmond, VA as the 7 Days' Battle produced approximately 36,000 total Confederate and Union casualities." Now if we could only pinpoint who owned CREWS's Farm! Have a wonderful day tomorrow, or today? Pat

This is a quote from a black woman named Lenora Molly Crews Morris, b.1909 of Stokes Co., NC. I seem to remember seeing a couple of Crewses on the net listed in a black cemetery. David "One of my grandfathers was a slave who belonged to Levie Crews of MS and that is where our family name come from."
From:"VA Genealogy Along and Near the Lower Rappahannock River 1607-1799" 1677-Arthur Miles, scrivener aged 53, and Giles Sussex, both of London, made deposition that Sarah Whittingham was the only surviving daughter of Edward Crewes of London 26/27 Sep 1677. From:"Accomack Co.,VA Court Order Abstracts1671-1673 Upper Northampton Court[Accomack Co.]16 Sep 1672-Certificate was granted to Mr. Thomas Leatherberry for 700 acres for transporting: William Crewes and a list of others(total of 14 persons) This establishes these two men as original immigrants but not necessarily the heads of their American lines as their fathers could have come here before them. The shipmasters that transported people to America were given 50 acres per person, thus 14 persons yielded 700 acres. They seemed to follow the letter of the law and not the spirit since one Robert Watson accumulated 400 acres for transporting himself 8 times.
