Do you have any information on Creek Indian decendents with the last name of Batton. My Grandmothers grandfather was a creek indian from South West Georgia, close to a little town called Pelham in Mitchell county which is close to Cairo Georgia where there is a Creek reservation in Whigham. He was adopted by the Godwin family at three months of age after both his parents were found dead we have been told. They named him Alfred Godwin. We were told back in the 1970's that he was a Batton. Any help you can give us would be much appreciated. Pam Barlow, You might try courthouse records in Camilla (Mitchell Co) and/or Newton (Baker Co). They are no more than 20 miles from Pelham and each has records from when they were just one county. The courthouse in Newton was flooded several times and moved up the hill because of floods. Many of the earliest records were destroyed. Still I found records back to the 1850's there for an estate settlement. There is a remote possibility the early Baker County records were copied by WPA and could be in the GA Archives. I don't know if records from Pelham would be in Thomas Co. Courthouse but the records in Thomasville go way back. Thomasville Fine Arts and Genealogical Library has some of the old records and they are very helpful. There are a number of Godwins who live in Thomasville. Google and see what comes up.
