Hey Everyone I'm new to this list and not entirely sure that I belong here. I'm researching like everyone here. I've been told my ggggrandmother was 1. Cherokee 2. Choctaw 3. Creek *sighs* I have no doubt she was native american based on the characteristics most of my aunts and uncles still carry. Problem is she seemed to be very elusive. I have only found her on one census. She was born in April 1849. We've always been told she was born around Tuscaloosa Alabama. But on the one census I found her on; 1900 Lamar County Alabama, it is showing her being born in Mississippi but with both her parents having been born in Alabama. It is very confusing: Her name is Mary Matilda Lett born April 1849 According to a family journal she has at least three children; Eugene Lett Lucy Jane Lett John O. Lett We are not sure if Lett is a maiden name or married name. That we have found she only married once to a man named John Boover in June or July 1886. But in the 1900 census she is still using the name Lett. John O. Lett, later changed his name to Boover believing his father to have been the William Boover Mary Matilda married. The census shows John O. father to have been from New York rather than from Ireland which is where we have been told the Boover man is from. We also "heard" that the children's father was a man named Eugene Coleman Phillips and may have been a plantation owner. Matilda was said to have been a cook on plantations. None of this has been verified. I know there are many Lett's in Monroe/Escambia/Conecuh counties. I also know there are some Lett's on the Dawes Roll as "freeman". I have yet to make any solid connections. I have also heard from another researcher that disappeared that there was a Sandy Lett that was a "chief" born in escambia county alabama that had a child named Mary Matilda Lett as well as a few other children one of which was a Bertha or Beth Lett. I haven't found any information on this. Well I hope it rings a bell for someone. Thanks Sharon Griffin-Cobb
