    2. PATRICIA RAY
    3. All, In case anyone needs to contact me privately (off the list) I'm changing my email address to Hotmail in order to make it accessible from anywhere in the world. Hopefully this will make it easier to keep up with the List while I'm traveling, like this July when we'll be in England. You can start using this address right away and I'll be able to better gauge whether I like this method and maybe I can become comfortable with it before this summer. Thanks. pat_ray@hotmail.com Ann, I'm so sorry to hear about your cousin. I wish you and all his family well. Donna, I don't have this family in my database but I'm glad you posted them. Maybe someone else will have something for Deanna. I suppose she has no clue to the parents of Samuel S.? I have one Samuel S. who was married to a Mary BARBER but that was in the late 1800s. Not the same ones. Pat p.s. I know I still owe some people answers. I'm getting there, I think! <G> _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Visit http://www.msn.com

    1. Re: [CREWS-L] Hello, Is there anyone home?
    2. I would like to inform everyone of the death of my first cousin, Willis Crews, dob 9/21/1953, son of Thomas Hardy Crews and Josephine Crews. Thomas was my dad's (Reuben Crews) brother (sons of Ivey Crews and Mary Jane Barber). Willis was a wonderful person and will be missed by all. May God be with him on his journey home and I ask that you all remember his family in your prayers. Ann Crews Hance LADYHANCE@aol.com

    1. [CREWS-L] Jeremiah Crews
    2. Brenda Webb
    3. Hello all, Jeremiah Cruse (b:1765, VA) , according to his son, John L. Cruse pension records states Jeremiah's fathers name as David and being born in VA. He (John) stated at the time of enlistment in the Seminole War, he was 22 years of age, five feet and six inches tall, with gray eyes, light colored hair, and a dark complexion. He states he was born at Lewisville, Jefferson County, Georgia on October 24, 1814. He states his mothers name Delilah Huggins born in VA. Could this be the same Jeremiah Crews that married Elizabeth Harland? It has been suggested by historians that during the era that many men had "consorts" and perhaps Delilah was Jeremiah's until Elizabeth's death. He married Delilah in Jefferson County GA in 1827, but John L. was born in 1814. Born out of wedlock or was this Elizabeth's son raised by Delilah? Can anyone out there help out with this one? Brenda

    3. Angela, Welcome! You're family belongs to a line that is slowly growing but still need lots of research. In short, your Amanda is d/o Banister CREWS (as you said). His ancestors are: Stephen, Hardy, Edward, Arthur, Edward. I don't have data on Amandas' spouse or desc's. She had 12 siblings and I have no further data on them except their names with one exception. Her brother Ephraim b. Oct 1845 Halifax Co, Va; m. Sara Rosalee SEATS b. Mar 1843. He d. 1911 and she d. 1913 in Advance, NC. I have one ch. for them, James Ephraim b. 1873 Davidson NC d. 1949 Advance NC, m. Autie BURNETTE. I'd appreciate any other data you could add to this for Amanda & her siblings. Here's more on Banisters' ancestors: Stephen Scott CREWS b. abt 1782 (c1774/84) Caswell Co, NC; d. abt 1856 (or1830/40) Jackson co, IL; m. 5 May 1802 Person Co, NC Margaret STILES. I show 9 ch. for them. Stephens' parents were Hardy CREWS b. 1740, d. after 1830 Person Co, NC, m. Martha Luethera GOOCHE for one and poss. a Martha ___? for another. In any case I show 3 daus for Stephen and Martha GOOCHE and 10 ch. for Stephen and Martha including Stephen Scott. Hardys' parents were Edward b. c1714 and Sarah CREWS. John, Edward & Josiah were his 3 youngest ch. as of 1773, named in his brother William's will. 10/95 *P: Edward had 2 land grants from the king of Eng, one in 1749 and the other in 1760; d 1787 Mecklenburg Co VA. "Hardy was oldest son, next in line was sister Median, next was Hardy's bro John Crews who m Sarah Nash. Altogether I show 10 ch. for Edward & Sarah. Edwards' parents were Arthur CREWS & Mary GRUMBALL (poss.) Son Wm. had will 1773 Halifax Co VA in which he named (by name) his siblings and each of their 3 youngest ch. (except Mary's were not named, just said ch of). I show 9 ch. for Arthur & Mary. Arthurs parents were Edward & Sarah CREWS - I assume this is a diff couple from the Edw & Sarah above. An Edward Crews was transported to Md in 1680 [Early Md Settlers by Skordas: WC2-Folio-133] There are others of your line on this mailing list, and they may want to add something - or not. If you have questions, they may be able to answer them. What I gave you is all I have except for names of siblings, etc. If you'd like a more complete desc. chart for Arthur & Sarah CREWS, let me know, although you can probably get one in the CREWS archives on RootsWeb. I hope you'll be able to share more data on your family. If you only want to list the ones born bef. 1900 or 1920, that's ok. I'll take what I can get. 1. Parents of David M. Crews
    2. MRS JOANNE R BLACK
    3. To Mary Lynn Crews, Re. your 4/18/99 note inquiring abt parents of David M. CREWS m. Elizabeth "Betsy" SMITH: In our CREWS db (which is a FYI type, use only for leads and clues since input to it is from a variety of sources, proven and unproven and most certainly has to contain some errors) we had originally been showing David M. as s/o Jeremiah CREWS per info from researchers we had at that time. However, I now show him as s/o Redman CREWS per this info posted to the Prodigy CREWS bulletin board in Sep 1997 by Joann Caravito (who is a member of this mail list). If you need the name of the d/o Richard Clay CREWS send me an email and I will send to you privately.: (quote) The DAR application about Redman Crews'sdescendants is as follows: 1. (d/o Richard Clay CREWS, still living) 2. Richard Clay Crews born 15 Jan 1893 at Crawford Co., Indiana, died at Louisville, Ky 24 April 1982 and his wife was Anna Elizabeth McCarty born 12 June 1896 at Kerry Co., Ireland. She died at Louisville, KY 11 June 1951. They were married June 1920. 3. Richard Clay Crews was son of Jeremiah R. Crews born Aug 1852 at Monroe Co., KY died at Crawford Co., Ind. on 9 Oct 1935. Wife was Sarah E. Goldman born Jan 1858 at Crawford Co. Ind. died at Crawford Co. Ind 8 Feb 1932. Married about 1889. 4. Jeremiah R. Crews was son of David M. Crews born 1829 at Monroe Co. KY died Crawford Co. Ind. married abot 1850-51 to Susan Ann Brown born 1831 at Monroe Co. KY died Crawford Co.Ind. 5. David M. Crews was son of David M. Crews born 18 Dec 1793 at Green Co., KY died at Crawford Co. Ind about 1870 his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Smith born 1794 at Green Co. KY died Crawford Co. Ind bef 1880. They were married 7 Feb 1815 at Barren Co. KY. 6. David M. Crews was son of Redman Crews born 1764 Halifax Co. Va. died Carroll Co., Tenn 1831. References: Barren Co. KY tax records for proof of David being son of Redman. Pension Application and Payment Record and lastly Preponderance of evidence-tax, Pension, Affidavit until proved wrong.... Children of Redman listed as: Redman b. 1822, Barbara Ann b. 1824, John [no dates] and David b. 18 Dec 1793 m. Elizabeth Smith. (end of quote) I show that Elizabeth "Betsy" SMITH was d/o Jeremiah Motten/Molten SMITH and Diana (unk), so that would account for the names Redman and Jeremiah following through the desc. of this family. To answer your other questions, I have quite a bit on this but a lot of it is on other lines that tie into this one. Since it would be very long and probably not of general interest to most Crews researchers on this list, I'm sending it to you privately. Hope this helps, Joanne

    3. The information on David Crews listed below perpetuates the idea that he was born in England, which, as Donna Hechler Porter has presented convincingly in her book METES AND BOUNDS II, he was not. In fact, it was probably his grandfather who came from England. I believe that one source of this idea may have been a statement in "History of Howard & Cooper Counties" (1883) made by David's grandson Samuel Tribble Crews, MD (son of David Crews, Jr) that his grandfather was "a sturdy Yorkshireman." Who knows where this family story got started! David (or David Milton) was however a good source of SAR and DAR memberships. My mother's half-sisters listed him as their DAR membership ancestor. (We are descended through his son, Andrew). 1. [CREWS-L] Parents of David M. Crews
    2. Mary Lynn Crews
    3. I am searching for information on the parents of David M. Crews (12/18/1789 - 1870?) married to Elizabeth Betsy Smith. Some previous researchers in my family believe that he is the son of Redman Crews (married to ?), son of John Crews and Sarah Redman. Recently, it has been suggested that David M. may instead be the son of Jeremiah Crews and Elizabeth Harlan, with Jeremiahs parents being David M. Crews and Anna McGahea (McGee). Both of the names Redman and Jeremiah appear in other generations of my line. If anyone can supply any information which will assist me, I would be very appreciative. I have copies of a few postings about Redman (none listing his children), but none about Jeremiah. Here is the information on my oldest Crews ancestor: 1-David M. Crews (12/18/1789 - abt 1870, Crawford Co. Indiana) m. Elizabeth Betsy Smith (7/20/1792 - ?, Crawford County, Indiana) on 2-7-1815 in Barren Co, KY. 2-William R. Crews, b 12/20/1827 m. on 9-15-1850 Tiggy A. Ferguson b. 5-24-1834 (Tiggy is the daughter of Daniel and Ann Ferguson) 3-Thomas H. R. Crews, b 3/27/1853 3-Betty Ann Crews, b 10/24/1854 3-Jeremiah G. Crews, b 12/7/1856 3-Julie Francis Crews, b 6/29/1859 3-Monerva M. Crews, b 10/23/1864 3-William Linsey Watson Crews, b 8-26-1867 3-John Washington Crews, b 12/9/1869 (I am descended from John Washington and will provide additional descendants if anyone is interested) 2-David M. Crews, b 1829 2-James Crews, b 1831 2-Catherine Crews, b 1834 2- *** family researchers believe there are additional children - does anyone know them? Thank you in advance for your information. 1. [CREWS-L] John Crews of Wake Co., NC
    2. My earliest proven Crews is yet another John Crews who d. 1799 Wake Co., NC. He is not on the 1790 Wake Census and there is evidence they came from Sussex Co., Va. where his son Benjamin was in 1794. John's ES lists his wife Naomi as administratrix and in a later document, the administrator or administratrix is listed as Minor Crews. It is unclear whether these two are the same and whether the second document says administrator or administratrix--all those curlicues in the handwriting, you know. As these are the only Crewses in Wake records at the time, the following children appear to belong to John and Naomi: 1. Benjamin, d. 1826 Dickson Co., Tn., married Lucretia _____ 2. Seaborn, d. after 1860, Dickson Co., Tn., married (1)____, (2) Mary 3. Mary (Polly), married James Sims, moved to Dickson Co. with an older woman in her household who was probably her mother. Mary was HOH in 1820 Dickson census 4. Temperance, m. William Nutt, no further info on her We think there was an older son as well and possibly others. My line is Benjamin and Lucretia. Their children: 1. Pleasant, ca 1793-after 1860, d. Dickson Co., Tn., m. Mary 2. Male, possibly Robert 3. Female Unknown, ca 1791-1800, no death date nor other info 4. Female unknown, same 5. Veasey An older woman appears in the household of Calvin in Perry Co. 1840 who is probably Lucretia. It is proven that she could not be his wife's mother. This person's age is over 45. Peter Moody Crews and his first wife who was reportedly Mary Tubb, is my line. He married (2)Nancy ___ in Tn. and (3)Elizabeth Jane Coley. He had 17, possibly 19 children, most by Nancy, probably 3 by his first wife, 2 by Elizabeth who may also have had twins who didn't survive. 1. James Madison, 24 Dec 1828-12 Mar 1885, d. 1. CREWS RW SOLDIERS
    2. MRS JOANNE R BLACK
    3. Below is some info I received that might be of interest to some of you, evidently the info listed below is all that is available on the CD for the five who were listed as patriots (I inquired). I don't have any more information on this, but perhaps this tidbit might be of help. Jo This what I received: "The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) "Patriot Index' CD-ROM has about fifty listings for name CREWS, five of whom were patriots. Here are the five: RICHARD, b. 1748 VA, d. 1835 KY REDMAN, b. 1760 VA , d. 1832 TN JOHN, b. 1750 VA, d.1792 VA GIDEON, b. 1740 Hanover Co. VA, d. 1815 NC. (He is listed twice - i.e., has two or more decendents who are SAR members.) DAVID, b. 1740 Eng., d. 1821 Madison Co. KY (Listed twice) David's wife was ANNE MAGEE, their daughter was MARY CREWS. (SAR #122930) but one listing shows ANNE and daughter MARY but shows a second wife for DAVID: MILDRED WILLIFORD CARLEW and their son ANDREW. (SAR File Ref #13883). One of the records shows a Mary married to Abraham Newland and that this Mary was b. 25 Dec 1761 Charles City Co. VA, m. 27 Sept 1782, Washington VA, d. 14 Nov 1838 Madison Co. KY (SAR File 18882) The SAR member's application record showing descendants of the patriot are available from SAR headquarters in Louisville KY. Each record, I believe, is five dollars, if you would like to see any of them. The SAR numbers listed with them might be useful if you try to order their records from SAR Hq. The "SAR Patriot Index" is put out by PRODIGY PUBLISHING, Olympic Towers Suite 200, 300 Pearl Street, Buffalo NY 14202, phone for orders is 1-800-565-0018. They also produce the SAR Revolutionary War Graves Registration. So far as I know you do not have to be an SAR member to order. The address to obtain a record copy of an SAR application (or anything else) is NATIONAL SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, 1000 South Fourth Street, Louisville KY 40203. Hq SAR also has a web site you might like to browse. They will not do a search for you but with the numbers I gave you (not all those numbers are from the same series) or that you get from the Patriot Index, apparently for five dollars they will supply a record. These records will, to some extent, show sources. The work is all done by volunteers. " (end of quote. Jo)

    3. Just want to let you all know that on Thursday I subscribed the RootsWeb Threaded Archives to this mailing list which means that they will now get a copy of our notes and our notes will all go into the Threaded Archives from this point on. Now I know that all our notes for the past year and 4 months have gone into the RootWeb archives, but since these Threaded Archives are not including those notes, I propose that we all post our lines one more time so that they will be "threaded". I think I'll start it off myself with my own data. My gggf was John CREWS b. abt 1809 Madison Co, KY; d. 15 Aug 1891 Franklin Co, MO; m. 25 Dec 1831 Martha "Patsy" RHODUS b. c1812 Madison Co, KY, d. aft 1880 Franklin Co, MO; d/o Wm. Jesse RHODUS and Mary ELLIOTT of S.C. I have no proof of who his parents were, but others have told me that they were Robert and Rebecca CREWS of Va. Robert was s/o Richard CREWS & Esther PUCKETT. Richard s/o Richard CREWS and (prob) Sarah OWEN. This Richard had a brother, John, but we don't know their parents. Our family oral history says that our first ancestor in this country was a young blacksmith from No. England who, while vacationing in London, was shanghied and brought to work on the plantations of Lord Baltimore in the early 1600s. I was pleasantly surprised when I was given a reference that mentioned someone who was "enveigled" on to a ship in London. He was handed over to a man near Jamestown Va in 1667. With him was a man named John CREWS. (It HAD to be "John", didn't it!) I am extremely interested in learning more about this John CREWS. Supposedly, two of his gsons (prob ggsons) fought in the Rev. War and obtained land in KY for it. This part of the story doesn't fit with the Richards CREWS line, so that confuses the issue. There WAS brothers in KY who obtained land through Land Grants. This was David Milton CREWS and John CREWS. But I'm unable to find evidence that these men belong to my line. HELP? 3. This came through on another mail list today. DATABASE OF THE DAY (Free for 10 Days!) Virginia Marriage Index, 1740-1850 Throughout the 18th and well into the 19th Century, Virginia was one of the most populous states in the Union, being home to as many as 1.2 million persons at any one time. This collection of marriage records includes the names of over 300,000 men and women married in the state between 1740 and 1850. In addition to providing the names of bride and groom, researchers will find the date of marriage and county in which the ceremony was performed. For those seeking married ancestors from Virginia, this database can be a valuable source of information. Bibliography: Dodd, Jordan R, et. al. "Early American Marriages: Virginia."
