Here are some sites about Ira Hayes...I don't think he was forgotten...Obviously he did not want to be honored!!! At least that was the conclusion I came to. Not to say I am not wrong, but, that may have been more than he could deal with..........Winnette http://www.artnatam.com/utaylor/n-ut008.html The Real Ira Hayes, by Urshel Taylor At the conclusion of World War ll he returned to his reservation, disillusioned by what he felt was unwarranted adoration. He began to drink heavily resulting from well-meaning friends offering drink's in their appreciation of his "Heroism" . He was never able to get his life back in balance again. Ira Hayes died of exposure at the age of thirty-three on Jan, 24th 1955. He was memoralized by the Pima people and characterized as "a hero to everyone but himself". He is buried in Arlington Cemetery. He never married. http://www.toptown.com/hp/66/irahayes.htm The Ballad of Ira Hayes Written by Peter LaFarge Recorded by Johnny Cash on 3/5/64 Number 3 - Country Chart http://www.thegoldweb.com/voices/irahayes.htm Ira Hayes Pima Tribe Born -January 12, 1923 Sacaton, Arizona Died - January 24, 1955 Bapchule, Arizona Buried in Arlington National Cemetery ----- Original Message ----- From: "william lechien" <wlechien@hotmail.com> To: <CREEK-SOUTHEAST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2001 9:10 PM Subject: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Native American Holiday I whole-heartedly agree, this holiday is long over due. One can not study the history of the United States (or other American countries) without studying the Native American History. It would be absolutely great if the studies were about the REAL NA's, not just the few well known one's (Cochise, Sitting Bull, Geronimo, etc). It should also be a must that the studies include what the white man did to the NA's. A prime example being IRA HAYES. A NA that, because of his bravery on Iwo Jima during WWII, was awarded the MEDAL OF HONOR, but what happened to him after the war when he was no longer needed. Like many other minorities he was a forgotten man. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ==== CREEK-SOUTHEAST Mailing List ==== Carol Middleton's Legacy Among the Creeks http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmamcrk4/ Heritage of the South http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmddlton/ ============================== Create a FREE family website at MyFamily.com! http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST2
I hope that when the schools start teaching Native American studies they do it historcally, and maybe based on the childrens geographical heritage. For example we do have Indian Education Classes at my daughters Alabama City School and if you are enrolled member of our State tribe you are allowed to attend. One day my daughter came home from school with a project from her indian ed. class she said " look mom, what we made today at indian ed" I looked and to my surprise it was a PAPER TEE PEE !!!!I said thats great ....but I want you to know your grandparents never lived in a tee pee. She said " they didnt??" As if they had told her that they did. I became very involved in these classes from then on and even started teaching them. Also I made sure I went to all the Board of Ed. meetings where studies were being discussed. Then one day she came home and I ask her what she learned today and she replied " well we taught the English people how to take a bath!" The teacher had mistakenly thought the pracice of ' going to water each morning' as we were taking a bath!!Also in her regular Alabama History class they were studying Alabama Indians and they had on a test 'why didnt the indians not eat certain foods like catfish or possum or some other animals" and she was suppose to answer 'because they belong to the "underworld" or some other seemingly mysterious crape. I told my daughter we dont eat ANYTHING that eats SCUM . Another words we dont eat scavengers because they eat things that arent clean . No mystery to it , no religon involved just healthy eating habits. So be careful if your children enter some kind of class where they are teaching NA history. poni
