On his son John's death certificate he was referred to as a labourer. Donald's death was recorded: 1855 Death Kilmadock #57 - Donald CRERAR, Labourer, 42y born Balmore, parish of Kenmore, lived Kilmadock 9 years. Parents were Peter CRERAR, Weaver & Christian McLAREN. Married Catherine CRERAR ms McINTYRE decd. Children were Christina, 21. Anne, decd at 2y. Peter, 15; Janet, 14; John, 12. Annie, 9. Daniel decd at 1y. Duncan 5y. Died Oct 12, 1855 2pm at Doune of Conica Pictonum, 5 days duration. Cert'd Thomas Inmeison or Jameison, Surgeon, Doune who last saw decd 12 Oct. Donald and Edith had eleven children [Shirley Gaskill: salisbury@ihug.com.au]: a. PETER CRERAR (b. 1888 Glasgow -d. 21 August 1916, Somme, WWI) Peter was a Sergeant in the "B" Company, 5th Battalion of the Cameronian (Scottish Rifles) (6316) He was killed in the First World War at the age of 28 [CWGC, Edinburgh Castle Book of Fame]. He is buried at Thistle Dump Cemetery, High Wood, Longueval [grave: A. 27]. Longueval is a village in the Department of the Somme, 11 kilometres east of Albert. Thistle Dump Cemetery was begun in August 1916, and used as a front-line cemetery until February 1917; and the Germans buried five of their dead in it in March and April, 1918. It was increased after the Armistice by the concentration of 56 graves from the Somme battlefields. There are now nearly 200 1914-1918 war casualties buried in this site. Also living with her were Peter Crerar (Janet's nephew) (bc 1839), a farm labourer, and Agnes Crerar (Janet's niece) (bc 1846), a domestic servant. In 1861 Janet was a factory worker. They married 28 Dec 1866 [SRO 362-24] in Kilmadock: "On 28th December at Doune (8 3/4 miles NW of Stirling; in Kilmadock) after banns according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland, William Galbraith, aged 21, bachelor, hawker, Thornhill, Kincardine and Janet Crerar, aged 23, spinster, domestic servant, Doune." William Galbraith was the son of John Galbraith, a china merchant, and Catherine Gilchrist. Janet and William had four children: 1. John Galbraith (b.23 Oct 1867 Kincardine) 2. John was a journeyman baker, son of Donald Crerar, journeyman weaver, and Catherine McIntyre, of Doune. Both of his parents had passed away before his marriage. Catherine was a domestic servant, the daughter of David Stewart of Laborne(?), and Margaret Keir [SRO 490-76] [some of the information about their children courtesy of Catherine Law]. At the time of his daughter Jacobina's birth in 1881, to his death, he was a grocer's porter. John appears to have married a second wife, Maggie, who was listed as the stepmother of his daughters in the 1901 census. There is a record for Catherine Crerar (bc 1845 - d 1883 age 38 Kilmadock 362-8). John died on 3 May 1886 at 8:35 am at Deanston, Kilmadock at age 42 [#19]. His death records states that he was a carter, who had been married to (1) Catherine Stewart; (2) Margaret McLaren. His parents were Donald Crerar, Labourer, and Catherine McIntyre, both deceased. Callander, spoke Gaelic and English), her son Ralph Eusdon (33, b. Ruskie, Perthshire), stepdaughters Annie, a turkey red dyer (?) (22, b. Stirling), and Jacobina, a turkey red dyer (?) (18, b. Her parents were listed as John Crerar, grocer's porter, and Catherine Stewart. In 1901 she was a turkey red dyer living in Bonhill [Census]. They married 1 April 1907 at 31 Napierston Terrace, Jamestown, Dumbarton. Jacobina was the daughter of John Crerar, Grocer's port (deceased) and Catherine Stewart, both deceased. William was the son of Thomas Ross (b 1853), a press printer, and Annie Graham (b 1858)[#48]. William and Jacobina were both printfield hands. They lived at 60 Levenbank Terrace, Jamestown, Dumbarton from 1909 to 1946. William died of apoplexy at the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow.
