    1. [CREWS-L] One more thing!
    2. MRS PATRICIA A RAY
    3. Looks like I sent this to the wrong address. It should have been in the works yesterday. Oops! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Brian, It's good to hear from you. It sounds like you know more about this John CREW than I do. I do know that many people think this John CREW is the father of the John CREW who married Sarah GATLEY, but he died before the younger John CREW was born. I do know that Anne CREW m. c1670 Phillip ADAMS; Elizabeth CREW m. c1672 John KING of Mormusce, John CREW may have married Sarah OSBORNE but there were so many John CREWs around that time that it's hard to pin down which John she married. AND I've been told that John & Elizabeth also had a son named Robert CREW who m. Mary CRISPE 18 Oct 1703 Charles City Co, VA. Her mother was Mary HOWARD and they were m. at the house of James HOWARD. They are mentioned on pg. 166 of The Quaker Genealogy. They had a poss. dau., Elizabeth who m. Thomas ELLYSON in 1729 at the Friends Meeting House, New Kent Co, Va. Thomas b. c1674 d. c1761 s/o Gerrard ELLYSON & Anne MYHILL on pg. 164. If you can verify any of this, or refute it, I'd be glad to hear about it. We could use some help here. And I'd really like to hear about those children that Elizabeth & Robert HIGNETT had. I have no knowledge of them and would love to get their names, etc And can you help with references on these early CREWs? I keep wondering where people are finding the information such as b/d on first John CREW, etc. I'd sure appreciate it. ........................ Virginia, Re you note of yesterday, I've been unable to pinpoint Willis Norman CREWS in the database. Do you have any idea when he was born and where? There are several Willis's but there's just not enough information to sort out which one might be yours, if any. Maybe someone else has him and I'm sure they'll jump in here if they do. ........................ Donna, Your discovery of French Creuse(?) is interesting. I believe there were a couple of people who claimed their family were huegonauts(sp?), but most of them can trace their family back to England, I think. If it's spelled KRUSE they come from Germany. CRUZ is the Spanish spelling . I don't think they're the same lines that we research with one exception. There was a KRUSE family that went to PA and one son went to Madison Co, KY and changed the spelling to CREWS. Desc's of that line will probably end up in Germany, if they can figure out who they are. Talk about confusion! All I can say is if you think it will help, go for it! We could use the information, too, if they end up being one of these lines. ........................ Dan, You certainly have a much better map than I do to be able to pinpoint Turkey Island like that. You ask a lot of questions but I've been unable to figure out which line is John, Joseph, Joseph Jr & Gideon. Those are all such familiar names. I don't know of a link between John CREW and Capt. James CREWES of Turkey Island. Do you know what reference is used to show that Francis & Edward CREWs were living in America? I know their father was in London and my impression is that Edward was already dead when James was hanged and Francis was still in England, but I could be wrong. I hadn't heard of a James CREW that was an overseer on Col. Charles CARTER's plantation and would like to hear more about his murder. Giles CARTER was an overseer on the plantation of Col. James CREWES. Someday we hope to find out if Giles CARTER was m. to a sister of Col. James, either as his first wife or his second. This all shows a link between the CARTERs and the CREWES/CREWS. That's about the best I can do. I'm hoping someone else will comment on this, and I'm hoping you'll be able to give us some references to look at on these people? I'm throwing this in here just for fun because it won't help anyone, but it will show the surprises that can crop up in this hobby. Giles CARTER has a desc. Mary CARTER that married a Ralph HUDSPETH. One of their desc's knew my ggf Robert CREWS in MO during the Civil War and actually saved his life. It's a very long story that I won't go into, but the Hudspeths, or Headspeths were supposed to be relatives of the first wife of my gggf Julius Emmons, father in law to Robert. We haven't proved that part of the story, but I keep my eyes open for clues! Later, Pat

    3. I'm not sure if this information has been posted before (my apologies if is has): Those of you interested in the ancestry of Massie Johnston (who married Joseph Crew in VA) should check out the following web sites: http://sml.simplenet.com/smlawson/massie.htm http://sml.simplenet.com/smlawson/ashley.htm These sites sketch out the probable link of Massie Johnston back to Lord Anthony Ashley Cooper, First Earl of Shaftsbury. Shaftsbury was a Lord Proprietor of the Colonies, a confidant of King Charles II, and a close friend of the political philosopher John Locke. The Ashley and Cooper rivers of Charlestown bear his name. Additional information on this family can be found in the books: "Massey Families in America" and "My Massie family in England" by Frank A. Massey. These books can be ordered on microfiche through your local LDS Family History Center . Hope this information helps!

    3. Hi All: I'm very sorry to be late to join this discussion. Littleberry Crews is my 3GGF and I want to cast my vote on the side of "no William as a first name." I have done significant research on him using microfilm of the original records, wills, deeds, marriage bonds, etc. I found him referred to as Littleberry, Littlebury, Little Berry, Barry, and even L. B. But I never found an original document with the first name of William. If anyone can reference one, I will apologize to the group. Secondly, none of the other children of Gideon and Jemima Crews were given a middle name. Lastly, I believe the first time that "William" was used as a first name was a series of family group sheets prepared by Shirley Ann (Murphy) Manos of Weatherford, Texas in 1977 and 1978. These sheets included some of those Crews descendents who migrated to Texas. The sheets have been published in several places. The family of Thomas Anderson Crews was one of those that migrated to Texas. This family included Thomas Anderson Crews' eldest son, William Littleberry Crews. William Littleberry Crews was born in 1856, not quite one year after his grandfather, Littleberry Crews died. It is clear that William Littleberry Crews was named after his grandfather. But I believe that someone erroneously assumed that the grandfather he was named after had all three names. For all of these reasons, I believe Littleberry's full name was Littleberry Crews. Thanks for listening, Thomas Randolph Crews (Randy)

DAR files, Deed and Will books other Crews as well as Wicker researchers; all show it as Wm. Littleberry. Mary WADE, or at least her last name, is a common factor. Could Mary WADE & Nancy WADE be the same person? The Thomas Bell book has only the 8 children listed. OK, I found it. 2. David Harris
    3. Can anyone help Dan Fawcett with his first query and this additional information? David ********************************* David, I'm not sure how this all fits together, but he's some additional info: Turkey Island is directly south of the Glendale National Cemetary (about 5 miles), and about a mile south of Route 156. Glendale National Cemetary is bounded on the east by Turkey Island Creek, which joins with Crewes Channel (further south) to feed the James River at Turkey Island. This is the area where Capt. James Crewes lived, and where John Pleasants (son of Thomas Pleasants) maintained a fishing seine. Regarding the name 'Lead', it is also mentioned in the will of Thomas Pleasants. The book "Colonial Wills of Henrico Co., VA, Part Two (1737-1781)" states: "Will of Thomas Pleasants .... I also appont my living friends: my brother John Pleasants and his son Robert my nephew John Crew (it is hard to tell whether he means Robert or John Crew as his nephew), James Lead, Robert Ellyson, David Johnson, Henry Terrel, David Terrel, and John Cheadle, as trustees of my will.... Dated 19 Nov. 1743". Hope this information helps. Dan Fawcett [email protected]
