Hello Nena, It has been a while since we corresponded.  Refresh my memory of the member of the Grass family you are following.  In the last few months, I have been gathering data on my wife's ancestor: George Cress who immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1754.  I am trying to figure out what town in Germany was his hometown.  If I know your interest, I can keep an eye out as I research.David On Saturday, February 21, 2015 8:53 PM, Nena Smothers via <[email protected]> wrote: From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Message from Cress:Request for ancestry information Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2015 01:49:55 +0000 This is a special request from David Attride, whose wife is adescendant of “Rev War” George Cress, born ~1739 PA.  David is working onpublishing a book on the Cress surname, and one of the chapters will addressall the Cress (and variant spellings such as Gress, Kress, etc) families of PAbefore 1785. The people didn't want to be ruled by what was then considered as the "evil empire", so they made an important step forward and took their lives under their own control. Empires come and go. When structures of power are too entangled, it sometimes needs a courageous leader who steps away from crusted structures and starts a small revolution. The current situation in genetic genealogy is similar. There is only one big provider who holds almost the complete genealogical Y-STR database in his hands. So far there is nothing wrong with this, as long as the data is accessible for the genealogists who need it. However since there is no competition, the big provider has become lazy with further developments and with fixing long term mistakes in the STR database. Implementing micro-alleles in the database or adding some simple rules that consider palindromic recombination events should be a minimum standard for an informative Y-STR database. In fact a significant increase of mistakes has been reported by customers during the last year that mainly involve micro-alleles, null alleles and palindromic Y-STR markers. This is where we need to take action now! DYS464 is the biggest hotspot of errors in Y-STR databases. It's time to clean out the DYS464 mistakes from your projects. DYS464 has normally 4 alleles, but sometimes there are 8 or up to 12 alleles at this palindromic marker. Therefore YSEQ has a special offer from July 4th to July 12th where you can order DYS464X for $9.95, the price of a normal STR marker! This is not only the unsorted alleles, but we also report the L464 SNP status of each STR allele which is important in R1b. And that's even not all, you also get the DYF399X marker for FREE in the XTD panel! This is a very fast mutating 3 copy Y-STR marker that you can use to work out closely related haplotypes in your project and it also makes it easier to recognize and explain duplications and deletions in the palindromic region due to the asymmetric structure of this DYF399 marker. This is your opportunity as a project administrator to mobilize your project participants to get this informative double pack of DYS464X and DYF399X at the price of a breakfast in a coffee shop! We have received some incredibly positive feedback and this is much appreciated. > We are also hearing the frustrations from those who have not yet received their results, and we would like to address the matter publicly in the form of a sincere apology. The entire FTDNA team has been working very hard over the last few months with high determination and many late nights. Launching a new product is always a challenge with many moving parts, some more predictable than others. Unfortunately we ran into some surprises beyond our control when one of our suppliers ran out of certain reagents we needed for running the Big Y product. However we recognize that it is our responsibility and duty to meet our deadlines and keep our customers informed when problems arise. With the Big Y launch, we failed to properly manage the expectations of our customers. This was an honest oversight, in which we internally had a target to release first results in February, but we didn’t pay close attention to the dates being communicated on the status pages for those orders. Big Y was a new product and the status entries were updated automatically. We should have manually adjusted these dates earlier on as needed. So while we were thrilled to release the first results in February, we failed to realize that everyone expected results this week. I personally take responsibility for this miscommunication and mishap with the website delivery dates and hope you accept my sincere apologies. > I am well aware that as a company we have a bit of a history in missing deadlines. A big contributor to that is that we have typically been very ambitious in taking on difficult projects while still wanting to deliver information quickly to customers. The Big Y product is a great example. It was a cutting-edge project that pushed us deep into next-generation sequencing and advanced data analysis. Our ambitious, risk-taking attitude has won many of you over and delivered incredible thought leadership and leading products over the years. Unfortunately, our poor estimates and turnaround time expectations have frustrated many of you along the way as well. We are committed to continuing to be the company that is willing to push the envelope and take risks to bring you the best in genetic genealogy, but moving forward we will strive to be more careful in setting accurate time expectations. > Again, we are sincerely sorry for any frustration we caused with the delays and miscommunication of turnaround time. We are very proud of our achievements with the Big Y and feel confident about the high quality product we are delivering! We hope you will let the wonderful product we produced make up for delays that were needed to refine it! We have updated expected results dates on customer pages and will work around the clock to beat them. Regards, Nir Leibovich Chief Business Officer www.FamilyTreeDna.com Gene by Gene Ltd.

Distributed either as an attachment to a malicious e-mail or as a drive-by download, CryptoLocker first attempts to connect to a command-and-control server, after which it generates a 2048-bit RSA public and private key pair, and uploads the key to the server. The malware then attempts to encrypt data on any local or network storage drive that the user can access using a 2048-bit RSA key, targeting files matching a whitelist of file extensions. While the public key is stored on the computer, the private key is stored on the command-and-control server; CryptoLocker demands a payment with either a MoneyPak card or Bitcoin to recover the key and begin decrypting files, and threatens to delete the private key if a payment is not received within 3 days. Due to the extremely large key size it uses, analysts and those affected by the worm have considered CryptoLocker to be extremely difficult to repair. No virus found in this message. PLEASe notice on the previous note on the sale I sent, I later noticed the upgrade from 67-111 was not correct, but it is correct below, please take note and I still highly recommend anyone that has done the 67 test should take this advantage to now order the 111, it prob won't get much cheaper than 109. for awhile this is really a great sale, probably one of the best there is and you will definitely get so much better results for the 111 marker test. Also really the 37-67 upgrade is a great guy too for anyone who has 37 suggest to take advantage of this very low price to upgrade to 67 as you will get better results. Its just 79 bucks Let me now so I can send the link to order or you can log into yr personal pg and order the upgrade from 67-111, it will be right there on yr personal pg and can be done very simply........any problems at all please get ahold of myself or our co admin Dave Dowell Again anyone that can donate to our fund which is 0$ please go to the link even 5 bucks is helpful and much appreciated allot! and you will be helping someone who wants to order but is short on funds Nena Smothers NE WA Smothers Tribe DNA Project Admin 2002-2013 [email protected] Dave Dowell co admin Dave dna Dowell E-mail Address(es): [email protected] http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Smothers Link to contribute to test kits for Smothers Tribe DNA project http://www.familytreedna.com/group-general-fund-contribution.aspx From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Date: Fri, 15 Nov 2013 17:02:49 -0600 Subject: Message from I2a:FTDNA sale, Big Y, and our recommendations Dear I2a Project members: FTDNA has begun its end-of-year discount sale. Most upgrades and new kits have temporarily dropped in price, if payment is made by December 31. FTDNA has also announced a Big Y test for $695, discounted to $495 if ordered and paid for by December 1st. Our current recommendations are: The I2a1b (I-L160) group (part of "Sardinian") should order the Genographic 2.0 test, or some individual SNPs starting with PF4088. The Genographic 2.0 test is also discounted for a limited time, now $159.95, usually $199.95 People in the I-Z106 group (part of I2a1b Sardinian) should consider ordering Big Y. People in the I2a2 (I-L621 or I-CTS5966) "Dinaric-N" and "Dinaric-S" group should consider ordering the Big Y. People in the I2a2b (I-L161) "Isles-A" group should order PF4135. People in the I2a3 (I-L233) "Western" group should consider ordering the Big Y. Everyone is welcome to order Big Y, but it will be most useful if there are related Big Y results to compare to your own results. People in active surname projects might want to order Big Y for several related people to sort out the different branches of the family. Or you may wish to contact other people in your subhaplogroup (M26-"France" or Isles-C for example) and arrange for multiple tests. In many cases, upgrading to 67 or 111 markers would be very helpful to our project. Below you can find more details about the sale, Big Y, and how to order these tests. I suspect that this gift card is only sent to Americans, because Restaurant.com only advertises American restaurants. To order SNPs like PF4135 and PF4088 the cost is $39 each. The easiest way to order is to make a donation of $39 to the general fund (and include your name), then email us and we will order it for you. Or contact us for instructions on how to order these SNPs yourself. The Genographic 2.0 test must be ordered directly from their website: http://shop.nationalgeographic.com/ngs/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=2001246&gsk&code=MR20936 The cost is currently $159.95 with free shipping in the US, $10 to Canada, and $20 to most countries in Europe and to Australia. Once you have Geno 2.0 results you will be able to add them to your existing FTDNA account. FTDNA is also offering a substantial but temporary discount on its new Big Y test: only $495 now, but $695 starting December 1. This next-generation Y-DNA test examines at least 10 million locations on the Ychromosome, looking for reliable SNPs suitable for ancestry and genealogy. One projection is that it will find roughly 1 SNP for every 125 years of history. Big Y was announced at FTDNA’s yearly conference, which took place last weekend, and immediately became available for order. Here are two blog posts about the announcement and the test itself: DNA-Explained Cruwys My understanding is that this product should be the last Y-DNA test you will ever need. As I see it, the Big Y test has three primary purposes: To determine your clade’s relationship with nearby clades in the haplotree. For example: If at least one member of I2a1, I2a2, I2a3, I2a4 and I2a5 orders Big Y, we can compare results and draw a tree to reconstruct the history of how these five groups diverged thousands of years ago. To determine the relationship of your own patrilineage with others in your clade. For example: three people in I2a3 (I-L233) have already ordered Big Y. When we compare the results we will see that two of them are more closely related to each other, and the third is more distant. The Big Y will give dozens of new SNPs for each person, but when we compare several results from a clade we will see that one or two SNPs are very important, and then other people can test these SNPs individually instead of ordering Big Y. To estimate TMRCAs better than STRs (markers) can. The long list of SNPs (known and unknown) found by Big Y should be interpretable as a time estimator. At this point we have the following orders for Big Y: I2a1b (I-L160) I-Z106 subgroup: one order I2a2 (I-L621 or I-CTS5966) "Dinaric": four orders I2a2b "Isles-B3" one order I2a2b "Isles-D2" two orders I2a3 (I-L233) "Western" three orders One Big Y test by itself is not so interesting because we won't know which SNPs are ancient and which are recent. The more Big Y results we have for a group like Dinaric, the more we will learn. Again: The Big Y sale price of $495 ends November 30 (or perhaps December 1), after which it will cost $695.

The following was reported on the announcement. "Today’s big news is that David Mittelman with FamilyTree DNA late this afternoon announced the Big Y DNA test which would be known as a ‘full Y sequence” test. The test will provide results on 10,000,000 base-pairs and approximately 25,000 SNPs on the Y chromosome. The regular price is $695, but it is being initially offered to current clients only for $495 though the end of November. A current vial can be used if one exists, otherwise a new one will be sent." http://dna-explained.com/2013/11/10/family-tree-dna-announces-the-big-y/ I've done some follow up checking and FTDNA says the results will integrate into our FTDNA project report systems so we'll be able to share the information and better understand DF27 and build out our deep ancestral family tree to a greater extent. They do consider this a Y SNP discovery test with a lot more coverage than they’ve had before and with very good reliability. If you are interested, please be sure to consider thisquickly as the price goes up significantly on December 1st. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to email me and I’ll try to respond or research them as best as I can. Thanks!
