India Blair Atholl-India - Australia Crerars: Family 1 I. CHARLES CRERAR (bc 1828 Scotland) = _________ They married around 1847. Charles was apparently head gamekeeper at Blair Atholl, but this is presumably a confusion with John and Charles Crerar, whose offspring are accounted for. A. JAMES CRERAR (bc 1848 Blair Atholl) = Isobel KING (bc 1849 India) James joined the British Army as a schoolteacher. After a posting in India, he met and married Isobel King around 1867 in India. They had four (?) children: 2. EDDY CRERAR (bc 1870 India) 3. HARRY CRERAR (bc 1872 India) 4. STELLA GEORGIANA KING CRERAR (bc 1873 India) = Henry THEOBALD They married 24 Apr 1885 India Bengal Jubbulpore [Christopher Hewson of Australia] Blair Atholl-India - Australia Crerars: Family 2 I. JAMES HENRY CRERAR (bc 1800 Dunkeld) = 1. Elizabeth GRAY (d. before 1830); 2. Jane CLARKE (d.before 1833); 3. Caroline BARCLAY James is reputed to be related to the famous John Crerar of Blair Atholl and his wife Annie Stewart [but no son of that name recorded -- perhaps from another Dunkeld/Blair Atholl family most likely related to John Crerar?]. He was a Sergeant in the Madras European Regiment. He arrived in India in 1819 and reinlisted on 2 March 1829. His ship arrived on Surry (?). It is believed that James married three times. James Henry Crerar married Elizabeth Gray 22 May 1821 at St. Andrews Church, Madras Presidency [N/2/13 f8]. James Henry Crerar (widower) married Jane Clarke (widow) on 4th August 1830 at Masipulatam [now Machillipatnam, N. of Madras, at mouth of Kistna River][N/2/14 f112]. James Henry Crerar (widower) married Caroline Barclay (Widow - Indo-Britain) on 9 April 1833 at Secunderabad [Central-Southern India, N. of Hyderabad]. Apparently James and Caroline had a daughter, Alice (but not confirmed) [likely Alice, below]. James and Caroline had two sons: A. WILLIAM CRERAR (b. 17 January 1835 Nagpur, Bengal; chr. 26 January 1835 - d 30 Mar 1871 Seetabuldee) = Isabella Georgiana KING Ellen Cox's great-great-grandfather . He was baptised at Nagpur, Bengal Presidency [S. of Chhindwara]. They lived in Chhindwara [in Narsinghpur, Central India, SW of Jabalpur]. Isobel was the daughter of Dr. Donald King. William died at Seetabuldee in 1871 of aneurysm of the aorta. They had two daughters: 1. MARY CAROLYN KING CRERAR (b. 10 May 1861; chr.11 December 1861- d. 1863 Kawtah, India) Her father's profession was listed as "Head Clerk". She died at two-and-a-half years old. She is referred to as the daughter of "Mr. W. Crerar" [Times of India Death Notices: 1863 December: http://users.synflux.com.au/~sylcec/dod63.htm]. 2. EDITH MARGARET KING CRERAR (b. 30 October 1862, chr. Chhindwara, Bengal) = John Dalrymple CALLANDER (b. Devon - d Derby 1938) Ellen Cox's great-grandmother. Presidency 22 February 1863. Edith Margaret King Crerar (Eurasian) married John 16 November 1887 at Christ Church Jubbulpore [Jabalpur, N. of Chhindwara]. Her father William Crerar was listed on marriage certificate as dead. An internet posting records that: John Dalrymple Callender was born in Devon and joined the Royal Warwickshire regiment in the 1880s and was posted to Jubbulpore There he met and married Edith King Crerar and they proceeded to have many children in a variety of army locations including Jubbulpore, Mooltan, Colombo, Kandy, Malta and Dublin, finally returning to the UK between 1905 -1910, when his son of the same name as himself married in Lichfield. He appears to have continued to serve in the army getting a medal in 1914 and then moving to the Royal Worcestershire Reserve Battalion. He moved around the country quite a bit and eventually died in Derby in 1938, where he is buried in an unmarked grave. a. John Dalrymple CALLANDER b. (many other children) CALLANDER 3. 1. [CRERAR] James CRERAR son of Gilbert
    2. Hallo fellow CRERAR researchers. I have just joined this List as I am in search of information about my great great great grandfather James Henry Crerar from the Dunkeld area of Perthshire, who joined the Madras European Regiment of the East India Company and went to India on the ship 'Surry' in 1819. Other descendants give his parents as Gilbert Crerar and Barbara Rattray. Slight variations regarding his age on the records I have found in the British Library have cast a slight shadow of doubt in my mind. He was born between 1799 and 1801. Researches on Scotlandspeople show that the James, son of Gilbert and Barbara was from Mickleour and was baptised with his twin brother William on 21.12.1800 in Caputh. However there was another James Crerar son of Donald Crerar and Catharine Anderson baptized in Kenmore 08.06.1799 and also James Crerar son of James Crerar and Elizabeth Anderson baptized in Weem 03.041799. I would like confirm that Gilbert Crerar and Barbara Rattray really are my James's parents. He is said to have had a brother John and a sister Elizabeth. I would also love to know what happened to his siblings and whether there are any descendants. Also anything about the recruitment in Scotland by the East India Company. I look forward to hearing from anyone who might be able to help. Many thanks in anticipation. Pauline in Wiltshire,England
