I'm registered with the "Creek Nation East of the Mississippi" currently headquartered in Oklahoma. Thanks for the name of the tribe Elizabeth English is said to come from. In exchange, I'll give you a few bits of information about researching Nahoga Moniac / Nancy Knight. 1) There are original source documents that show that Nahoga Moniac WAS fathered by William Dixon Moniac, a Dutch fur-trapper, and a Creek maiden named Polly Colbert (her baptismal name, NOT her Indian one). 2) Following the Creek Indian Wars, the Indian territory (GA, FL, AL) was divided up between the evangelical dominations. The Methodists claimed Alabama as their "mission field". As their traveling preachers made converts among the Indian tribes, they baptized the new believers and gave each a new "Christian" name. Some of the Indians went by their new names and some stayed with their original names. 3) No church record has yet been discovered that tells when Nahoga Moniac (documented as a real person) morphed into Nancy Knight (if, in fact, she ever did). Be advised that those roving Methodist preachers were meticulous record-keepers and reports of their work among the various Indian tribes were sent back to their headquarters on a regular basis. That's all the help I can offer you. Good luck in your search for your family origins. Vickey Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
