Another forwarded message containing the surname CRERAR arrived today, this one from the ONTARIO-L mailing list. It is a Transcription project for Ontario Marriages. The full listing for this marriage of Jeanie CRERAR born Scotland married in Toronto is below and in the Archives of the ONTARIO-L Mailing List. Give it 1-2 days to arrive into the Archives and you can see the full Post, it gives a link to a larger Ontario marriage database. The IGI has a Patron Submission [including death statistics], stating this same lass was born 29 May, 1866, but this is appears to not be correct. Conflicting data gotten from Civil Registration records [also on the IGI] says her birthday is a year later, 14 May, 1867. She also chopped 2 years off her age at the Registrar's Office in Toronto, she was really 29 ! I guess she didn't want to report that she was older than her husband ? Her birthplace was East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, Scotland, mother's maiden name was ARROL. - MegG
I sent these 2 days ago......to another list ! I'd sent them to my KEHR list instead....no clue why, these 2 names may sound similar, but they are completly different visually. Anyway, here are the names in the final batch, they were sent earlier to Julia and David, they have already sent the complete list grouped together by place of enumeration which helps identify family groups. The is GREAT to see - Thanks so much for your time and effort. It will serve our Archives nicely....Meg G Original Post from 2 days ago : There are 45 entries here. DAVID KNOX CRERAR (b.1888 Wood Green, London -d. 2 May 1915 Gallipoli WWI) David enrolled at Helena Vale ,Western Australia, and served as a Private (873) in the 11th Bn., Australian Infantry, A.I.F, and died on Sunday, 2nd May 1915, aged 27. He is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey [Panel Number: 33]. The Lone Pine Memorial is at the east end of Lone Pine Cemetery, which stands on the plateau at the top of Victoria Gully, and is located on the road from Gaba Tepe to Chunuk Bair. Both Lone Pine Cemetery and Lone Pine Memorial are named after the solitary pine tree that grew there. The Memorial stands on the site of the fiercest fighting at Lone Pine and overlooks the whole front line of May, 1915. Many of those whose names are recorded on the Memorial were buried on that front, in graves made in haste and obliterated by shell-fire later. The Memorial is built of limestone from the Ulgar Dere quarries. It is a massive pylon in plain ash, about 45 feet square and 47 feet high. The names of the Australian dead are carved on panels of Hopton Wood Stone let into the screen wall in front of the Memorial, and those of the New Zealand dead appear on similar panels on the Memorial itself. The purpose of this Memorial is expressed in the inscription carved in the centre of the screen wall before the Memorial: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LASTING MEMORIAL OF 3,268 AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS WHO FOUGHT ON GALLIPOLI IN 1915 AND HAVE NO KNOWN GRAVES, AND 456 NEW ZEALAND SOLDIERS WHOSE NAMES ARE NOT RECORDED IN OTHER AREAS OF THE PENINSULA BUT WHO FELL IN THE ANZAC AREA AND HAVE NO KNOWN GRAVES; AND ALSO OF 960 AUSTRALIANS AND 252 NEW ZEALANDERS WHO, FIGHTING ON GALLIPOLI IN 1915, INCURRED MORTAL WOUNDS OR SICKNESS AND FOUND BURIAL AT SEA. The Anzac Area, as defined by the Treaty of Lausanne, is an area of about 2 square miles, permanently conceded by the Turkish Government in its entirety on account of the number of cemeteries and unlocated graves that it contains. In a wider sense, it is the midmost of the three areas into which our operations on Gallipoli, and our cemeteries there, are divided. Its occupation was begun at half-past four on the morning of 25th April, 1915, when the 3rd Australian Brigade landed at Ari Burnu. That Brigade was followed by the remainder of the 1st Australian Division and by the New Zealand and Australian Division. Before the end of April the landing place had become "Anzac Cove," and the code name formed by the initial letters of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps had been given to the semi-circular area, 1,100 yards across, held by the Corps. From April to August a series of desperate attacks and counter attacks took place on the edge of the Anzac Area. The 4th Australian Battalion attacked the position afterwards known as Johnston's Jolly on 26th April, and during the first few days both Australian and New Zealand troops made desperate attacks to gain possession of the Nek. The "Chessboard," further North, was attacked on 2nd May by the 13th, 15th and 16th Australian Battalions, the Otago Infantry Regiment and two battalions of Marines; and on the same day a Turkish Observation Post at Lala Baba was destroyed by New Zealanders. On 4th May the 11th Battalion (of which David Knox Crerar was a member) raided Gaba Tepe. From the 9th to the 15th, and from the 28th to the 5th June, there was fierce fighting round Quinn's Post. From the 19th to the 21st May the Turks, in an engagement known to us as "The Defence of Anzac", assaulted the centre of the position; their casualties were very great and an armistice was arranged for the 24th May in order to bury the dead. On the night of the 29th-30th June they made another unsuccessful attack. On the 6th-10th August Australian, New Zealand and Indian forces, with part of the 13th Division, attempted to carry Chunuk Bair and Hill 971, inland from, and North-East of, the "original Anzac Area"; and New Zealand troops, with others, at one time reached the summit of Chunuk Bair and held it until they were relieved. By the 12th, Bauchop's Hill, Table Top, and a considerable salient covering Argyl Dere had been taken, and at the South end of the line Lone Pine was secured by the 1st Australian Division; but Baby 700, Chunuk Bair and Hill 60 (on the Suvla side) were still in enemy hands, in spite of the desperate bravery and the temporary successes of the main force. This fighting (the Battle of Sari Bair) was the climax of the effort to reach the central hills of the Peninsula. On the 21st-29th August, in conjunction with the forces at Suvla, Australian infantry and Light Horse, New Zealand Mounted Rifles, and some British and Indian infantry captured half of Hill 60. From that time onwards the line remained stationary. After long and anxious consideration, it was decided to withdraw from Gallipoli, and on the 18th-20th December, 1915, Anzac was evacuated without the loss of a single man. The Memorial stands on the site of the fiercest fighting at Lone Pine; and it overlooks the whole front line of May, 1915. Many of those whose names are recorded on the Memorial were buried on that front, in graves made in haste and obliterated by shell-fire later. Many were killed in tunnels or in trenches. The proportion of dead whose names are on Memorials on Gallipoli, and not on headstones, is very high. [CWGC]. 10. I think that this is the family..... 8. JOHN MACDOUGALL CRERAR (b.1835 Lawers, Kenmore - d.1896) = Catherine CAMPBELL (bc 1843 Scotland) [IGI] John was the youngest son of Peter Crerar and Christian MacDougall, and bore her mother's maiden name as a middle name. The marriage of John and Catherine was recorded 1865 in St.Giles, Edinburgh [685-4-225]. In 1881 the family lived at Castle Hill, Crosscanonby, Cumberland, England [census]. There is a Crerar Close in Maryport, presumably named after John or his famous son Sir James. 1. CHRISTINA CRERAR (b. 11 Oct 1866 Maryport, Cumbria, England) [IGI] 2. Dr. JOHN WILLIAM CRERAR (b.1868 Maryport - d. 7 Jan 1954 Snape, Suffolk) In 1901 John Wm Crerar, MB CM, had an address at 11 High St Maryport, with his brother Charles (1901) [Directory]. His mother Catherine (58) resided with him at Netherhall, Cumberland [census]. Dr. J.W. Crerar (86), who died at Snape, Suffolk, had a distinguished medical career in Edinburgh before going into practice in his native Maryport. He graduated in medicine at Edinburgh University in 1889, and became an F.R.C.S. in 1905. In 1892 he published, "Note on the absence of the subclavius muscle" in J. Anat. Physilo. 26:554. A winner of the Vans Dunlop Scholarship in physiology and surgery he was residential surgeon at the Royal Infirmary and demostrator of anatomy at Edinburgh University. He was a former president of the Royal Medical Society, Edinburgh. Dr. Crerar retired last year after over 50 years in practice at Maryport. During that period his services to the town, both as a practitioner and in numerous other capacities, made him a uniquely respected figure. He was a Magistrate until debarred by age; and served on the Board of Harbour Commissioners. He also wrote a history of the town [from his obituary, The Scotsman 11 January 1954], and contributed to a genealogy of Joseph and Maria (Lucock) Sealby. On 19 August 1906, John arrived in New York on the Calendonia from Glasgow; in 19 June 1910, while resident in Maryport, John arrived in New York on the Columbia from Glasgow [Ellis Island Records]. 2. CHARLES CRERAR (bc 1870 Maryport) In 1901 Charles Crerar, surgeon, had an address at Monimail Silloth, Cumbria [Directory]. 3. KATE CRERAR (bc 1872 Maryport) = Daniel B. KENNEDY They married 2 September 1897 at Crosscanonby, Cumbria [Wigtown Free Press] 4. PETER A. CRERAR (bc 1874 Maryport) 5. ALFRED CRERAR (bc 1876 Maryport) At 1901 Alfred Crerar, solicitor, resided at 11 High St, Maryport with his brother Dr. John [Directory]. 6. Sir JAMES CRERAR (b.11 December 1877 Maryport - d. 29 August 1960)= Evelyn BRAND (d.1954) [from his obituary]: Sir James Crerar, K.C.S.I. (1929), C.I.E.(1917), who spent the first 20 years of his Indian Civil Service career in the Bombay Presidency and was later Secretary and then Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council in the Home Department, died on Monday, 29 August 1960. He was 82. He was born on December 11, 1877, the son of John Crerar, of Maryport, Cumberland, and educated at George Watson's College and the University of Edinburgh. He passed the Indian Civil Service examination of 1900 and spent his probationary year at Balliol College, Oxford, where he gained his M.A. On arrival in Bombay he was posted to Sind for early district experience and in 1906 became Assistant Collector and Manager Encumbered Estates in that sub-province. Having quickly acquired the mastery of Sindhi he held for five years the post of translator to Government. At the end of 1911 Crerar was transferred to Rajkot as Assistant Political Agent in the Kathiawar State. In the middle of 1913 he was selected to be Municipal Commissioner of the Town and Island of Bombay and within a year was officiating as Secretary of the Judicial, Political and Special Department. His courtly bearing and other qualities attracted the attention of the new Governor Lord Willingdon, and soon after the outbreak of war in 1914 he was selected to be the Governor's Private Secretary. Bombay was the real base of the many Indian contingents and it received the greater number of sick and wounded from Mesopotamia, British and Indian, and other Eastern theatres of the conflict. The services of the Willingdons in innumerable ways were of the utmost value to the Allied cause, and they had in Crerar an enthusiastic as well as a wise and patient right-hand man. At the end of 1922, Lord Reading had selected Crerar to officiate as Secretary of the Home Department at Delhi, and he was confirmed in the appointment in the following year. The post was onerous for at the time the Congress movement was nominated of Mr.Gandhi's cult of non-cooperation and civil disobedience. After a brief acting appointment, Crerar was chosen in 1927 to be Home Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council. Unlike his immediate predecessor, the late Sir Alexander Muddiman, who had gone to the United Provinces as Governor, Crerar was temperamentally grave and reserved, yet his handling of the Opposition in the Legislative and his sincerity in the promotion of the welfare of the sub-continent won him general confidence and esteem. For no less than 12 anxious years, up to his retirement in 1934, he had been in the heavily overworked Home Department. He married, in 1916 Eve[lyn], the third daughter of the late Hon. Charles Brand (b. 1 May 1855 d. 25 Aug 1912) and Alice Emma Sturgis Van de Weyer (d. 4 Feb 1926). She died at the end of 1954, leaving a son and daughter. His address was listed as c/o Nat' l and Grindlay's Bank Ltd., 54 Parliament St., SW1. [from The Times, 31 August 1960, 12c; Who's Who]. They had two children: ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greenwood" <scotquester@bartnet.net> To: <CRERAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 17, 2003 7:11 PM Subject: [CRERAR] Mention - a Dr CRERAR in England > Picked up this Post to the CUMBERLAND-L List - Its a region in England, > not a surname List. Hello! I just found 1881 ALEXANDER CRERAR, blacksmith, 213502 56 Petershill Rd. 727 9.95 10[Glasgow Valu'n Rolls] in David's "Crerar Compendium". Kindest regards from Hamburg, Thomas
While searching for the surname SHEVLIN in the Ellis Island immigrant site, I stumbled across this CRERAR listing : James Dawson PRESTON, 25, single, blacksmith, last resided in Glasgow sailed into New York aboard the "California" departing Glasgow on Dec 9, 1911, arriving NYCity Dec 19, 1911. Destination seems to read Wilmington [in Delaware] but this is hard to read, it is overwritten by initials. The name and address of relative or friend in country of departure was : Br-in-law, Alexander CRERAR residing 56 Petershill Rd, Springburn, Glasgow. I was not only intrigued for the name CRERAR to be found, but know my HALCROW relatives lived at 111 Petershill Rd in the 1901 Census. For James Dawson PRESTON to have a Brother-in-law named CRERAR, his sister, presumably a PRESTON would have married Alexander CRERAR before December, 1911. I have no Alexander CRERAR in my list so far, but someone else might ! Anyone claim this line ? Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma, USA
