Author: bunniemccosar Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.special.secreeks/2989.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Creek indian genealogy researcher: Ever since Columbus's time and unto 1840's Creek indians had been taken captive in wars and raids (if they weren't killed). Many villages were destroyed and many went into captivity. Captives were sent as slaves to plantations in the Bahamas,Cuba, and towards S.Carolina and places further north. Many were sent to the New England states as slaves for household work. Most likely many of them were trying to escape slavery and return towards their homeland (difficult for them due to no roads and maps). As slaves, many of them could have met other Creek captives and married and escaped together, some getting lost and then staying in place. Usually they had only one name only and the last name probably came from the family that had them or from someone they knew as a friend (Honoring them).
