    1. [CREWS-L] Prospective Crews
    2. GrayHarmon
    3. Hi, I received a message from a Crews person and could not help her; suggested she join our little group. Anyway, here is her message (anyone out there able to help?): From: Virgi2726 (Virginia Crews) I am looking for Willis Norman Crews. This is my great grandfather...I know he lived in Georgia at some point in his life...and I am almost positive he was born there...He was married twice...his first wife would be my great grandmother, but I don't know her name...they had 2 children...Norman Frederick Crews(1919-1986?) and Helen Crews(?-1996)...Willis married again, his second wife's name was Myrtice Simms-Crews. Myrtice and Willis left GA during my grandfather's childhood, Helen and Norman were raised by Willis' sister, Willie Crews...(Feb. 13, 1888) Willie died in LaGrange GA in 1969. Norman Crews married Catherine Bryan and they had two children:Norman Frederick Crews JR(july 21, 1946) and Dennis Bryan Crews(after 1946-1974). Norman Frederick Crews married Patricia Jones and they had two children:Norman Frederick Crews III(feb. 7, 1972) and Virginia Leigh Crews(November 7, 1974). Helen married a Lorma Stewart and they had 5 children . After his death she remarried a Bailey Wilson. Unfortunatly that is the extent of my knowledge...if I could find anything on either Willie or Willis then I could go somewhere with my search, but the only thing i have found was Willie Crews on the social security index...it seems like willis did not even exist...even more so since no one on that side of my family kept any records. So I don't even know when he was born or for that matter where...my whole family is from GA though so I would think that he would be too...enough of of my long windedness...any help would be great!!!!! Even some sites to look for or places to write to would be nice...I just don't know where to go. Thanks Virginia Crews Gray Harmon

    3. To Gray, I checked for Charles Anderson CREWS and the other names you mentioned but found nothing. These names are a little recent and we don't have that much of this century in the DB. I'd like to tie them in , too, but it doesn't look likely for now. To A. Tippett, I didn't have any better luck with your Ethelred CREWS. In fact, I didn't have the name "Ethelred" in the DB at all, so you've added a new CREWS name and I didn't think that was possible! Didn't have that 1805 lottery list that David had. I hope Davids clue of Washington Co, GA will help you a lot. David, Thanks for the "discussion" address. It is a little different from what I had so I'll check it out. Pat

    1. [CREWS-L] Still more on James Crewes and James Crews
    2. DSFawcett
    3. Pat, The address that I sent you (to the James Crewes discussion) should be correct, except you should make sure you don't include the period after ".htm". Sorry if this confused you. Another item regarding this site: The web page text in one place references the wrong volumn of the "Genealogies of VA Families, Wm. & Mary Quarterly" (and I messed it up even more). The correct volumn is IV. However, I wouldn't make a special trip to the library for it. I checked it out this past weekend, and it really doesn't say much more than the web page covers. Finally, in regards to James Crews, the overseer who was murdered on Charles Carter's plantation in 1792, I have (perhaps) another related item. According to the Quaker Henrico Monthly Meeting notes, a James Crews was "disowned" in 1788 for "overseeing slaves & non-attendance". This would be in the right area at the right time, and at least provides some circumstantial evidence that this James was related to the Quakers many of us tie back to. I have also decided (perhaps it was obvious to others) that the plantation he was shot on was probably the well-known "Shirley Plantation", and that the owner, Charles Carter, was the father-in-law of Light-Horse Harry Lee and grandfather of Robert E. Lee. Does anyone know if there were other Charles Carters (owning plantations) in the area at this time? Shirley Plantation, it seems, is directly across the James River from Turkey Island (home of James Crewes), and a few miles from the properties of various Ladds, Pleasants, and Crews (including the Crews farm from Civil War fame). By the way, I now have "soft copy" of some of the court documents on this murder (courtesy of a scanner), but I didn't include this document because of it's length. If anyone would like a copy (text or Microsoft Word), send me a note and I'll send you an attachment. Dan Fawcett ([email protected])

    1. [CREWS-L] Invitation
    2. MRS PATRICIA A RAY
    3. We have had several new people subscribe to this list and I want to invite them to tell us who they are researching. We have a large database of CREWS & their relatives which might help us to help you. Or maybe you can help us by giving us new data that would expand the database. We have lots of people here anxious to share with you so don't be shy! We now have 38 members although we're having a little trouble with 3 of those addresses. They don't work! I was not aware a discussion was taking place on whether mail mgrs could charge a fee to members, but I've just received the results. Good news! The lists will remain free to members although some groups such as local historical societies can charge a fee for expenses. There are a couple of other exceptions, but it doesn't affect us. RootsWeb is having to expand their capacity as the volume of traffic since Christmas is challenging their ability to handle it all. All those new computers people got for Christmas? The following is part of a note I got on what is happening: "The most obvious problem is that the Web/FTP server is maxing the T1 pipe it uses, which has forced us to limit the number of FTP connections we accept during peak hours. Users wishing to access the USGenWeb Archives should use the Search Engine server, which is on our second T1 and still has available bandwidth. (I've installed a pointer to the search engine on the "too many users" FTP message.) "The second obvious problem is that the lists.rootsweb.com server is being overloaded, and we're experiencing latencies that are beyond the 1 -10 minute level that we routinely provide. "The third problem is that we've run out of disk space for use by Marc Nozell's mailing HTML list archiver and the search engine server that supports the mail archives and USGenWeb Archives. (That is, we've filled up more than 17 gigabytes on those servers!)" It sounds like they are on top of things and will fix it as quickly as possible. I don't know if this is what is causing the problems with the new member addresses. I rather doubt it. Hopefully those people will get in touch and correct any possible mistakes in their addresses. (I sent them notes myself and they came back. Later, Pat

    1. [CREWS-L] Dabney data
    2. MRS PATRICIA A RAY
    3. Joanne, I've got some info on the DABNEY family from Ancestry, Inc. Lots of stuff from the deed records, etc. I don't know if you need it or not. It says Cornelius who. m. Sarah Jennings was s/o George (no wife shown ), s/o Cornelius who was an immigrant from England. Lots of references. More children, or different ch. Says Frances Dabney m. John Maupin; Mary m. Christopher Harris; Eliz. m. Daniel Maupin - all ch/o Cornelius. Do you want any of this? Do you have the Terrell data entered? I have another Desc Chart that give the ancestors of Margaret Douglas MERIWETHER wife of Thomas Scattergood TERRELL (Jonathan, David, Wm. m. Susannah WATERS). It looks like her parents were Nicholas Hunter MERIWETHER and Rebecca TERRELL, d/o Richmond TERRELL. We have a Richmond TERRELL (Joel, Joel, Wm. & Susannah) but he has no dau. named Rebecca. This must be another Richmond. This one m. Nancy OVERTON. Oh, how weird! A dau of Rebecca TERRELL and Nicholas Hunter MERIWETHER, Nancy Terrell MERIWETHER, m. Nicholas Hunter LEWIS! Wonder if he was named for his father-in-law? He was s/o Thomas Walker LEWIS and Elizabeth MERIWETHER. Here's another desc. chart. William TERRELL (1656-1744) sp--Martha Mary TERRELL (1654- ) sp--Susanna Waters William TERRELL (1685-1755) David TERRELL [Sr.] (1686- ) Anna (Betty) TERRELL (1687-1734) sp--David LEWIS [Sr.] (1695-1779) William TERRELL (1718- ) sp--Sarah MARTIN (1721- ) Susannah LEWIS (1720-1778) sp--Alexander McKey (1718- ) sp--John William BLALOCK [Jr] (1710-1791) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beckner Millington BLALOCK (1757-1823) sp--Nancy Ann CLARK (1758- ) Charles BLAYLOCK (1780-1870) sp--Philadelphia KELLY (1785-1862) from Jerry Blaylock <[email protected]> He didn't have the last name of William Terrell listed. It should be William Terrell LEWIS s/o David LEWIS Sr. You sent me to a BATES homepage where I printed out a Desc. chart for John BATES & wife, Eliz. In the DB is a Benjamin BATES 17082 m. to Hannah ___? Do you think he is the same Benj. as on pg. 2 of the Desc. Chart, married to Hannah GREEN? He is 6th generation, s/o Fleming BATES & Sarah JORDAN, (John, John, George, John). Our Benj. is father of Benj. Jr. m. to Tace CREWS. Their child Tacy BATES m. Edw. PLEASANTS s/o Tarlton PLEASANTS & Talitha CREWS. ............................................... Someone sent me to msstate.edu where I got 3 of 4 parts on the Pleasants family. Part 1 wouldn't come through. I'm trying to work out a desc chart with the wills that came through. These people had NO imagination! Every family has the same names for their kids! I see that a John CREW was mentioned in the will of Thomas PLEASANTS in 1744 written 19 Nov 1743. And he is called "Nephew". We have a John S. CREWS b. bet 1680/1740 (when?) of Lunenberg Co. Va, (brother of Richard CREWS) who m. a Sarah PLEASANTS. We don't have her lineage, but there are plenty of Sarah PLEASANTS to go around in this family! She was supposed to be dau of a leader of the Quaker Church, but I haven't noticed that Richard & John CREW were members of the church. Someone thought that this John CREW married Sarah MONROE which makes me think these are two John CREWS who each m. a Sarah. The John who m. Sarah PLEASANTS prob. was a Quaker and the John who m. Sarah MONROE prob. wasn't. I'll keep working on abstracting these wills and deeds, etc. Pat

    1. [CREWS-L] Hello again
    2. MRS PATRICIA A RAY
    3. I'm back from our little mini-vacation and see that you all took a little time, too. I hope you all are having a good new year. It seems a little quiet around here so I assume you are either getting caught up on your database or have been talking to relatives for more info and have lots more data on your family. No? Me, neither. But I will! Get caught up, that is. I've pumped my family relentlessly and only have a few more questions in that regard. Soon. First of all, Dan - don't believe it when Hazel says that she "creeps" back into the CREWS line. She jumps back in feet first and there's nothing creepy about it! It's truly amazing! And do not apologize for anything you bring up. You haven't confused matters more. We can't be confused more than we are already! <G> We NEED to discuss Col. James CREWS and the CARTERs and all that stuff. And you've come up with references that we didn't have. That deserves a "thank you"! Besides, this stuff is so fascinating! I tried that internet address <www.cascade. net/~monalisa/gedcom/notes/carg3892.htm> and the program couldn't find it. Do I have it right? I'd very much like to see that discussion re Col. James & Hannah, etc. I have a desc. chart for Giles CARTER, but it doesn't pertain unless we find out his wife's true identity. In looking back at what I have on the subject I have run across a note from Mike Carter that looks like it is exactly what you were saying the discussion is about. He believes the CREWs and the CARTERs were related in England from some older information. From the English will of Daniel LLEWELLEN he thinks that James CREWS had been married to his daughter, Margaret LLEWELLEN. (Hence, Margaret CREWES) He believes that Giles CARTER was married to a dau. of John ROWEN since Giles was a beneficiary in ROWENs' will. Makes sense. And he thinks John ROWEN was a relative of Daniel LLEWELLEN. "James CREWES of Charles City VA was a merchant and the agent of Daniel LLEWELLEN and sometime after the death of John ROWEN, Giles CARTER was most likely the overseer for James CREWS. Giles and his family lived on James CREWS' Turkey Island Plantation on the James River. James CREWS seems to have a grudge against the Indians. It is possible that his wife and children (if he had any) were killed by Indians. In any event he encourages Nathaniel BACON to lead the planters on the frontier against the Indians...against the wishes of the governor of VA, Wm. BERKELEY. This leads to Bacons Rebellion in 1676 or so." I have a copy of the last will and testament of John ROWEN. Witnessed by Richard PARKER(?), Wm. FISHER and Margaret CREWS. dated 1 May 1662. So Margaret was alive just 4 years before James died. Will of James CREWES is dated 23 Jul 1676 and he mentions "...all my wordly estate, either here in Virginia in England or elsewhere..." He calls Giles CARTER "...my loving friend...". Others mentioned in the will are Mary CARTER, d/o Giles; Susan CARTER; Hannah CARTER wife to Giles; Theodrick CARTER s/o Hannah & Giles; Mathew CREWS "cozen" (cousin) The petition of Sarah WHITTINGHAM and Matthew CREWS mentions that it was filed in the Court at Varina 1 Dec 1680. Now I wonder where Varina was located. If it was in England, that would show that they both were living there. The two attorneys for Sarah and Matthew in 1680 appointed Wm. RANDOLPH of Henrico Co to be their attorney to handle the estate. That would mean to me that they were ALL living in England EXCEPT Wm. RANDOLPH. from Karen Wood: "I cannot buy the connection between Hanna and John ROWEN, who left Giles use of a house for a year, and a cow, but didn't mention Hannah. He predeceased CREWES by several years. After a year Giles' house went to ROWEN's brother, Henry. Again, that might just be English law and Hannah was just not named, but I would think that she would have been listed and perhaps given a bed etc." Here's something interesting. James' will mentions his "cozen" Matthew, and we know that his brother Francis had a son named Mathew which would make him James' nephew. That is two Matthews. And that explains why his niece and nephew had to petition for a part of the estate. I had the impression that nephew Mathew had part left to him but he wanted it all. I'm picturing his cousin Matthew living in VA with his own estate. He doesn't need James' plantation to live in so that is why James puts Giles & Hannah there. They are to manage it but some of the proceeds probably go to Matthew. And that is probably all old hat to most CARTER researchers. Oh, well. I feel that if Hannah had been a sister or other relative, then James CREWES would have left the estate to her and not just given her and Giles "use" of it. He wanted the plantation to stay in the family and if Hannah had been family, wouldn't he have just left it to her, or to her and Matthew both? Maybe Hannah was sister to Margaret making her his sister-in-law? She wouldn't have been a blood relative but close enough for some bequest. Hannahs' children would have been nieces & nephews to James, close enough to receive their bequests of 10,000 lbs of tobacco, etc. But Giles would have been his brother-in-law and I would think he would call him "brother" and the children "niece" instead of "dau. of Giles CARTER" I'm going in circles! That's more than enough of this subject for one day. And way too much speculation! .................................. Turning to other things. Joanne (Gus) I entered some Desc. Charts from the Ancestral File not too long ago, but I'm not sure I ever posted it on the BB. Please look at Armisby CREWS #197. I found that several of his gch didn't have their children entered in the db. These are all children of Fannie CREWS, his dau. Littleberry DIGGS - 6 children & several gch. Wm. 3. Hi to all, I have a recent obituary from the Winston-Salem, NC, Journal, to wit: Mrs. Florence Summers CREWS Miller, 96, died on 1 January 1998; was born 1 March 1901 in Salem, NC, to Charles Anderson CREWS and Emma Louise Hall CREWS. She lived all her life in W-S. She was married to Paul Felix Miller on 9 March 1924. She was a member of Home Moravian Church until she transferred her membership to Trinity Moravian Church before her marriage. She was preceded in death by her husband and one daughter, Elizabeth Louise Miller Daly, both in 1982; by three brothers, Charles, William and Hall CREWS; and one sister, Lillian CREWS Noell. She is survived by one son, Hall CREWS Miller and one daughter, Jean Miller Messick. Does anyone have any information on this family? I checked the Forsyth County Cemetery Book, Vol. 5, pg. 1096, Salem Moravian Cemetery, and found some of her family buried there, none of which I have in my database. Would be wonderful to tie Charles Anderson to someone! Any help will be appreciated. Ms. Gray Smith Harmon

    3. Dan, Yes, I think you have me fairly routed back from Mary WICKER & Thomas CREWS, s/o James & Amelia CREWS. So I will now try to show you a different route. Benjamin WHICKER, Sr. had Benjamin, Jr. (the James & Amelia line). Ben., Sr. also had Jemima WHICKER (sis to Benj., Jr.) who md. Gideon CREWS. It is through Gideon that I creep back into the line again. Gideon, husb. of Jemima, was the son of Joseph & Massey (Johns(ton) CREWS. They had Thomas CREWS & Mary TALLEY. Thomas & Mary TALLEY had Conny CREWS who md. Benjamin WHICKER. That Benjamin (a new Benjamin here) was the son of James R. WHICKER & his 1st wife, Mary DEAN. They had Eli WHICKER who had James Yancy WICKER who md. Hannah L. CREWS. They had John Wesley WICKER who md. Melissia CREWS. They had Charles F. WICKER who had ME. My mother was a "foreigner" to the CREWS/WICKER line. She was an ELLIOTT. It is through her line I also have an ancestor who was in the Bacon Rebellion. Think I explained this to Pat & Bren. 1. [CREWS-L] More on James Crewes (hung) and James Crews (shot)
    2. DSFawcett
    3. Pat, Your absolutely right - I mistakenly noted that Capt. James Crews of Turkey Island "had relatives in the area". Indeed, to the contrary, the Virginia Historical Magazine (V.4., 1896-1897, p. 123) states that his heirs lived in England. According to this magazine, on "April 1, 1681, there is an entry in the records of Henrico, stating that as Captain James Crews died unmarried, administration on his estate is granted to Mr. William Sherwood, attorney for Rowland Place, Esq., who was attorney for Matthew Crews, gent., son of Francis Crews, deceased, brother of Captain James Crews, deceased, and to Lieutenant- Colonel Thomas Grendon, attorney for Sarah Whittingham, sole daughter of Edward Crews, brother to Captain James Crews. These heirs lived in England." As you noted in a message to David Harris, niece Sarah Whittingham may have been in Virginia at the time, but I cant confirm or deny this. I would be interested to see what you have on this matter. In your message to David, you also questioned who "Margaret Crews" was. There is an interesting discussion on this in the website: http://www.cascade.net/~monalisa/gedcom/notes/carg3892.htm. The owner of this website speculates that Margaret Crews was the daughter of Daniel Llewellyn, and perhaps the deceased wife of Capt. James Crewes. This site also has a slightly different explanation for "Hannah (Crews)". You note that many "people believe that she was the sister of James and Edward, but some believe she was the d/o John Rowin". This website states that Hannah may have been the daughter of James Crewes (even though James Crewes niece and nephew prevailed in their challenge to the will, claiming James died without issue). The website also cites another theory that Hannah was the daughter of William T. Sewell. Finally, this website mentions that there is more about James Crewes and his possible wife in "Genealogies of VA Families, Wm. & Mary Quarterly, Vol. II, pp 216-218", and more discussion on the connections between the Carters and Crewes in Glocestershire in "Giles Carter of Virginia, pp 104-105". I havent seen either of these documents, but they may be interesting to look up. Finally, in regards to your question on where I got the information on the James Crew who was an overseer on the plantation of Col. James Carter - it came from a book entitled "Calendar of (Virginia) State Papers, Vol. 6, pub. 1886". On pages 159, and 188-190 it describes the trial in Charles City County of a slave named Jack who shot and killed a James Crews, "overseer for Col. (Charles) Carter", in 1792. Ive been trying to place this "James" - my best guess is that if he is related to the John Crew/Sarah Gatley family, he was the James born in 1750 (s/o John Crews and Sarah Crews) who married Ann Crew (d/o Ellyson Crew and Lydia Lead). If anyone has any information on this, please let me know. Thanks for your help. I hope that I havent confused matters more. Dan

    3. Hazel: After all the help you have given me over the years, it is you who is the master genealogist. And I would like to publicly thank you in this forum! Regarding James Crews (2 Jul 1785 - 28 Sep 1875), son of Gideon and Jemima, I have him recorded without a middle name. All of the Granville County, NC wills, deeds, etc. that I have seen show him just as James Crews. Also, I have personally seen his headstone at the Salem Methodist Church and it reads "James Crews." The confusion may result from James's second son, who was named James A. Crews (15 May 1813 - 10 Aug 1892). This James A. Crews (grandson of Gideon and Jemima) was also known as "Tar River Jimmie". There is a write up on him and a photograph of his farm in the following: Andrew J. Carlson and Marvin A. Brown, "Heritage and Homesteads, The History and Architecture of Granville County, North Carolina" (Oxford, North Carolina: The Granville Historical Society, Inc.) I hope this helps, Randy Crews

I feel somewhat bad about telling you about John Crew, in part because I have seen where many on this list count the John Crew, born 1 March 1660, as the John Crew who later married Sarah Gatley. I am afraid this is not possible. After John Crew of Accomac Co., VA died in 1660, his widow Elizabeth (I wish I had her name) married again, to a Robert Hignett. Elizabeth was seemingly intent on preserving some of John Crew estate for his three children and so made the following deposition (spelling as in document): "Know all yee whome theis may Concern tht I Elyzabeth Crew late wife of John Crew of Northampton Countie deceased doe out of the tender loue and Motherly Care of my said Children thatthe Lord hath given me by my Loving Husband John Crew who Leaving mee visible possessed of an estate, I doe therefore giue & make over unto my said Children being three in Number these things Fott:, vizt, six female Cattle with all their female Increase until they be of the age of foureteene years & then they are to have both male and females and alsoe three breeding Ewes with all their feemale Increase untill they be of the age of foureteene yeares as before mentioned these cattle and ewes to run a Joynt Stock amongst my said three Children untill they Come to foureteen yeare and then to be equally devided the first that attaines to the age aforemencioned is to have her equall part by pporcion & soe the other Likewise to have their part as aforemencioned & if one of my said Chilldren dye within those yeares before mencioned the the other two survyvers is to inioy the whole & if two should dye the third to inioye the whole & if all dye then the estate to fall to the giver againe and be at her disposing I doe alsoe give unto my sonne John Crewe one hundred and Fifty acres of land to be possessed thereof after my desease but iff my sonne dye in his Minoratie the my Daughter Anne is to be possessed with the abovesaid land: I doe alsoa giue my said sonne two Guns upon the tearmes before mentioned that if he should dye in minoratie they are alsoe to Fall to my two daughters I doe giue unto my Daughter Anne one Cheast after my deseace to enjoy it Theis things before mecioned I Elyzabeth Crew their Mother doe freely & absolutely giue unto my said Children their heires Executrs & admrs for ever peaceably & quietly to enjoy as their proper goods at the time before mentioned & for performance whereof I haue hereunto set my hand & seale this 25th day of April 1661. the Marke of Elyzabeth X Crew. Wit: Robert Hickeson [Hignett?], Henry Whyte. These Cattle I am if they increase & growe many itt is at my pleasure to Convert them to other use for the benefitt of my Chilldren without disturbance from any person entered the 26th November 1666. Anne Crew the Daughter of John Crew was borne 17th august 1655 Elyzabeth Crew was borne the first of November 1657 John Crew was born the first of March 1660" All in quotes from Liber B No. 1, pp. 37 and 38; Somerset County Court Proceedings. I could fill pages with the subsequent exploits of this John Crew and his stepfather Robert Hignett in Somerset Co., MD and Sussex Co., DE. They and Elizabeth were remarkable person in that time. When John made his will in 1713, he too mandated that his children were to be of age at "foureteene". John Hignett sold the 150 acres with Elizabeht consent before John was 14, when the family moved northward on the Eastern Shore, but John later signed the deed in his own right. John Hignett treated John Crew very well and John Crew prospered. John Crew named in his will, his grandson John Walls, my earliest ancester with my surname that I can find. Again, I am sorry for those of you that thought you were descended from this John Crew. Let us work together to find the common ancestor of both Johns. Sincerely, Brian Walls Columbia, Maryland.
