    1. Re: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] help finding my family

    3. Hi, Okay. My grandfather was named JD Byrd (that's his real birth name, just initials) on Sept 16, 1910 in Eutah, AL. He had 17 brother's and sisters. I don't know all their names, but some of the names were LC (twin to my grandfather), John, Bertha, James, William, Luther, Clarance, Elizabeth Matey), and Sylvester. My grandfather's mother was Lula McShan. Her husband was Jimmy Byrd, but his father (and LC's father obviously) was Ataway Colvin. Lula was born in 1879 and died in 1959. Ataway was born in 1880 and died in 1972. Lula's father was Jack McShan. Her mother was Henrietta McCracken. I have seen pictures of Lula. She has very strong Native features (hair, cheekbones, forehead), but I couldn't say what tribe. My grandfather also has strong Native features (same as his mom). I am told that Ataway Colvin was at least part Native, but I havent seen any pictures of him. The notion that they were Creek is just family legend. I don't know where that information came from, but it's always been presented as sketchy, so I am not sure about it. I have been told that Jimmy Byrd was a sharecropper and his father was a slave. I don't have any other information. Thanks!
